By force? Jesus!

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 23:49

Well done Italy. I hope we see such measures if the virus spreads over here.

TartanTexan · 22/02/2020 23:51

What do ‘they’ know that we don’t, yet?

PinkGinAndTacos · 22/02/2020 23:51

This is unprecedented......I've never known anything like this in my lifetime. How can people be so naive to think it's no worse than flu? This is really serious. They don't lock down cities for nothing!

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 23:55

Definitely seeing less of the "it's just flu" posts/comments as the situation gradually gets worse.

FelicityFebruary · 22/02/2020 23:55

The information so far accessible to all is worrying enough. There doesn't need anything more , unless I am missing something?

Quartz2208 · 22/02/2020 23:59

It’s unprecedented because we have been lucky not to have a pandemic in our lifetime and international travel means

The Spanish Flu pandemic was historically viewed as failing at applying a consistent level of it which is why it has spread.

Sadly the other reason it is unprecedented is that in previous outbreaks it was viewed as far more common to die of illnesses/diseases than it is now

Modern living plays a huge part in this I think

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 23:59

From the BBC correspondent for Seoul on twitter : The UK Foreign office is advising against all but essential travel to Daegu and Cheongdo due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. The government of South Korea has designated Deagu and Cheongdo cities as “special care zones” following a growing number of cases of coronavirus.

FloatingCloudz · 23/02/2020 00:00

Re. the request for suspected coronavirus patients to call 111. What if you have symptoms (fever, cough, fatigue, etc) but to your knowledge you haven’t been in contact with anyone who’s been to China? Will people just assume it’s a normal bug and carry on as usual?

LarkDescending · 23/02/2020 00:04

After today the Italians must suspect that their iceberg is far bigger than anyone had thought.

They have had 58 new cases in a single day.

They have 18 seriously ill or critical (even South Korea only has 9, out of 443 cases).

They have learned that their presumed “Patient Zero” was a red herring, so it is back to the drawing board on contact tracing.

No doubt there is also deep concern about just how close Codogno (the epicentre of the outbreak) is to Milan.

ofwarren · 23/02/2020 00:08

Yes @FloatingCloudz the department of health confirmed that 111 has two different scripts. One for people who have travelled to China etc and one for people who haven't.

zen1 · 23/02/2020 01:03

I think it’s rather concerning that the number of serious / critical patients seems to be slowly rising. It’s now at 22%.

Did we need another clusterfuck from Japan?

Rough translation:

Ministry of Health, Labour and Wlefare stated that doctors and nurses who checked passengers on the Diamond Princess were not screened for Covid-19 and will not be screened unless they show symptoms

Their reasoning? Doctors and nurses know how to handle infection control so they won’t be a risk. This is despite one nurse from the ship and one government official being diagnosed with Covid-19, and with evidence that infection control on the ship was not being dealt with correctly.

So a number of doctors and nurses were potentially exposed, then were sent back to work as normal. The ministry is now rethinking whether they do in fact need to test them.

FloatingCloudz · 23/02/2020 01:39

What are you supposed to do if you feel ill then? I feel dreadful but DH won’t let me call 111 because he says I’m paranoid and haven’t even been near anyone who’s at risk.

PumpkinPieAlibi · 23/02/2020 01:53

2 new deaths and 120 new cases in South Korea.

The SK cluster and outbreak is astounding.

HeIenaDove · 23/02/2020 02:03

I have relatives in Italy but in the south.

captainamericassexybeard · 23/02/2020 05:10

With an enforced quarantine I wonder what happens if you work in another town/city and your home goes into lockdown during the day while you’re at work.
Would you be allowed back in? What if you had nowhere else to go?
There are so many things to consider.

I wasn’t overly worried. I am now. Can’t believe it’s not even the top story on a lot of online publications and that worries me more because I think the line is not to create panic here.

It’s inevitable now surely - just hope that it does fizzle out and the numbers aren’t as bad as predicted.

Incidentally I am curious as to how flu spreads (speed rate). If there was a situation like Diamond Princess with flu, would the spread be comparable
Or is COVID way more infectious (I’m presuming the latter)

KoalasandRabbit · 23/02/2020 05:19

I saw in Wuhan there were lots of pets home alone with no food or water as owners unable to get back due to lockdown. Sad Few lovely people who are going round feeding as many as they can but even then it's sometimes they leave a month's food. My cat would try to eat that in a day.

HasaDigaEebowai · 23/02/2020 05:19

Incidentally I am curious as to how flu spreads (speed rate)

Seasonal flu has a replication rate of about 1.3. Everyone with the virus infects 1.3 other people on average

Estimates are currently that this has a replication rate of around 3 and so its much worse.

Plus this has a much, much higher serious/critical/death rate than flu.

captainamericassexybeard · 23/02/2020 05:23

Thanks @HasaDigaEebowai

littlemissmuffins · 23/02/2020 05:35

Yes I agree it seems the Italians aren't fucking about with this, and I too hope our government would/will do the same.

user34254356 · 23/02/2020 05:50

@FloatingCloudz same here, awful dry cough and aches for 4 days. I am going to call 111 today. DH also thinks I am being paranoid.

HasaDigaEebowai · 23/02/2020 05:59

Tbh we need people to start thinking that their coughs and temperatures might be cv. It clearly isn’t only related to visiting China

amd4578 · 23/02/2020 06:00

@justchecking1 not at all, My figures stated that even in Hubei if they had 10 times as many cases as they do now it would still only be 1% of the population of this small town that would be affected and then 15% of that 1% would be critical in hospital
