very informative update on how its spread

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 22/02/2020 12:29

Grinchly I may be mistaken, but it’s my understanding that the Abels were offered a transfer to a hostel (not hospital) for isolation, before they tested positive. They refused this as staying on the ship meant they could access wifi and stay in touch with their family and be in familiar surroundings. And as far as they knew, they were testing negative for the virus. As soon as they were tested positive, they were moved to the hospital.
The communication sounds pretty bad on the ship so I can completely understand how they’d be even more worried to be in a hostel, with no wifi ) no communication with the outside world.

People who are stocking up, are you in the UK?

I've not waded through these threads just dipping in and out.

I'm sure it's been mentioned but the Italian in intensive Care is 38?

lemonjumper · 22/02/2020 12:48

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but I saw this on the Guardian about an incubation period as long as 27 days:

"A 70-year-old man in China’s Hubei province was infected with coronavirus but did not show symptoms until 27 days later, the local government said on Saturday, suggesting the virus’s incubation period could be much longer than the presumed 14 days."

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/02/2020 12:49

We are stocked up in the UK (although I was already well stocked in case of a brexit crash out). The speed with which things have happened in Italy shows that its worth while having enough food/meds in to last a couple of weeks just in case an area goes into lockdown.

WaterSheep · 22/02/2020 12:50

I'm sure it's been mentioned but the Italian in intensive Care is 38?

Yes just 38. There's no mention if he has any previous medical conditions, but his parents have updated about his current condition and it sounds awful. Sad

The 38-year-old man is in critical condition, mechanically ventilated in intensive care, according to his parents

Quartz2208 · 22/02/2020 12:54

the link watersheep posted also says it normally takes 7 days for the symptoms to become serious/critical.

This means that in Italy the scary thing is not that the 30 cases has a 50% serious rate it that it is probably still in line with the 20% which means there are a lot of mild cases spreading it around

I don't know if this is a stupid question, but since he's in Hubei, how can they know he got it from the person he was in contact with (27 days before he tested positive), and not someone else, at a later date? I'm assuming it's so widespread now they can't trace every case back to who infected them - maybe that's incorrect of me?

BambooBoobam · 22/02/2020 13:01

Thanks Water

Mittens030869 · 22/02/2020 13:01

My friends from Africa, aren't worried about flu, but this terrifies them for their family. They are all vulnerable because many people have been weakened by the diseases they get over there, TB, Hepatitis and HIV, to name a few.

Not to mention malaria, which kills millions every year, and which they can't protect themselves from, apart from with prophylactics, which are not advisable long-term. You can't stop mosquitoes from biting.

Where coronavirus is concerned, with the lack of hygiene that's prevalent there, the disease will spread like wildfire. It's what happened with AIDS in the past; when I was working on a project in Uganda in 1994, I was told that there were whole villages where there was no one alive who was older than 15.

I'm also worried about my DM, who is working in West Africa at 80 years old. I'm glad she's coming back soon.

Snowdropsdelight · 22/02/2020 13:02

What sort of things can people stock up with?

Cans of food, loo roll?
Paracetamol I guess?
Pasta?

Snowdropsdelight · 22/02/2020 13:03

Also what medication are people given if its a virus?

lemonjumper · 22/02/2020 13:04

I don't know for sure, but he has maybe been quarantined/isolated since then for whatever reason?

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/02/2020 13:09

What sort of things can people stock up with?

Just buy food etc (and anything else that is essential for you) that would last you a couple of weeks if you can't leave the house. Worth visiting the preppers topic here on MN if you need ideas.

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/02/2020 13:47

Well if the BBC photos are the buses transporting the Diamond princess passengers, neither the driver nor the guy sat next to him on the front coach have masks on. Fuckwits. How on earth do they hope to contain this if people do that sort of thing?

Choux · 22/02/2020 14:03

@hasa there are only 32 passengers but three buses. One can only hope the first bus is medical crew and equipment that has not yet come into contact with the passengers so no masks currently needed. Otherwise it is extremely foolish as it is likely at least one passenger is incubating the virus.

BambooBoobam · 22/02/2020 14:09

I can’t believe they’ve not got protective gear on. It’s been confirmed as airborne.

WaterSheep · 22/02/2020 14:23

New update for Iran

Total Cases - 28
New cases today - 10
Total Deaths - 9
New Deaths today - 5

Nope nothing odd about those figures, nothing at all. Hmm

Almost All Patients in South Korean Psychiatric Ward Have Virus

Almost all patients at a psychiatric ward of a South Korean hospital tested positive for the coronavirus, with local reports saying a religious sect with followers who were infected had attended a funeral in the same complex.

South Korea’s two confirmed deaths from the virus were also from the Cheongdo hospital’s mental health division, Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Saturday. Both patients had been moved out of the psychiatric ward for medical treatment before their deaths, Vice Health and Welfare Minister Kim Kang-lip said at a briefing.

Two new cases in UAE. One of them is a visitor from Iran.

Jenasaurus · 22/02/2020 15:13

TheElementsOdeToJoy Thanks for sharing that link, that really paints a picture showing comparrisons to other illnesses. Really interesting.

I'm actually really worried now. DD1 is working in a ski resort of the French/Swiss border of the Alps, about 30 miles from the first British case. She has a terrible cough, cannot sleep, upset stomach. Doesnt know if she has a fever as no thermometer. They won't let her off work (working in hotels/chalets, sometimes handling food), she's been ill for a few days. I've told her that if she feels any worse she's got to get the management to get her a doctor, and I'll pay.
