Yes it is wherearemychickens its starting to escalate

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2020 18:19

Case in Milan. Up to 62 in Italy now.

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/02/2020 18:20

WTF is going on with the BBC though? Nothing about Italy whatsoever in the headlines on the website. South korea get a mention and the DP passengers but you'd think nothing had happened in Italy. Its ok though because there's a headline about a Friends reuniting episode Hmm

This makes me really worry about what we are told.

MissPoldark · 22/02/2020 18:20

Italy are reporting 16 serious cases, which is more than Japan & South Korea combined. Doesn’t this seem odd?
Does it mean there must be many more undetected mild cases in Italy?

MissPoldark · 22/02/2020 18:21

They’ve been talking about it on radio 4.

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/02/2020 18:23

Unfortunately radio 4 is not where the masses get their news (although the country would be better off if they did)

IvyBush123 · 22/02/2020 18:23

@wherearemychickens What did John Campbell say?

Jenasaurus · 22/02/2020 18:32

here it is Ivy

wherearemychickens · 22/02/2020 18:33

Basically that it does seem to have shifted up a gear now, and we are looking at the early stages of a global pandemic, and also some things that he's heard from people he knows in Iran that sounded worrying - doctors there being worried by seeing a rapid deterioration in some people.

Jenasaurus · 22/02/2020 18:35

Also its the lack of information from some countries like North Korea that state they have no cases at all.

yolofish · 22/02/2020 18:40

Yes, I am going to insist that DD1 sees a doctor tomorrow (have vague recollection that french doctors will pitch out to see anyone, anytime, as long as you can pay). Whether she will of course, I don't know, given that she is 23. But really her company ought to be listening.

WaterSheep · 22/02/2020 18:41

I'm all for avoiding panic and dramatic headlines, but the absence of any reporting at all is weird.

The most cases / deaths in Europe, 10 towns, 50,000 people, placed in precautionary voluntary quarantine, schools, workplaces, municipal and private offices, 3 train stations, coffee shops, and public places closed.

Yet there's absolutely no mention of any of this. Confused

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 22/02/2020 18:41

It's add, they also restricted flights from China early on, unless I remember wrongly.

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/02/2020 18:43

If she's in a ski resort yolo its generally pretty easy to get in to see a doctor if you can pay. We've always found they have lots around in resort due to the number of ski injuries they have.

TreesSandSea · 22/02/2020 18:43

Do more people from Wuhan go to Italy than come here to the UK? Seem surprising that London isn’t ramping up to the same extent.

The NHS is at the point of collapse as it is.

yolofish · 22/02/2020 18:46

thanks hasa her place is slightly out of town, so she would have to get on a bus to see anyone. I mean, I dont think she actually has corona, but she potentially could and that is worrying everyway you look at it.
Also, all the other girls in her flat have had/are having the same thing, but not so badly.

GorkyMcPorky · 22/02/2020 18:48

I think the lack of media coverage is patronising in part but also concerning given how determinedly we tell ourselves that they love to exaggerate.

TreesSandSea · 22/02/2020 18:53

Iran and Italy don’t feature at all

The Virus Is Interrupting Supply Chains From Watches to Lobsters
Chaos reigns from the high seas to the factory floor after key manufacturers in China shut down or ships are held in port.

Good read on the economic impact

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2020 18:58

The lack of reports of cases in Indonesia, the Philippines, Pakistan and North Korea are the ones you want to be worried about.

High flight traffic / shared borders / close trade links are where there are most likely to be cases.

None of these countries are reporting what you'd expect from what's happening elsewhere.

Jenasaurus · 22/02/2020 19:03

its on this list, but number 21

runninguphills · 22/02/2020 19:04

It's getting serious today, it's clear that the virus has reached across the globe and it will continue to escalate in different areas as it has in Iran and Italy.

I completely agree with Dr John Campbell. We already struggle with winter flu - we do not have the resources to deal with a pandemic. A huge number of ITU beds will be required.

MissPoldark · 22/02/2020 19:07

Even in today’s print Guardian, there’s no mention of CV until page 20 Confused

Quartz2208 · 22/02/2020 19:13

I guess at the moment though the situation in the UK hasnt changed and they want to shy away from causing too much panic.

And for those who want to find the information it is out there. My surgery sent out a text, local schools have posters up etc

runninguphills · 22/02/2020 19:13

I know - why no coverage? Italy have declaired a state of emergency and locked down 10 towns. They aren't that far away from us.
