Unreasonably irritated that only about 8 people call me by my correct name?

It’s unusual, granted but I didn’t choose it. Still, it isn’t hard to say.

A handful of friends and my sister are the only ones who say it correctly. Everyone else says a similarly spelled but very differently pronounced name.

Imagine if your name was Joan and everyone said Joanne ... it’s that sort of idea.

It doesn’t matter how many times you correct them.

Should I just give in and accept I’m a Joanne to most people?

Esteban's version is better indeed. The s does not disappear.

Madcatgirl · 19/02/2020 18:27

My ds has a biblical name, it’s a very major figure in the Christmas Story, the number of people who get it wrong is ridiculous.

Pregnantbean1 · 19/02/2020 18:30

I have this problem my name is Scandinavian so I'm constantly correcting people its like as soon as people see it begins with a k they switch off, it's highly irritating

Hobbitytoes · 19/02/2020 18:31

I have an unusual surname which my whole life has been mispronounced and spelt incorrectly. My parents actually got called into school as they were concerned I couldn't spell my own name! ConfusedMy first name ends in ey. It drives me bonkers at work as people seem to drop the e. My name is right there at the bottom of email!! I also have people call me by a similar sounding name think Karen/Sharon. I just correct them and if they continue fail to answer.

Pritchyx · 19/02/2020 18:37

Not the same but similar, mine is a common name from the 90’s, but I’ve been called Hayley, Heather, Annie, Anna many times at work. My eldest DD is Georgia and is frequently referred to as Georgie, George or Georgina. Thankfully I only have to deal with nicknames for my youngest - she’ll only have Izzy or Bella... the former being my ultimate despised nickname for her! Angry

One of my good friends has an Irish name, of Chiara. I didn’t even know how to pronounce it when we first met but it really gets on her wick. It’s pronounced like key-ra. There are so many variations of her name around but she gets called Ch-ee-are-ah or Shee-are-ah. She loves correcting people, mind!

couchlover · 19/02/2020 19:04

I get this so much.

I was born Sara-louise but get sarahlouise so often, I am sure people look at the - and think 'poor dear can't write/type a h so I will help her out'. I even had this when I first got a mortgage so a pretty important document. My driving licence and passport both have Sara Louise as they can't seem to grasp its one name but I guess at least its not Sarah!

I correct so often but the worst if when you don't correct thinking it wont matter then you become more friendly with them and it does matter but its too awkward to say anything by then!

M2B19 · 19/02/2020 19:15

Surely if you didn’t know how to pronounce a name you’d ask?
A rare few people call me Lyn (not my name) so I ignore them 😂

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 19/02/2020 19:20

His name is Innkeeper, but everybody insists it should be Ian Cooper? Grin

ostravagirl · 19/02/2020 19:41

My name is Eva which in UK is pronounced as [eeva] but I’m from the continental Europe where it is pronounced more like in (for)ever. I introduce myself correctly (obviously...) or correct once but I don’t get offended as people simply assume the English pronunciation. However, I really notice when someone makes the effort of asking how to pronounce my name and/or remembers to pronounce my name “my way”. It really makes me happy and I truly appreciate it.

Rainbow · 19/02/2020 19:57

My name is a short version of a common name but I get called by the common name. Think Jo but called Josephine. I get
asked what my name is if it isn't Josephine. It's just Jo. Jo is on my birth certificate, just Jo. It drives me up the wall. Just keep correcting or ignoring x

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 19/02/2020 20:17

DD has two friends called Elena. One is of Spanish descent and the other Ukrainian. One is Elle-Aah-nah and the other is Ell-leen-a. I can't for the life of me remember which is which and it was a joyous day when they chose to be Ellie A and Ellie B.

My name ends in -ine and so many people say the name that ends in -lyn which is Not The Same.

And yes I see the irony. The problem is that while i would go out of my way not to mis-name the Elenas - or my friends Evelyn (Ev-lyn not Eve-lyn) or Aine or Cheryl (Sh not Ch) the world is full of idiots who insist on calling me the wrong name.

SallyGardens · 19/02/2020 20:29

I'm Jane. Nice and simple, or so you'd think. Jayne, Jenna, Jean, Janet, Jenny, Gina, Janie, Gin etc.

DrJackDaniels · 19/02/2020 20:38

So how would you pronounce Siobhan if not sh-Vaughn?

sarralim · 19/02/2020 21:04

My MIL especially gets my name wrong. And, come to think of it, most of my husband's family. My name is not difficult, no - more along the lines of Joan/Joanne (ie the way it's spelt changes the pronunciation, although originally the same name). I used to try to correct them. They looked back at me with confused, hurt eyes. So I stopped. Reading some of these suggestions however, I might brave it again.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 19/02/2020 21:11

I get it all the time - it doesn’t bother me.

101waystoworry · 19/02/2020 22:09

You are not being unreasonable at all, I hate it so much. It isn't exactly difficult!

Harls1969 · 19/02/2020 22:12

My husband is Iain, he's always getting post addressed to Lain 🤷. I can imagine it's annoying, it's your name. Don't worry about appearing rude (them constantly getting your name wrong is rude), just correct them EVERY time.

Cloglover · 19/02/2020 22:56

@ostravagirl

In Wales, the Welsh version of Eva is Efa, pronounced as (for)ever.

ImJustAnOliver · 19/02/2020 22:57

My name is Sophia and I am forever being called Sophie and it does my head in! Even replies on emails and doctors letters have the wrong name on and it's a battle to get the changed. I know Sophie is a very common name but Sophia isn't exactly unheard of!

evabeave · 19/02/2020 23:02

My name is often said incorrectly and almost always spelled incorrectly. The doctors receptionist once called me by a completely different name and although I don't have a common surname either I knew she meant me but I chose to ignore her until she called me correctly.
I've always hated my name!

ostravagirl · 19/02/2020 23:14

@Cloglover
When I get fed up with the mispronunciation of my name I must consider Wales as my next destination!
I have once been spelled as Heather by a taxi driver waiting at the airport...needless to say I went straight pass himBlush

strivingtosucceed · 19/02/2020 23:37

I feel your pain op, my name is admittedly foreign but every consonant is followed by a vowel, somehow EVERYONE pronounces it in mish-mash way missing out some letters altogether. It's very frustrating, aren't we all taught how to sound out words from reception?

Purplealienpuke · 19/02/2020 23:40

My daughter is the same. We gave her an Irish name, spelt the Irish way. People have called her everything they can muster up even when she has TOLD them her name! We had a shortened nickname for her when she was a child, she hates that now. Despite telling my family this they insist on calling her the shortened name 🙄

ChristmasCarcass · 20/02/2020 00:02

drjack I am assuming See-o-ban, or something similar. There are far worse manglings of Irish names out there, believe me. I’m friends with a Caoimhe, imagine how badly that gets pronounced.

HoratioNightboy · 20/02/2020 00:15

My name is Sophia and I am forever being called Sophie

I had an aunt who was a hug fan of Sophia Loren and was always talking about her, admiring her looks, style, etc. But she could never get her name right and always said Sophie Lorraine. It drove us all nuts and it wasn't even our name! We tried to so hard to get her to say it correctly, saying it very slowly but she genuinely couldn't seem hear any difference between her way and ours. Most frustrating to listen to, so I feel for you!
