To think that this country is utterly corrupt?

After the Sabinsky scandal, I can't help but think this.

This government was elected on a pack of lies, I think we all know that there will not be 40 new hospitals etc

Even before Boris took over, we had Hancock giving speeches from the HQ of Babylon.

The attacks on the media are nothing short of dictatorial- the gov is going after the BBC and has made threatening noises towards C4.

We were one of the most respected governments- the mother of all parliaments, an old and stable country. Famous for reason and restraint.

What the fuck happened?

@bingbangbing - I find it very hard to believe that you are a historian if you think that Britain is "utterly corrupt".

Alsohuman · 19/02/2020 11:38

Why?

bingbangbing · 19/02/2020 11:44

The quick deal with the US scares me.

We need them more than they need us.

We will loose the NHS eventually. It'll be a slow erosion, but it will happen.

You've clearly never dealt with anything official / government related in India. Now that is one corrupt country OP. Where you have to bribe people (locally known as 'can I get you some tea?' to get even the simplest of things done. I mean simple things like registering your vehicle or applying for a passport.

Spaceprincess · 19/02/2020 12:49

How were they going to staff the 40 imaginary hospitals...

Alsohuman · 19/02/2020 13:22

With imaginary doctors and nurses, silly.

bingbangbing · 19/02/2020 14:03

Shhhhh!

You're Tory bashing - being the poor, oppressed minority that they are, we can't be mean to them...

@brexitsmexit thanks

@sammysmyth couldn’t disagree with you more. As for the comment re Labour and trans women in prison, they may be SAYING that’s ok the tories are the ones in power and actually DOING this! They’re just being very quiet about their stance on this issue, they’re certainly not against it!

I do think we need to find a way to attract people into politics who genuinely want to help others rather than doing it for ego, or money, or power...

Tightening up all the rules around issues which are a conflict of interest would help with that

As would abolishing mps expenses for all but genuine essentials - imo that would mean only public transport costs for mps travelling to London from far enough away it necessitates an overnight stay, commission or commandeer a building just to house visiting mps (we actually used to have this!) and with rooms/facilities for necessary diplomatic meetings with overseas visitors.

They don’t need their food, clothes etc paid for they get a decent salary!

Ordinary folk pay for many things covered by expenses claims out of their own salaries mps should be the same.

Costs for offices, staff etc should be far better regulated and not left solely to the Mp, “employing” family and friends is getting way out of hand!

Alsohumans post at 2312 is spot on and myself and others before your post claiming dissent wasn’t being silenced (ha!) pointed out numerous other ways this is happening.

The Daily Mail isn't funded by the public

No, but it's funded by what? Foreign interests mostly? And yet it's instrumental in shaping opinion here. Is the Daily Mail accountable to the British people? No. And that's the problem.

TheValeyard · 19/02/2020 15:12

You're missing the point. The Daily Mail isn't funded by the public and people potentially don't go to prison for not paying the tax.

Apologies, that wasn't meant to be a BBC/Mail comparison. Rather, I meant that if the accusation is that the left, or the supposed mouthpieces of the left, are anti-British and dedicated to attacking our institutions, there are those who would make a similar accusation of the right.

Friendsafterdating · 19/02/2020 15:16

And what's anti-British to say that a lot of things were not in fact originally British. How is that anti?? Who actually cares?

In any case we are all products of centuries of immigration so what does being British actually mean? How do you define British? Not to mention the fact that in our multi-cultural society the term is extremely broadly defined. Isn't that a good thing?

Mimishimi · 19/02/2020 21:17

The Modern Left, single handedly, has given us identity politics, cultural marxism and anti-patriotism and it is slowly destroying our culture and our civilisation.

And the modern Right gave us the holocaust and forced us to pick identities!!
