To think that this country is utterly corrupt?

After the Sabinsky scandal, I can't help but think this.

This government was elected on a pack of lies, I think we all know that there will not be 40 new hospitals etc

Even before Boris took over, we had Hancock giving speeches from the HQ of Babylon.

The attacks on the media are nothing short of dictatorial- the gov is going after the BBC and has made threatening noises towards C4.

We were one of the most respected governments- the mother of all parliaments, an old and stable country. Famous for reason and restraint.

What the fuck happened?

I thought identity politics came from the right - you have heard of Trump, I take it?

'Government's will always get by on grift to some degree. Our country retains a fairly high standard of rule of law, free speech and public duty, but these shouldn't be taken for granted.'

I think we had all those things but they are under threat.

You couldn't be more wrong I'm afraid. I think you may have it mixed up with something else. Trump?

TheValeyard · 18/02/2020 22:45

I think we had all those things but they are under threat.

They are always under threat, usually from those who claim to be the voice of the people.

SammySmyth · 18/02/2020 22:47

usually from those who claim to be the voice of the people

That's an interesting comment, could you expand on it a bit please?

TheValeyard · 18/02/2020 22:48

The Left used to be anti-big business, anti corporation and now they fall at the feet of the Globalist EU.

Sort of like how the right used to be about fiscal discipline and personal responsibility, but are now into splurging on white elephants and promoting liars and philanderers.

The first bit of your paragraph is correct, the second bit.....I can see why you may think that, but I don't agree with it.

Tellmetruth4 · 18/02/2020 22:54

‘Cultural marxism’ - alt-right bingo! 4chan’s that way Sammy...

TheValeyard · 18/02/2020 22:57

could you expand on it a bit please?

History is filled with 'populists' (they used to be called demagogues) who gain power through claiming to represent the voices of 'real' people (usually the dominant msjority) then use that power to chip away at their restraints. Trump's assault on the Department of Justice or Orban's targeting of minorities are just recent examples.

SammySmyth · 18/02/2020 22:58

alt-right bingo

You're proving my point.

Look at the Self IDing malarky with that Labour politician and prisons. That is the very definition of cultural marxism.

You won't shut me down by calling me Alt Right - it means nothing.

TheValeyard · 18/02/2020 23:00

I don't agree with it.

Each to their own, but the ascent of Trump and Johnson surely turns Western conservativism into nothing but a bad joke.

SammySmyth · 18/02/2020 23:02

Thanks. Does your example also apply to Sein Fein in Ireland who are sweeping to power on the back of a populist vote?

If anything, people are voting for mostly right ring populists because they see the Left trying to erode things they hold dear and the things that bind those people together.

Alsohuman · 18/02/2020 23:03

Nobody wants to shut you down. Silencing disagreement is precisely one of the aspects of the government we currently have that disturbs me.

SammySmyth · 18/02/2020 23:04

Given the alternatives were Clinton or Corbyn people have obviously chosen the lesser of two evils.

If you look at the facts, Trump is doing a good job (at the moment) for his people. The jury is still well and truly out on Johnson.

Mycatwontstopstaring · 18/02/2020 23:04

“What happened”

No-one good went into politics, that’s what happened. Everyone I know either wanted to chase money or chase something ethical. No-one fancied politics or government stuff at all.

So a bunch of power crazed weirdos got the job instead.

You know the Greek word for someone who isn’t interested in politics? “Idiot” Unfortunately we were all idiots.

SammySmyth · 18/02/2020 23:05

Incorrect, 4Truth obviously tried to shut me down.

Alsohuman · 18/02/2020 23:06

No she didn’t.

SammySmyth · 18/02/2020 23:07

Sorry, I don't get you, how is the government silencing disagreement? I genuinely don't understand.

TheValeyard · 18/02/2020 23:08

Oof. They're almost their own thing entirely. Read Jenny McCartney's piece on UnHerd of you want to be really troubled by that one.

they see the Left trying to erode things they hold dear

Would that include the BBC, which many of us hold extremely dear, and which the Conservatives have had their eye on taking down for years?

angell84 · 18/02/2020 23:08

Having a government at all is corrupt.

We give a small number of people - total an utter power to make all decisions for a country.

How do you make people think that they are free?

Let them vote for the person that will have power over them.

Proroguing Parliament? Refusing to do media interviews? A policy of not allowing ministers to appear on the Today programme? Threatening the BBC? Emasculating the courts and removing the right to judicial review? Kicking MPs out of the party?

What are those things if not silencing disagreement?

SammySmyth · 18/02/2020 23:12

I will look out for it.

I think, like you, that I'm politically astute and I don't think for one second they have been trying to take it down for years. Do you have anything I can read to reference your point?

IMO, the BBC is an anti-British, Left wing mouth piece and I haven't watched or used it in over 3 years. Did you see the recent CBBC Horrible histories with Nish Kumar? (I watched it on youtube) A prime example of why it should be a subscription service.

TheValeyard · 18/02/2020 23:12

Given the alternatives were Clinton or Corbyn people have obviously chosen the lesser of two evils.

The point wasn't that they were elected, it was that parties which are supposed to hold true to conservative values chose leaders entirely àntithetical to those values - liars, frauds, philanderers, etc.

Alsohuman · 18/02/2020 23:14

the BBC is an anti-British, Left wing mouth piece and I haven't watched or used it in over 3 years

Then how would you know? The left think the reverse is true which indicates to me it gets it about right.
