David Lammy and Jamaican deportees

David Lammy’s speech, in which he is critical of the government’s decision to deport convicted offenders to Jamaica, was very impassioned. However, it was disingenuous of him to have made the connection between this issue and the Windrush scandal. The two are not the same; the Windrush debacle was a disgrace and involved numbers of innocent individuals being caught up and deported illegally to the Caribbean . Those who were deported today were convicted criminals who served at least 12 months in prison and crucially, they were subject to due process. Unless there is evidence to indicate that other nationals of different ethnicities and races, such as white Australians, have not been subject to the same level of enforcement of this policy , he is wrong to label it as a racist move by the government.

If some people need to be deported, send them to serve sentence in their own countries. Not chase them up after they served their time and tried to rebuild their lives. That's not justice.

Someone i know was jumped by two men in a pub carpark

He fought back and did them considerably more damage

Personally i think it was self defense but the judge disagreed and he went to prison

I believe simon

I also believe simon. Justice is a commodity that's totally for sale.

Sorry I don’t. People are great at lying or justifying their actions.

Mistigri · 15/02/2020 16:05

If a British person commits a crime in another country, they should be deported and we should take responsibility

You mean like Shamima Begum?

FET2020 · 15/02/2020 16:22

Mistigri yes, she should be brought back here and punished

Buster72 · 15/02/2020 16:25

At least three British sex offenders have been deported from Australia despite moving there as kids and having no more familial ties with the U.K.

Where is the faux outrage for them.

Even if someone may be lying, a thing like getting into a fight can happen to basically anyone. Deportation on top of a prison sentence is no way a just punishment.

I live in NZ*. For the last few years, Australia has been deporting some nasty career criminals here, including members of organised crime gangs. They are NZers by birth, but who have spent their entire lives in Australia.

Whatever caused their criminality is precisely nothing to do with NZ, and we can do without Australia dumping their dregs on us.

Exactly how NZ is supposed to rehabilitate such people- here - not so that they can have a nice life, but so they don't ruin other people's - is a bit of a mystery.

*Btw, I am a citizen of NZ by grant. To me, it makes sense to become a citizen of the country you live in. It protects you against administrative cock-ups and other complications because they do happen. There was no sacrifice other than the fee.

BurneyFanny · 15/02/2020 17:53

Citizenship is easier to obtain in some places than in others.

I'm an EU citizen. My country of origin does not allow dual citizenship. If i ever take up British - I'd lose mine. That would mean massive taxes if i am to inherit some family property, and losing all the perks of EU membership. Thanks brexshit 😑
