Do I give him the ring back?

The man I was engaged to has decided he doesn't want to get married. Or live together. Or have any life together.

He has asked what I'm doing with the ring.

AIBU to keep it?

(Lighthearted, of course, how can I creatively tell him that I won't be returning his gift?)

Keep it.

It's only in the US that rings are given in anticipation of marriage and if the marriage doesn't work out, then it goes back whoever bought it.

In the UK they are considered gifts and you can do whatever you want with it!

WestCountryLady · 14/02/2020 21:48

He's not going to wear it and I doubt you will so why let him sell it and keep the money when it's yours?

franklymydearidontgivea · 14/02/2020 21:49

I had a similar situation, I kept it and had it made into a fabulous pendant, reminded me never to fall for a scumbag again.

My husband knows the history behind my pendant as isn't worried about it at all

LouHotel · 14/02/2020 21:50

Is it expensive enough to sell to go on holiday?

Figure you can have a broken heart in the UK or a broken heart on a beach with a cocktail.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/02/2020 21:50

YANBU

Keep it and sell it
Neither of you should return any gifts you gave each other
A gift is exactly that - the giver has no right to it

BigChocFrenzy · 14/02/2020 21:51

and he's a CF for asking when he broke off the engagement

Winebottle · 14/02/2020 21:53

He broke it off so keep it. Sell it. Of course you are not going to wear it but neither is he. You deserve the money more than he does.

HollowTalk · 14/02/2020 21:54

I think if you break off the engagement you return the ring, but if he does, then he can fuck off you get to keep it.

KatherineJaneway · 14/02/2020 21:57

I wouldn't return it. I'd sell it and keep the money as it was he who broke it off, not you.

viques · 14/02/2020 22:01

Sell it and give the money to a Women's Refuge to support other women let down by men.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/02/2020 22:01

Legally it’s yours, it was a gift. Stuff him, keep it.

No way I’d give my engagement ring back.

BillHadersNewWife · 14/02/2020 22:02

I always think it's the height of tackiness for a man to mention the ring after a break up no matter WHO broke up with who.

Keep it.

Newspaperwrapping · 14/02/2020 22:05

I know legally you can keep it but I would feel I was keeping something that wasn’t mine and I’d be a bit superstitious about keeping it or benefitting from it.

If his actions has cost you actual money then I think you do have the right to sell it and tell him so.

Otherwise if he just ended things because he genuinely didn’t think you would be a good married couple for life, I’d give it back with good grace, to thank him for being honest with his feelings and letting you down before things got any further.

Quizacabusi · 14/02/2020 22:06

I’d 100% keep it.

namechangetheworld · 14/02/2020 22:07

He broke it off - keep it, sell it, buy yourself something lovely.

BlueHarry · 14/02/2020 22:10

He has asked what I'm doing with the ring.

Say, "I'm listing it on eBay as we speak. If you're interested in buying it then let me know and I'll send you the link".

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 14/02/2020 22:11

Is it worth enough to sell it? It’ll have lost masses of value, sadly...

I’d give it back, I wouldn’t want the reminder and most rings aren’t ever going to feel like you get enough for them, but it’s your call, unless it’s a family heirloom or something.

I hope you’re alright Flowers

JinglingHellsBells · 14/02/2020 22:11

I gave mine back.

I didn't want it as a reminder of a sad time (he broke it off.)

Plantainchips · 14/02/2020 22:12

Return it

ByeMF · 14/02/2020 22:14

I'd sell it and go on holiday.

Drum2018 · 14/02/2020 22:14

I'd definitely sell it and keep the cash for myself.

FamilyOfAliens · 14/02/2020 22:18

I had to give mine back as he hadn’t finished paying for it (it was from Argos and I was 17) Grin

katy1213 · 14/02/2020 22:21

That's classy on his part! You will look back and be glad you didn't marry such a little man.

Although it would be fun should you meet him down the line and see it on another woman's finger: "Oh, how sweet, he gave you my ring. Lovely, isn't it?'

leli · 14/02/2020 22:21

Give it back. Bad karma. Let him have it.

DecemberSnow · 14/02/2020 22:22

Is it a heirloom or have sentemental value to him / his family?

If not, I would sell the sing....
