To think that this country is utterly corrupt?

bingbangbing · 18/02/2020 11:01

After the Sabinsky scandal, I can't help but think this.

This government was elected on a pack of lies, I think we all know that there will not be 40 new hospitals etc

Even before Boris took over, we had Hancock giving speeches from the HQ of Babylon.

The attacks on the media are nothing short of dictatorial- the gov is going after the BBC and has made threatening noises towards C4.

We were one of the most respected governments- the mother of all parliaments, an old and stable country. Famous for reason and restraint.

What the fuck happened?

Alsohuman · 18/02/2020 20:29

True though. Hopefully more people will wake up faster here.

ssd · 18/02/2020 20:33

I don't think so. I think England is fucked. Sorry. I'm Scottish and can only hope for independence.
I think England has had its day and its going to disappear up its own arse.
An independent Scotland will not be worry free at all, but we need to get away from the sleep walking masses. Sorry.

Bartlet · 18/02/2020 20:34

I know it’s fun for you all to rant about how awful the tories are and hark back to better times but at times it’s worth showing a modicum of objectivity.

tradingeconomics.com/country-list/corruption-rank

We’re joint 12th out of 180 countries. So not we’re not utterly corrupt. Suggest you come out of your UK bubble and spend some time reading how real corruption operates.

ssd · 18/02/2020 20:38

Fun?!?

I don't see anyone laughing?

Alsohuman · 18/02/2020 20:38

It’s not fun, it’s bloody terrifying.

bingbangbing · 18/02/2020 20:41

See where we are on that list in ten years

And it's not fun- everything I loved about my country is being torn up.

The only left will be the countryside and the history- though they may try and destroy or distort that too

OP posts:
Bartlet · 18/02/2020 20:51

There is so much hyperbole on this thread.

I’m not a big fan of this government but I can keep a sense of perspective and realise that we’re actually very lucky to live in such an uncorrupt country. 95% of the countries in the world have it worse.

Friendsafterdating · 18/02/2020 20:58

I think the people accusing others of Tory bashing are missing the point - maybe deliberately.

Do these people feel that the attempts by government to gain more power for themselves at the expense of other institutions, for example, are acceptable?

Is the fact that Andrew Sabirsky resigned rather than being sacked acceptable?

Attacking the use of the word corrupt is just a distraction.

Mimishimi · 18/02/2020 20:59

Actually OP I agree with you and it has been going this way since WW2 with the state organized murder of millions of Europeans. We have not forgotten or forgiven however much they justify it.

Alsohuman · 18/02/2020 21:08

95% of the countries in the world have it worse

Here we go again sigh

brexitsmexit · 18/02/2020 21:12

We have a man who lead the Leave campaign, which was based on lies running our Treasury and the Justice Dept if not all Government Departments.
He's unelected and not held to account in any way so yes the Govt is corrupt!

And meanwhile the Opposition is telling us men are women and women are men and babies are born without a sex!

We're in serious trouble!

GrassyGreen · 18/02/2020 21:22

Unfortunately, as will all organisations, money talks. Those with more money have more power.

Livelovebehappy · 18/02/2020 21:31

Like other posters I’ve lived in a corrupt country and if someone actually really thinks the U.K. is massively corrupt they need to have a reality check and travel a bit more. If people are unhappy with the path the government are going down, place the blame at the feet of opposition parties. They have badly let down a high number of the population of the U.K. with party infighting and very badly run election campaigns. I voted Boris this time but recognise that we need decent opposition to stop a government getting too far up its own arse.

Bartlet · 18/02/2020 21:33

Ok Alsohuman. Continue ranting into your echo chamber about how utterly corrupt it is in this country whilst having no idea what proper endemic corruption is actually like and what it means to people’s every day lives.

brexitsmexit · 18/02/2020 21:39

95% of the countries in the world have it worse

I can't think of many recently who have openly engaged a Contractor us

brexitsmexit · 18/02/2020 21:42

Arrgghh posted too soon!

A contractor who believed in eugenics, and that black people are of lower IQ than white people, paid for with taxpayers money and who applied to a job advert asking for weirdos and misfits!

brexitsmexit · 18/02/2020 21:48

Bingbangbing totally agree with you - all the stuff I've mentioned has been in the past week!
I can't imagine where we will be in a year - never mind 10!

contentedsoul · 18/02/2020 21:53

Oh God, without a doubt!
The "establishment" in this country is quite frankly fucking vile!
I yearn for the day when someone has the balls to put morals and principles first - I'll not hold my breath tho'

Graphista · 18/02/2020 22:07

It’s not utterly corrupt...yet...but it’s very much on the way and fast!

It’s not JUST sabinsky...

It’s...

Bankers being bailed out and allowed to carry on with impunity

It’s the GRA (Tories May be quieter on this but they’re just as ridiculous on their views on the matter)

Housing developers not being held to account for poor quality housing, not providing affordable housing as they’re supposed to

Disability benefits decimated

Universal credit

Emergency services and nhs decimated

Brexit - and ALL the shit that’s stirred up

Decimation of women’s rights

The repeated moves to silence dissent - especially the press with very disturbing actions on that front.

Massive underfunding of the armed forces

Decimation of legal aid

Insidious destruction of the judicial system

It’s funding warmongering nations that increases the instability in the world rather than implementing policies and actions that are peaceful, healing and supportive of those suffering.

@everanewbie - how do you think they’re getting away with doing all of the above? With getting policies passed that only serve the wealthy? It’s certainly not JUST by making good arguments and persuading people!

I have a particular issue with mps having vested interests in businesses and industries that mean they vote against their constituents interests. I’m especially thinking of the large number of mps who are landlords and even property developers and then you look at their voting records and they almost ALWAYS vote against tenants rights, tightening up housing regulations etc

It’s a conflict of interest, which is a corrupt setup and shouldn’t be allowed!

As for the comments about Germany I’ve lived there and still have friends living there (brits, Germans and other nationalities) and they certainly DO address both ww and how fascism was able to rise as it did. Other European countries (where I also have friends/family) who were big colonisers also discuss and acknowledge the effects of that and acknowledge their poor behaviour there. So I don’t know where people are getting the idea that doesn’t happen?

Bribery is NOT the only example/evidence of corruption! People benefitting unscrupulously from unfair policies and by working the system is ALSO corrupt, huge issues with tax avoidance and evasion in this country, lack of enforcement of health and safety and housing and many other regulations.

Just how bad does it have to get before people will even acknowledge things aren’t as they should be and for many years were?

“When Northern Ireland and Scotland go, it'll be complete.

They will go.” As a Scot who voted no to independence before I agree, there’s much more support for independence here now.

Alsohuman · 18/02/2020 22:07

Ok Alsohuman. Continue ranting into your echo chamber

Why pick me out? I’m not ranting and I’m not alone. Nor am I complacently sleepwalking through the worst I’ve seen this country undergo in my almost seven decades. If you want to whistle a happy tune and pretend everything’s fine, you crack on, just don’t expect everyone else to join you.

brexitsmexit · 18/02/2020 22:23

Graphista I completely agree with every word of your post!

It's all speeding up now, the Govt has a huge majority, we're out of the EU so that level of protection is gone, the Govt is planning on scrapping the BBC which while I think it's biased it's the best we've got!

SammySmyth · 18/02/2020 22:30

I mean, who would have thought that globalism and the freedom of movement (cheap labour) would have seen a country go into decline.......

ALL of Europe is declining and it's the fault of the globalists (EU and Left Wing)

Mimishimi · 18/02/2020 22:32

How is it the fault of the Left?

TheValeyard · 18/02/2020 22:35

Government's will always get by on grift to some degree. Our country retains a fairly high standard of rule of law, free speech and public duty, but these shouldn't be taken for granted.

To an extent, though, you get the government you deserve, and I am more and more seeing the country becoming a small, petty place - attitudes towards immigration, public service, the primacy of free markets above all else, the lack of value placed on anything beyond it's pound value. All very depressing, all driven by the attitudes of 'normal' people and all ripe for exploitation by the unscrupulous.

SammySmyth · 18/02/2020 22:38

How is it the fault of the Left

The Modern Left, single handedly, has given us identity politics, cultural marxism and anti-patriotism and it is slowly destroying our culture and our civilisation.

The modern left don't care about the working class people of this country, they care about virtue signalling and attempting to re-write history.

The Left used to be anti-big business, anti corporation and now they fall at the feet of the Globalist EU.
