Just catching up on This Mornings interview with a flat earther-can’t get my head around his debate but at the same time he makes some points that sound very realistic and he seems knowledgable . But I do believe our earth is round and not flat but very open to other people’s views , so just wondered what you think Mumsnetters?? Sorry if there’s been a thread like this before....
YANBU=our earth is round
YABU= it is flat

@Cattenberg I know someone like this, too but she SMOKES!!!!

It's ok though because they are rollies. Pure tobacco. (except for the filters she uses).

I am speechless.

NotALurker2 · 11/02/2020 21:39

"Anti-vaxxers" being included with people who believe the earth is flat is just another example of the kind of attitude that creates these extremes. As long as you think that anyone who has opinions that differ from yours (re: vaccinating or not) is an extremist, then we will continue to have people believing the earth is flat and lots of other nonsense.

FrippEnos · 11/02/2020 21:40

Its Turtles all the way down.

MyHairIsSoapy · 11/02/2020 21:40

Why would the government pay every scientist and pilot to lie to the other 50% of the population? What’s the benefit in us thinking it’s round if it is flat? No gain is there.

SaintFlamingo · 11/02/2020 21:41

Flat earth=anti vax

AuldAlliance · 11/02/2020 21:42

Copernicus and Christopher Columbus are spinning in their graves right now.
Spinning.
Like the earth does round the sun.
Not like plates do, other than on poles at the circus.

Did I miss the announcement saying that, since Brexit means the UK will have to apply to be part of Copernicus, all his theories and those of his successors, some of whom died for their ideas, are now optional, too?

I wonder what Darwin would make of a process whereby humans who have more access to information than ever before become paradoxically hellbent on reversing centuries of intellectual evolution.

GeraltOfRivia · 11/02/2020 21:42

You don't need to "believe" the world is round. It's an objective and observable fact.

Forcryingoutloudwtf · 11/02/2020 21:43

Yabu starting such a silly thread

NotALurker2 · 11/02/2020 21:44

@SaintFlamingo You are a part of the problem.

MoonlightMistletoe · 11/02/2020 21:44

We won't slip off the edge, the ice wall will melt and we will all end up under water.

Climate change causes sea levels to rise.

Makes sense.

Lexplorer · 11/02/2020 21:45

I want to know who they think lives at the edges? Is it the Americas on the left edge and the Pacific Ocean on the right edge? Or Ireland on the left and the Atlantic on the right? I'm intrigued. Also I wonder if there are people in Australia thinking we in the UK don't exist because they've never been here.

ExEUCitizen · 11/02/2020 21:45

Cattenberg, about "I’m not putting chemicals in my body”, grab some popcorn and ask her how she manages to eat anything.

Mumsnet's had a video on the site which mentioned the debunked MMR-Autism fraud. I was thinking that surely that wasn't needed any more.

MoonlightMistletoe · 11/02/2020 21:45

Not everyone who believes in flat earth are anti vaxxers

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2020 21:46

Are flat earthers afraid to dig their garden in case they fall into space?

Oh shit. I hadn't thought of that. I'm trying to do my garden at the moment. Must be more careful.

Mordred · 11/02/2020 21:46

The Venerable Bede, in De Temporum Rationes (The Reckoning of Time), 8th Century England:

"We call the earth a globe, not as if the shape of a sphere were expressed in the diversity of plains and mountains, but because, if all things are included in the outline, the earth’s circumference will represent the figure of a perfect globe. … For truly it is an orb placed in the centre of the universe; in its width it is like a circle, and not circular like a shield but rather like a ball, and it extends from its centre with perfect roundness on all sides.”

De temporum rationes was a barnstoming rollercoaster of a bestseller in its day and was used as a science text throughout the Carolingian Empire for hundreds of years. Bede also worked out that tides were caused by the moon. All educated medieval men and women knew the earth to be a globe.

Mummy0ftwo12 · 11/02/2020 21:47

of course the earth is flat, and on top of a giant tortoise held up by four elephants.

cdtaylornats · 11/02/2020 21:48

At least flat-earthers will be safe in a zombie apocalypse

TeaAndWine · 11/02/2020 21:49

I agree with a PP and @VettiyaIruken and echo their points.

WHY??!

I just keep coming back to it.

9/11, moon landing, I can kind of see why 'they' would lie about them, not that I believe the conspiracies, but there's at least a motive for a cover up.

The flat earth conspiracy, there just isn't one. My ex, who I'm still friends with, is a flat earther, and I often ask him this. Why??. He can't ever really answer. He bleats on about the ever present 'They' and how 'They' like to keep us in the dark.
That's it. That's all he can answer. Seems a lot of hard work to me for very little point.

ExEUCitizen · 11/02/2020 21:50

Who else remembers the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide? That was a good one. I really should find a life off the web internet.

Mordred · 11/02/2020 21:51

Copernicus, by the way, never even mentions the SHAPE of the Earth in his works, only argues its position in relation to the sun. The reason for that is that everyone in his time knew the Earth was a globe.

So any flat earthers who claim that Copernicus came up with the idea of a globe earth are wrong.

NotALurker2 · 11/02/2020 21:52

@MoonlightMistletoe I know, it's just gratuitous crap-throwing. Why miss an opportunity.

NightsOfCabiria · 11/02/2020 21:52

I feel sorry for people like this.

I know a young earth creationist (via work) and she and her family believe all the conspiracies going due to having no TV or radio and only watching selected YouTube channels. They only mix with others like them.

She thinks the earth is only 6,000 years old and that the devil planted dinosaur fossils to test our faith. She also believes in witches and warlocks.

Its bizarre. She has a university education and on first impressions, appears normal. She’s 60. I just smile and nod.

Mordred · 11/02/2020 21:52

Someone mentioned Creationists upthread: even they don't believe the earth is flat!

Its round because........

Flat earth- what’s your opinion??
JillAmanda · 11/02/2020 21:55

I love how every few posts someone will pop up and say “oblate spheroid” all pleased with themselves 😂
