Acquitted but still impeached ... Trump thread 99

I’ll tell you a funny story. I’m a member of a very right-wing US politics online discussion group for kicks. The moderator of the group controls - and gets involved in - every discussion. (I should say the membership of this group is over 50K and the number of posts a day is generally 30 or so.) She’s also a typical Trumpian in that she reels off the standard “lamestream mass media” etc lines” and she mutes anyone who disagrees with her.

Anyway, I took her on eventually. She said that the Democratic candidates wanted to get rid of the Constitution. To this, I replied Trump flouts the Constitution on a regular basis. “What? Provide examples!” she replies. “Emoluments clause,” I replied. “That’s just one.”

GUYS. SHE HAD NOT HEARD OF THE EMOLUMENTS CLAUSE.

She then just spat something about she doesn’t read mass media lies and that’s why she didn’t know and muted me.

I have just worked it out: people call it an epicentre because they think that word has something to do with epidemic. Oh dear.

More recently than the bubonic or the cholera, I offer the Spanish Flu in 1918-20, which according to Wikipedia "infected 500 million people—about a quarter of the world's population at the time. The death toll is estimated to have been anywhere from 17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the deadliest epidemics in human history." H1N1 recurred in a less lethal form or perhaps one being combatted with better science! as swine flu in 2009, which only killed 18,036 or so. "Meanwhile, some studies estimated that 11 to 21 percent of the global population at the time – or around 700 million to 1.4 billion people (out of a total of 6.8 billion) – contracted the illness."

I don't think the Chinese were responsible for either of those, or even irresponsible for them.

PerkingFaintly · 27/03/2020 22:37

I think that's too kind an explanation, AskingQuestionsAllTheTime.

A certain sort of person just likes making words longer and (in their mind) grander. The sort who says "myself" instead of "me".Grin

Watched Trump at yesterday's CV-19 update:

When asked by a reporter what more could Governors do, Trump said they could show some appreciation.

Then said he has told the leader of the federal government's coronavirus response not to call the governors of Michigan and Washington state, two of the biggest hotspots in the country, because they are "not appreciative."

TRUMP: "I think they should be appreciative... I say Mike, don't call the governor of Washington. You're wasting your time with him. Don't call the woman in Michigan. It doesn't make any difference what happens. You know what I say? If they don't treat you right, I don't call."

"If they don't treat you right, I don't call," Trump said of Whitmer. " (Pence) is a different type of person. He'll call quietly anyway."

Some good news from Brazil, where Trumpier-than-Trump President says Coronavirus is a liberal media plot, the favella gangs are enforcing a lockdown showing who is more socially responsible.

And when those guys tell you to stay home, you stay home.

TheSparklyPussycat · 28/03/2020 11:33

I too watched Trump's briefing, but turned it off after a while, as it felt like I was going into trance Shock The voice he uses is very much like the sort of voice that hypnotists use

TheSparklyPussycat · 28/03/2020 11:35

I was watching on the Guardian feed which was live for an hour or so before the actual briefing. So could see them preparing for the briefing.

lionheart · 28/03/2020 13:28

Good lord. This is mind-boggling.

'"[Trump is] so attentive to the scientific literature & the details & the data. I think his ability to analyze & integrate data that comes out of his long history in business has really been a real benefit”

AcrossthePond55 · 28/03/2020 14:29

I don't even bother to tune in to the daily briefing propaganda session anymore. His lying and obfuscation is killing people. And I do mean that literally. People are dying because he's incapable of seeing the truth, let alone telling it. I'll get my info from reliable sources, thank you very much.

The change in his approval rating is terrifying. Although sources say it's not going to last.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/03/2020 14:39

I doubt it will last past the individuals involved either dying of it themselves or becoming very ill, or having friends or family members who die or get very ill. At that point he will be blamed for not preventing it, just he is approved at the moment because it has not yet happened to them.

When there is a threat which is perceived as an outside threat, approval for the leader always goes up. Churchill's was very high during the war, for instance. As soon as the immediate threat is over, the approval falls -- Churchill lost the election in 1945. So long as the immediate threat is over in November and enough Republican supporters or their family and friends have suffered as a result of cv19, I don't see Trump's popularity staying high by then.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 28/03/2020 17:38

So the theory goes that the reason so many Usainans approve of Trump is a fundamental attitudinal thing. Where is most countries, people would say, "That guy is a liar, a fraud, a narcissist and an idiot, and he's a billionaire and President of the United States! ....Something should be done!"

Whereas in the USA, (some) people say, "That guy is a liar, a fraud, a narcissist and an idiot, and he's a billionaire and President of the United States! ....That could be me, one day!"

AcrossthePond55 · 28/03/2020 22:31

Well, this American doesn't think that way nor do any of my friends.

Scrotus was elected due to apathy and over confidence on the part of Democrats and Bernie Sanders' refusal to endorse Hillary after she won the nomination.

Hillary won the popular vote, but lost in the Electoral College.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 28/03/2020 22:32

And so it begins.

People With Intellectual Disabilities May Be Denied Lifesaving Care Under These Plans as Coronavirus Spreads.

Disaster preparedness plans in Washington and Alabama say people with cognitive issues are a lower priority for lifesaving treatment. Disability advocacy organizations have asked the federal government to clarify the plans.

DetroitLake · 28/03/2020 23:21

Disgusting directive, isn't it north west paws. I saw this news earlier today. Not saying much for us as humans is it..

Noone is going to want to save me, either, but that's ok. I'm not much of a loss to anyone.

UYScuti · 28/03/2020 23:41

People with cognitive issues are a lower priority
I can hardly believe that that is real, absolutely terrifying😱
'cognitive issues' that's an extremely vague term that could be interpreted almost anyway you want.
Detroit you have as much value as anyone else does!!

DetroitLake · 29/03/2020 00:01

I'll try not to get Corona then noone has to refuse to treat me. Older, not in great health, poor, and I camp rather than live in a house. I can't get treatment at the best of times. I'm good with it. Save the medical help for those who contribute to society. I've got Jesus, and He will either take me home or not.

I would not want to live at the expense of another person. Unless it's my ex husband.

I'm in tears reading what society has come to. How did we get here?

DetroitLake · 29/03/2020 00:17

When I said save the help for those who contribute, I mean in different ways. Not economic. Intellectual disabilities, older, people have things to give. I'm pretty tired out and sad. As I said, I'm trying my best not to get it, whilst accepting that may well not be what happens.

lionheart · 29/03/2020 03:39

'Tired out and sad' doesn't mean you have no value, Detroit. Not at all.

Flowers
DetroitLake · 29/03/2020 03:54

I'll do my best for whoever I can while I'm around. Im planning on trying to survive this by not catching it. But whatever is God's plan for me, I'll submit to. Thanks for the kind words. You take care, lionheart.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 29/03/2020 09:59

DetroitLake You are strong, you are valued, you are a survivor. We will all get through this. Take care - we are thinking of you. Flowers

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/03/2020 12:27

Meanwhile, Trump suggested quarantining New York to prevent anyone getting out taking covid19 with them, and then rapidly rescinded the suggestion as soon as Cuomo pointed out that if he did that the stock market would crash.

"They're having problems down in Florida. A lot of New Yorkers are going down. We don't want that," he said as he left the White House.

Ah, now I understand. He really is a disaster as a leader, isn't he.

AcrossthePond55 · 29/03/2020 12:54

So, apparently the CDC has issued a 'travel advisory' for NY, NJ, and CT asking residents not to travel out of the area. Problem is, the people it's most likely aimed at aren't likely to pay any attention to it.
