Just catching up on This Mornings interview with a flat earther-can’t get my head around his debate but at the same time he makes some points that sound very realistic and he seems knowledgable . But I do believe our earth is round and not flat but very open to other people’s views , so just wondered what you think Mumsnetters?? Sorry if there’s been a thread like this before....
YANBU=our earth is round
YABU= it is flat

Honestly you lot, did you not listen at school? The flat earth movement dates back to when people in ye olde kingdom of East Anglia never left the area and their world really was flat.

NumbersStation · 11/02/2020 21:59

Phil and holly are probably not the best people to go at the moment to discuss flat earth.

The only thing going round in their world are rumours.

KenDodd · 11/02/2020 22:11

"Anti-vaxxers" being included with people who believe the earth is flat is just another example of the kind of attitude that creates these extremes.

Rubbish.
The common denominator between anti vaxers and flat earthers (and climate change deniers) is they don't believe scientists and prefer to put their trust in complete nonsense they read on the internet. They also, and with a completely straight face, call this internet reading their 'research'.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 11/02/2020 22:16

This isn't something that's a matter of opinion.

85notout · 11/02/2020 22:16

I love how every few posts someone will pop up and say “oblate spheroid” all pleased with themselves 😂

I know, pathetic isn't it? Grin

NotALurker2 · 11/02/2020 22:17

@KenDodd Could not disagree more. I have also heard anti-vaxxers called racists because it has to do with keeping their blood 'pure.' Also absurd.

My DC are vaccinated but I think the debate is a legitimate one.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 11/02/2020 22:19

The earth is round. That is an indisputable fact and so opinion is surplus to requirements.

Musmerian · 11/02/2020 22:19

Are you for real? He can’t have made any good points or know any stuff as this is utter bollocks and easily probable.

TARSCOUT · 11/02/2020 22:20

I wind my BIL up that I am a flat earther because it drives him crazy. Chemtrails I actually do believe in and CVirus well population needs to be controlled somehow..........

Isleepinahedgefund · 11/02/2020 22:21

My local flat earth society used to meet in a pub called The Globe. True story.

I love flat earthers - always cheer me up 😃 my favourite bit is where they say that when you get to the edge you teleport to the other side - because THAT'S more sensible/logical than the Earth being round, isn't it!

FriedasCarLoad · 11/02/2020 22:21

Damnit I pressed the wrong voting button Blush

It’s round, and I’m not an idiot (just a bit clumsy)! Grin

samarrange · 11/02/2020 22:23

I watched a documentary on Netflix about this a while ago and I had to turn it off as these people were just so stupid

I saw a great documentary (from the US, I think) where they got four conspiracy-type people in a room. One was into flat earth, one was anti-vaxx, one was "the moon landings were faked", and I forget the last one. It was really funny because for each loony idea, the other three were all immediately able to pick massive holes in it. But it didn't occur to any of them that if all the other people's beliefs were so easily refuted, theirs might not be so smart after all.

MonnaLIza · 11/02/2020 22:25

That the Earth is not felt has been known for a long time: this is a good place to start: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spherical_Earth

Galileo Galilei lived later than 1511 - he was born in 1564 and died in 1642 and he did not prove that the earth was round, that was common knowledge by that time - what put him into trouble was to demonstrate that it was not the Earth at the centre of the universe but the sun (Heliocentrism) - of course now we know that the sun is not the centre of the universe but only of our solar system.

I believe that in silence there is still so much to discover, however I also believed that flat earthers are a bunch of superstitious, attention-seeking people who go against car evidence. Whatever next the non-graviters? The cold-sun society? The solid-air group?

We see evidence of the Earth being round every day, every season and every time we take a plane. Seriously, it is dangerous to give people such as the flat earthers any kind of platform.

Bouledeneige · 11/02/2020 22:26

If its flat there's a very simple way for the 'global' flat earthers society to prove it - just jump off the edge! I'd like to see that video on youtube.

Jaxhog · 11/02/2020 22:29

People believe all sorts of odd things. You only have to look at religion and politics!

PurpleTrilby · 11/02/2020 22:30

Some people just have to be right and the keepers of the one truth / cult / bullshit.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 11/02/2020 22:32

I haven't rtft but flat earthers are hilarious and scary in equal measure.

I was on an online forum once and I asked a flat earther to explain the coriolis effect if the the Earth was indeed flat.
I got told to sod off in no uncertain terms 😂

LynetteScavo · 11/02/2020 22:33

If it's flat what happens at the edge? Does the sea fall off? Why has no one ever managed to reach the edge? People claim to have seen all sorts of things but no ones seen the edge of the earth.

And what is underneath?

LowbrowVictoriana · 11/02/2020 22:37

Yes, but surely flat earthers don’t actually believe it?

I always presumed it was an exercise in persuasion, debating skills, creative writing (of realistic and convincing sci-fi), and, in the case of those that appear on TV to argue their case, acting.
Surely the “... all around the globe” strapline was the giveaway that they’re just having a laugh?

Or perhaps, more soberingly, those at the top are having a laugh and enjoying the challenge of seeing how many gullible idiots they can convert to their cause. That’s pretty horrible, actually.

x2boys · 11/02/2020 22:38

What I don't understand about flat earthe r,s is what do they think scientists have lied from s about the earth being round why what would be the point ?

NotALurker2 · 11/02/2020 22:39

@LynetteScavo A manhole cover.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/02/2020 22:40

This is similar to those people who dont believe the holocaust happened, and that Auschwitz didnt exist.
And dinosaur deniers

Veterinari · 11/02/2020 22:43

SleepingStandingUp · 11/02/2020 22:43

And what is underneath? a giant tortoise on the back of four elephants?

Tigerty · 11/02/2020 22:47
