I think with Italy it will be to do with the fact that only serious cases are getting picked up and identified at the moment. All those walking around with mild (or no) symptoms just think they have colds.

DandyArgo · 21/02/2020 10:51

Thanks Has.

KOKOagainandagain · 21/02/2020 10:55

I believe that people test negative initially because the swab is of the nose and throat whilst the virus is actually present lower in the respiratory system (eg the lungs) and it may be causing pneumonia like accumulation of fluid seen on CT scan.

As the virus spreads in the body it can then be detected by nose/throat swabs and so a second test is positive. The person was always positive but we are using upper respiratory testing to detect lower respiratory infection.

I'm not a doctor but I think that's what DrJohn saidSmile

FourTeaFallOut · 21/02/2020 10:57

Yes, that's the worrying thought hasa, that would be worse case scenario.

GorkyMcPorky · 21/02/2020 11:19

I'm really surprised by how little coverage any of the new cases are getting in the press.

anonacfr · 21/02/2020 11:27

That's so true. I get a lot of news from Facebook (I try to go international) and the coronavirus stories have all but disappeared.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 11:43

another italian just tested positive

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 11:47

1st case in Israel: a passenger of the Diamond Princess cruise ship who was found to have the virus only after returning to Israel.

Not good. Sad

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 11:49

9 new cases in Japan, of which 3 in Tokyo

Just updated.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 12:11

Its all going a bit bonkers this morning. More cases in Iran, China, south korea. 500 cases in Chinese jails.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 12:12

PLus 3 new ones literally just announced in Italy

LarkDescending · 21/02/2020 12:15

Interesting piece re the situation in South Korea. Apparently large numbers of the 9,000 strong church/sect which has linked many of the diagnosed cases congregated for the funeral of the founder’s brother between 31 Jan and 2 Feb.

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 12:18

Its all going a bit bonkers this morning.

I suspect it's because of the time passing. We know it emerged in China around December, and now it's been over a month since it's really started to hit our news / the world has become more aware.

There's been more time for it to spread by those with minimal /no symptoms, and now those who have been badly affected are showing more severe symptoms or dying.

LarkDescending · 21/02/2020 12:18

Today is parliamentary election day in Iran, so plenty of opportunity for people to mix in & around polling stations.

Twixes · 21/02/2020 12:20

I've been following this thread for a while. Thanks for all the info everyone, it's really useful.

I'm in Ireland and I rang a few medical supplies shops to see if I could get some masks and they're all out of stock. I got some on eBay which is something. I've never considered prepping before but I'm starting to think it might be a good idea...

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 12:23

LarkDescending

Polling day is definitely going to accelerate the transmission of cases. Reusing the same pens / queuing to vote, and then the voting boxes being moved to different locations.

GorkyMcPorky · 21/02/2020 12:27

Where are you getting the info on new cases? Excuse my ignorance.

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 12:30

Interesting update from China

Hubei province in China has corrected its Feb. 20 previously reported numbers to include 220 additional new cases reported "on a hand-written card" by the prison department during the night. The total is being revised from 62,442 to 62,662 cases.

It doesn't sound very organised, and you have to wonder how many cases are slipping through the net.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 12:31

reuters and worldometers

Twixes · 21/02/2020 12:47

New case in Canada, British Columbia. A woman in her 30s who has recently returned from Iran:

Twixes · 21/02/2020 12:59

I predict it'll be in Turkey next.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 13:01

South Korea have lockdown all military facilities and have announced that two cities are now special care zones (partial lockdown)

IvyBush123 · 21/02/2020 13:03

A case of Coronavirus in Lebanon according to arabnews: twitter.com/arabnews/status/1230829666736492544
and the case in Israel already mentioned on this thread. While their ancestry is not mentioned I doubt it is East Asian.

According to what I heard (of European ancestry) and people from Lebanon have the one of the lowest number of ACE receptors. So I guess it is not true that East Asians get only infected because they have the highest number of those receptors.

IvyBush123 · 21/02/2020 13:07

@Twixes I speak a little Turkish (really only a little). According to Turkish netizens there has been a case in Rize, Turkey (diagnosed with Covid Test) but the doctor who diagnosed it has been fired and blamed of spreading fake news. They then said that the test was not valid and that the person had the flu. That is what Turkish people say on twitter but I am not sure if it is true.

WaterSheep · 21/02/2020 13:11

Sounds a lot like what happened in Iran. They denied it at first... then it became too obvious to deny.
