Unreasonably irritated that only about 8 people call me by my correct name?

It’s unusual, granted but I didn’t choose it. Still, it isn’t hard to say.

A handful of friends and my sister are the only ones who say it correctly. Everyone else says a similarly spelled but very differently pronounced name.

Imagine if your name was Joan and everyone said Joanne ... it’s that sort of idea.

It doesn’t matter how many times you correct them.

Should I just give in and accept I’m a Joanne to most people?

Gaaaah I hear you! I have a pretty hopeless to pronounce (to English speakers) first name, so go by a nickname, fair enough!

BUT, most of my husband's family (which is large!) keep sending us Christmas cards with my name spelled wrong. And not just a little bit wrong. Often the initial letter followed by a complete guess (or a similar English male name grrr!!!) It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't friends with me on facebook where I use my full name Angry
The worst one was the year we received a Christmas card for everybody in the household EXCEPT me AngryAngry

It makes me feel like they don't think I'm worth 30 seconds of their time every year. I've been debating sending them cards back with wildly imaginative spellings of their names and see how they proceed....

Three Men, A Woman And A Baby (1991)

Mike and Trigger are in The Nag's Head taking bets on the name of Del and Raquel's unborn baby.

Mike So?
Trigger What?
Mike What name have they decided on?
Trigger If it's a girl they're calling her Sigourney after an actress, and if it's a boy they're naming him Rodney after Dave.

catannoyed · 18/02/2020 22:40

My name is Catriona. Only about 5 people outside my family pronounce it strictly correctly with the emphasis on the I and the o short (Cat-tree-onna). I don't mind "Catrina" but "Catri-owna" gets my hackles up. I also get called Caroline, Kirsty, Christina etc.

EstebanTheMagnificent · 18/02/2020 22:49

I had no idea that a short ‘o’ was correct in Catriona. I’ve only known one and she used ‘owna’. Every day’s a school day!

MethodToThisMadness · 18/02/2020 23:05

Catriona is deceptive because many Katrina's spell it that way. It's one of those where you have to ask!

user1473878824 · 19/02/2020 01:24

Catriona is pronounced catree-oNNa?? I’ve never met a single Catriona who isn’t ca-tree-ownah

WaterOffADucksCrack · 19/02/2020 01:38

I'm being realistic about how likely it is that people will not want to shorten it It isn't their place to decide to shorten it if it isn't their name! I have a friend called Elizabeth, has never chosen and will never choose to shorten it. And yet some people (too lazy to say her correct name) repeatedly call her a shorter name. Once she's corrected them a few times she just ignores them until they call her by her name.

My name is 4 letters and a name in it's own right. I still get asked what it's short for Hmm

Disquieted1 · 19/02/2020 01:41

OP has been massively U for complaining that people don't pronounce her name correctly, while refusing to say what her name is.
How the hell can anyone make a reasonable YABU either way?
Nonsense all the way.

mortforya · 19/02/2020 01:44

Is it Susanne(pronounced susan) and Suzanne 😉

annamie · 19/02/2020 07:52

@catannoyed that’s interesting, I would have pronounced it ca-tree-ownah too. What’s the usual pronunciation?

annamie · 19/02/2020 07:55

My name starts with an I and 99% of people who respond to my emails and texts assume it’s an L (why would I write my name with a small L??)

Iona?

AlmaMartyr · 19/02/2020 08:15

I have a fairly common name and frequently get called another fairly common name that starts with the same name (like Catherine and Caroline). It is crazy how often it happens and I have no idea why. I admit it does make me feel a bit low sometimes, as if I'm so unmemorable that no-one can even remember my name. Mostly I just roll my eyes and go with it though.

millerjane · 19/02/2020 08:23

Try telling them, could be an innocent mistake. I have a friend called Ronan ("Rohn-an") but I said "Ro-nohn" (Ro rimes with go and Nohn rhymes with none) for ages. I really didn't register that there was a difference.

HunterAngel · 19/02/2020 09:05

Everyone at work shortens my name, except one of my managers who remains the only person in 15 years at the company to ask what I like to be called and stick to that.

People don’t always get my name right. I had a colleague who got a bit huffy because I wasn’t answering him, I gave him a blank look and told him my name was Hunter not Hotel. He managed to use the wrong name while apologising for using the wrong name! A manager from another store rung up asking for Hero and somewhat bemused (there’s only four staff in my department none had that name) I passed the phone to my boss who’s first sentence was do you mean Hunter? That’s who you were just speaking to! Another apology for misnaming me. Finally a delivery driver doesn’t use my correct name but he thinks he’s being funny as my actual name is similar to a cartoon characters. Mildly annoying but not worth getting upset about, as I only see him once a week for about five minutes.

Oh I love your name. pronounced the correct way (your way)
But I so rarely hear people manage to pronounce it that way that I didn't use it for my dds.

I wonder if you are scottish? I have a feeling that Catriona pronounced your way is the correct Scottish way and Catriowna is the English version?
(just a guess)

steppemum · 19/02/2020 09:58

I have a very ordinary, recognisable name, (like Caroline) and there are quite a few people who get it wrong, and call be another name starting with the same letter (eg Catherine)

Even when told, they still continue to make the same mistake. It is, I think laziness, they just got it wrong once and then can't be bothered to make the mental leap to self correct

CuckooCuckooClock · 19/02/2020 10:21

Sometimes people do a really poor job of pronouncing their own name though so it’s hard to hear.
I knew a Henrick at uni but he always mumbled his name and then complained when people called him Henry. I don’t know why he didn’t just stress the k at the end more when he introduced his name.
Not saying you do this btw OP.

pollymere · 19/02/2020 18:03

I never knew Saoirse can be pronounced Seer-Sha or Sare-Sha. I guess I'd be grateful they didn't call me Say or see...

You just have to keep correcting people. I have a beautiful name that only one person alive uses. I think I gave up on people not shortening it and work don't even recognize its my actual name!

Rachel709 · 19/02/2020 18:06

Tell us what is your name? Who cares if people know you? Let them know you are not happy !

jwpetal · 19/02/2020 18:06

I have multiple friends that have the same names and yet say them differently. It is so embarrassing as my head gets muddled and getting to the point that I either say the name both way, avoid the name altogether or say it wrong. I don't see these people everyday and has been going on for so long that I am mortified. Think Mia, which can be Meea or mIaa or Alisa which can be Aleesa or AlIssa. Or Alicia which can be Alisha or aLiCia. Sorry this happens and I am happy to be corrected. it is okay to correct. just know that some of us can't keep it straight. I will keep trying...

Buddyboy · 19/02/2020 18:07

Brilliant!

GoatCheeseTart · 19/02/2020 18:09

Don't get me started on Anais. 'Oh you mean Anay!'
No I don't.

Hercwasonaroll · 19/02/2020 18:16

How else do you say Anais then? I taught one who was definitely Anay.

EstebanTheMagnificent · 19/02/2020 18:19

The problem with Anaïs is that many parents who use it in the uk drop the diaeresis. If ‘Anais’ were a French name it would be pronounced ‘anay’, but that name does not exist in France. It’s Anaïs, ‘an-eye-eece’.

GoatCheeseTart · 19/02/2020 18:22

It's Ah-na-ees.
