Have you not seen the Daily Mail KILLER VIRUS headlines? There are at least 6 sensationalist headlines today. There's been loads of mainstream coverage but, you know, floods and Caroline Flack and Priti Patel and terrorist plots.... What would be the point of people panicking? There is no reason to panic in this country at the moment anyway, but even if there were, what good would it serve?

Ontopofthesunset · 21/02/2020 17:47

Indeed the WHO announcement about the window for containment shrinking is the BBC main headline now.

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 17:50

I haven't seen those headlines. Other than the over reporting when the UK cases were first confirmed, and the recent reports about those on the cruise ship I haven't seen any over the top reporting. Which was the point of my post.

I've seen plenty of media reports about the virus, but in my opinion the way they're reporting about it feels different. Like others have said, it feels more sensible and less sensational. Of course causing panic doesn't help people, but we know that dramatic reporting grabs the public's attention.

Cotonshaded · 21/02/2020 17:50

Does anyone know what happened re the potential outbreak in a ski chalet near Chamonix that was in the news a couple of weeks ago? I don't think I've seen anything in the news about that recently - did they all test negative?

Ontopofthesunset · 21/02/2020 17:52

Apart from the old-fashioned 'red tops' most of the news outlets are being very balanced, I agree.

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 17:52

Cross posted there. By those headlines I was referring to the daily mail ones, not the BBC.

justchecking1 · 21/02/2020 17:54

I think we're all screwed if it gets into Syria.

I can't think of a better act of terrorism than to send half a dozen infected people off to mingle with the locals in the world's capitals.

They won't even try to contain it, they'll deliberately spread it.

LoadsaBlusher · 21/02/2020 17:58

16 cases reported in Italy now

Jenasaurus · 21/02/2020 18:37

19 cases in Italy now, its shot right up in one day, quite a few serious too.

Jenasaurus · 21/02/2020 18:38

bnonews.com/index.php/2020/02/the-latest-coronavirus-cases/

This is a good link to all the sources and latest cases

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 18:39

10 new cases in Italy. New cases include: 5 health workers and 3 patients in the Codogno Hospital.

News about the hospital doesn't sound good, I expect there will be more cases to come.

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 19:39

1 new cases in the United States. The individual had returned from China on Feb. 2nd and has so far shown no symptoms.

Very worrying.

Plantpotpot · 21/02/2020 19:49

But of all the infections from the cruise ship - over 600 - there have only been 2 deaths. Those 2 were over 80 and apparently had already been treated for respiratory issues (in hospital) before. Obviously that’s terrible in itself (I have parents of over 80 so don’t want to sound like their deaths are ‘irrelevant’) but surely that puts a better perspective on everything? Is it that deadly for the ‘average’ person?

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 19:56

Plantpotpot There may have only been 2 deaths so far, but 27 of those who have tested positive are in a serious or critical condition. It's difficult to say how deadly it could be, but it's not just those with respiratory issues that have died.

Plantpotpot · 21/02/2020 20:02

How do you know that watersheep?

AvocadoOwl · 21/02/2020 20:12

Figures are on the worldometers website @Plantpotpot www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 20:12

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/?fbclid=IwAR145KeK6gjVNvBdLbO8hHw6BrvSHWDLuW4RZpI338vHMM0n7Ozn5jYiSkY

Shows the statistics, there are 17 recovered (although at the minute they don't state what this term means) 2 deaths and 27 cruise passengers who are considered serious / critical.

Plantpotpot · 21/02/2020 20:17

Sorry - I mean how do you know the people who have died did not have existing respiratory issues. Again, this doesn’t make it better - my husband and brother have asthma. I just wanted to know (genuine not goady question) how do you know the health situation of the people who have died?

Plantpotpot · 21/02/2020 20:18

As in their pre-existing health before the coronavirus

AvocadoOwl · 21/02/2020 20:19

It's a bit early to take much from the DP figures. A lot of cases are newly diagnosed (possibly even prior to symptoms starting) and it takes time for the illness to become severe.

We know that risk of death and serious illness from CV increases with age and we know that many of the passengers are relatively elderly so unfortunately I suspect the figures are going to look worse in time Sad

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 20:24

I think it unlikely that all 2200+ people who have died also happened to have previous respiratory illnesses. I think it's also very telling that the medical history of high profile deaths such as Dr Li haven't been revealed. If there had previous medical complications, then it would have mentioned as a contributing factor.

Plantpotpot · 21/02/2020 20:44

But there are no facts are there. So to categorically say that (to quote),

‘but it's not just those with respiratory issues that have died’

Is not a definite - just an opinion

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 20:49

Is not a definite - just an opinion

I apologize, it is indeed an opinion at this moment in time. However, I would be incredibly surprised if all 2200+ cases did indeed have previous respiratory issues.

runninguphills · 21/02/2020 20:53

I agree. Some early studies suggest pre existing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension are issues that increase mortality.

runninguphills · 21/02/2020 20:56

I do think that healthy young people can also succumb - they just have better odds. I'm sure how your health is at the time is a factor too. If you are run down/stressed/weak etc. You are more likely to feel more unwell with a viral infection. I can't imaging the coronavirus would be any different.
