@ofwarren I hadn't had the flu vaccine when I had that bout of flu that led to pneumonia last year (April), that was a big mistake. I did have the vaccine in October when it was on offer. Hopefully it will give me some protection, though I'm currently suffering from another virus at the moment, with a temperature.

I'm trying not to worry, but I'm sure there are a lot of people like us who know that we would be at risk if there were to be an outbreak of coronavirus in this country (which is clearly not an unlikely scenario).

Mittens030869 · 22/02/2020 21:20

@KoalasandRabbit Yes, that's true. But that's because coronavirus is, by definition, a virus. It's a kind of viral pneumonia. The pneumonia vaccine that's available is against regular pneumonia, which is a bacterial infection that can be treated by antibiotics.

GoldenMarigolds · 22/02/2020 21:21

If anyone is interested there is a live Q&A with Dr John Campbell on his you tube channel now about this

Just type his name in search.

I'm heading back to watch more

Shopgirl1 · 22/02/2020 21:21

The flu vaccine won’t give you any protection, Coronavirus is not a strain of influenza virus.
Really all getting very worrying now.

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2020 21:23

Consensus shifting from the idea it can be contained to one which thinks we are looking at pandemic.

milano.corriere.it/notizie/cronaca/20_febbraio_22/coronavirus-milano-sala-uffici-servizi-pubblici-aperti-ma-ridurre-socialita-65852eca-5599-11ea-8418-2150c9ca483e.shtml

Part translation via Google translate

The first two positive cases in Milan are added to the list of contagions of Coronavirus (Covid-19) in Italy. It is a resident of Sesto San Giovanni hospitalized in the San Raffaele hospital for a week.

And an inhabitant of Mediglia, south of the capital, who was hospitalized in the Melegnano hospital and who would now have been transferred to Sacco. The emergency measures to be taken in the Lombard capital are being studied.

Now all the contacts that the two patients in the days of hospitalization at San Raffaele (the first) and in Melegnano (the second) must be reconstructed, including doctors, nurses and other patients.

And

On Sunday, moreover, "there will be a meeting in the morning on public hygiene" because Milan is a "big city" where the complications could be "important but also the resources" are equally huge. In the meantime, the Sacco hospital in Milan has blocked the acceptance of new patients, but selectively, to make the best available beds available. The plan envisaged when managing a high flow of patients to the hospital is being implemented, as learned from qualified sources.

So one of the two cases identified today in Milan had been in hospital a full week. And it looks like there is a serious risk of the hospital now being an infection hot spot, so it's more or less been shut down for now.

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2020 21:32

And another translated article

www.informazione.it/a/E17D989B-3D94-418A-B240-531375721CC4/Coronavirus-450-persone-rinchiuse-a-Schiavonia-Cosa-succede-nell-ospedale-blindato-Siamo-stanchi-affamati-e-preoccupati
Coronavirus, 450 people imprisoned in Schiavonia. What happens in the armored hospital: «We are tired, hungry and worried»

Schiavonia hospital has a total of 300 beds and 600 employees.

The outburst comes from an instrumental nurse from the hospital of Schiavonia (Padua), held in the operating block since yesterday afternoon with 14 other colleagues for the coronavirus emergency.

And

One of the armored people inside the Paduan structure, where everyone, patients and staff working in the structure, was subjected to the Coronavirus test, shows the situation. In fact, the first two patients infected by Covid-19 in the Veneto passed through this hospital , one of whom died on 21 February. (Leggo.it)

And

About 600 people are expected to be tested in the hospital. - PADUA , FEBRUARY 22 - There would be some positive tests among the swabs already carried out inside the hospital of Schiavonia (Padua), where Adriano Trevisan, the first Italian victim of the virus , died . (Tiscali.it)

The man had already been hospitalized for about ten days for various and previous pathologies, died on the evening of Friday 21 February at the hospital of Schiavonia (Padua) in the municipality of Monselice .. To date there are 17 cases ascertained in Italy , two in Veneto and 15 in Lombardy (RovigoOggi.it)

So two people who died both were at this hospital and they are worried that staff might be infected so they are keeping them there until they've been tested.

It looks like the man who died had been in hospital for other things before he got infected and they suspect he may have been infected with coronavirus in the hospital.

So that makes two hospitals that they are concerned about and worried about cross infections (which is what happened in China)

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2020 21:33

It's enormously frustrating that no English language reporting seems to be picking up on this.

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2020 21:44

Milan universities suspending teaching next week.

CaffiSaliMali · 22/02/2020 22:01

Agree that the lack of reporting in the UK is worrying. I've been following these threads from the start, very grateful to all the posters who have shared info here.

WaterSheep · 22/02/2020 22:09

BBC news at 10 mentioned those who have returned to the UK from the Diamond Princess, and the cases in South Korea. However, nothing abut Italy.

buttermilkwaffles · 22/02/2020 22:10

"Although travel restrictions from Wuhan City and other cities across China may have reduced the absolute number of travellers to and from China, we estimated that about two thirds of COVID-19 cases exported from mainland China have remained undetected worldwide, potentially resulting in multiple chains of as yet undetected human-to-human transmission outside mainland China."

(Excerpt from summary, full report can be read at link above).

KoalasandRabbit · 22/02/2020 22:17

I'm finding the BBC slow with reporting, I'm following on CNN which seems to be much faster - this is todays:

edition.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-02-22-20-intl-hnk/index.html

Plus this map is quite good for numbers.

Been following David Abel's updates, obviously currently his son now Stephen Abel as he's too ill, been really interesting insight and rather depressing to see how poor UK help was.

Delatron · 22/02/2020 22:19

I think it’s bad reporting. This is a major event in Italy with entire towns on lockdown. Why aren’t they reporting it?

Weezy511 · 22/02/2020 22:26

It is bizarre how it's not being picked up by the media, unless they've been instructed to not cause alarm perhaps.

GoldenMarigolds · 22/02/2020 22:27

Lack of information causes theories, speculation and often panic.

But there are other things to be considered in a global economy, like travel, airlines, hotels, hospitality, Trade, and so on.

Don't frighten the horses now seems to the mantra. But it won't work long term. The virus is out now.

LittleSwede · 22/02/2020 22:28

Swedish news had the situation in Italy as it's top news story for most of today, until it was moved down the webpage due to Eurovision qualifier drama (because that's more important!) and sand storms on Grand Canaria Hmm

IvyBush123 · 22/02/2020 22:29

Breaking news in Germany: Italy wants to lock down cities - not towns but cities. Wonder if it is Milano.

www.n-tv.de/newsletter/breakingnews/Italien-will-von-Coronavirus-betroffene-Staedte-abriegeln-article21595210.html

FelicityFebruary · 22/02/2020 22:32

My DP thinks as I have been telling him about italy cases and response that it must be internet rumour.

Eek!

WhoWants2Know · 22/02/2020 22:35

AFP are now reporting 79 cases in Italy. Isn't that more than double in a day?

IvyBush123 · 22/02/2020 22:42

@FelicityFebruary Show him our sources then.

IvyBush123 · 22/02/2020 22:50

The article I just linked to has been updated and has more info now. I think Milano is not on lock down.

FelicityFebruary · 22/02/2020 23:08

Well I had a look through a few UK news stories online and picked one from the Sun which detailed over 40 local football matches called off / in doubt in northern Italy. That hit home!

Lillyhatesjaz · 22/02/2020 23:14

The channel 4 news mentioned both Italy and Iran.

KoalasandRabbit · 22/02/2020 23:23

Swedish press say 79 in Italy and lockdown will be by force if needed.
timesofsweden.com/2020/02/22/italy-coronavirus-update-live/

AvocadoOwl · 22/02/2020 23:44

Wow, the Italians aren't fucking about if they are sending the army in to ensure no one can enter/leave quarantined areas. By force if necessary and people attempting to leave face criminal charges.

I hope our government are as decisive when the time comes.
