Look at the numbers of people dying from the flu every year and their ages. Corona virus is a long way away from posing a threat to most of our lives.

South Korea has reported 346 positive patients a few hours ago.

@LoadsaBlusher Without trying to sound condescending that is a really bad example there. Hubei has a population of 58.5 million. Lets just say they get 10 times as many cases as they have now so around 630000 that is just over 1% of the population there. 15% of them are critical so around 90000 so that is about 0.015% of the population of Hubei need critical care.

If we take those figures and apply them to the market town with 100000 people so 1% get infected and 15% of them need critical care. that is only 150 people from that town. still bad i know but much more manageable.

What people need to realize from these figures is how densely populated china is. i mean Hubei province has a population the same size as England itself even Wuhan itself [which lets be honest not many of us had heard of until this came about] has a bigger population than London. These places are so densely populated and it would be silly to try and compare the spread of the virus over there to the potential spread of it over here.

The media love a scare story. its how they sell papers and get website views. Now even they have not even reported it as much as the early days. I am in no way saying we should not be aware and keep up to date with it. but also we need to realise that and figures published of potential deaths to the world etc will have been created by a model using the absolute worst case scenario.

I have gone off on a tangent but in answer to the thread title i would say that rather than being worried we should just be aware and follow the guidelines that the government have set out. Also even if the WHO do declare a pandemic, nothing changes for us as it stands so please dont get even more worried.

An 78yo Italian man has died.

Twitter says a child has died from the virus in Damaskus: twitter.com/EagleSyrian1/status/1230963395387645954

Does anyone know if this is true?

LoadsaBlusher · 22/02/2020 07:14

Thanks @amd4578

I don’t take your reply in a condescending way at all . I think it’s good to be reassured / re-explained with figures like that.

Given that they initially denied they had any cases of Coronavirus, the outcome of this will be interesting.

An Iranian official has tested positive for coronavirus, state TV reported on Saturday. Morteza Rahmanzadeh, the mayor of district 13 of the capital Tehran, was hospitalized with coronavirus symptoms on Friday, according to state TV.

But the Fars news agency later tweeted the director of public relations for district 13 had denied Rahmanzadeh had contracted the virus, saying he was in good health.

Twitter says a child has died from the virus in Damaskus

It's not verifiable given the situation in the country.

Officially Syria put out a statement yesterday saying there were no cases.

sana.sy/en/?p=186221
Health Ministry: There are no Coronavirus cases in Syria

But this is Syria and as we've seen from China and Iran already, there are governments quite happy to lie through their teeth about the virus.

In Northern Italy 50,000 people have been put into lock down according to local media.

Bno newsroom @bnonews
For those 10 towns (50,000 people):
- Residents are asked to stay at home for 1 week

  • All public events are suspended^
- No work and commercial activities - No recreational activities - All schools are closed - Public transport won't stop in those areas

Will be interesting to see how well its observed and enforced...

Italy towns under lockdown as first European coronavirus death reported

An Italian man became the first European to die after being infected with the coronavirus Friday, just hours after 10 towns in the country were locked down following a flurry of new cases.

The 78-year old from the Veneto region who had tested positive for the virus died in hospital, where he had been admitted 10 days earlier for an unrelated health issue, Italy's health minister said.

Adriano Trevisan was a retired bricklayer and one of two people with the disease in the region, while 15 other people were discovered to have caught the virus in Lombardy, which took immediate measures to isolate affected areas.

And

A 67-year old from the same village as Trevisan has also tested positive.

Veneto region head Luca Zaia said earlier Friday "a sanitary ring" would be created around Vo' Euganeo, and all 3,300 inhabitants would be tested.

And

Five doctors and 10 other people tested positive for the virus in neighbouring Lombardy, after apparently frequenting the same bar and group of friends, authorities said at a press conference.

Ministry officials not tested after being on ship

NHK has learned that a large number of health ministry officials who boarded the cruise ship quarantined near Tokyo were allowed to return to their workplace without being tested for the new coronavirus.

As of Friday, 634 passengers and crewmembers on the Diamond Princess had tested positive.

Four government officials who worked on the ship have been infected.

At least 90 health ministry officials have boarded the ship. Ministry sources told NHK that many who showed no symptoms were not tested before returning to their workplace.

Professor Mitsuo Kaku, an expert on infectious diseases at Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University, is calling for a review of how ministry officials are tested. He points to the fact that some have been infected.

If anyone thinks this can now be contained, they are off their head.

I don't know what WHO are playing at saying 'Narrowing window' to contain outbreak.

Are they actually competent? Or just delusional?

LarkDescending · 22/02/2020 09:12

The BBC is reporting that David and Sally Abel (ex Diamond Princess) now have pneumonia, with David the more seriously ill of the two. Source: their son.

peridito · 22/02/2020 09:16

Oh no .Have been wondering how they were doing .

NaturalBornWoman · 22/02/2020 09:16

Are they actually competent? Or just delusional?

Have they actually declared a pandemic yet? They do seem somewhat on the back foot.

But then I think that realistically the only way we ever had of stopping it was to put extreme measures in place before they seemed essential, and you could see from the various threads on here that people were simply not prepared to take it seriously enough to put up with that.

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2020 09:19

The Abel's story is utterly appalling and dreadful to see playing out.

Unfortunately for all the talk of their son, there isn't a cat in hells chance of them being flown back to the UK especially if his father's condition is as bad as suggested. I sincerely hope they both have a speedy recovery.

How many cases have they had?

WaterSheep · 22/02/2020 09:20

1 new death and 10 new cases in Iran.

Happy to be corrected but I believe 5 deaths is the highest outside of China.

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2020 09:24

Have they actually declared a pandemic yet?

Nope. And it's very difficult to argue we haven't reached the criteria for it.

I thought we'd get it by the end of this weekend at the very latest, but I am starting to doubt that now.

The last fortnight has been half term in the UK, so there will be lots of people travelling. I can well imagine in the next ten days we'll see a new British cluster pop up.

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2020 09:25

Just seeing rumours that a second person has died in Italy. Will try and find source.

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2020 09:32

I believe the number of Italian cases is 25 in Lombardy and 3 in veneto.

Second death seems to be in the Lombardy cluster. First was in the Veneto cluster.

Just read this on Reuters FB:

A coronavirus patient initially discharged after recovering in southwestern Sichuan province's Chengdu city has been readmitted after testing positive during a quarantine period at home, the city's public health clinical center said on Friday.
