Just catching up on This Mornings interview with a flat earther-can’t get my head around his debate but at the same time he makes some points that sound very realistic and he seems knowledgable . But I do believe our earth is round and not flat but very open to other people’s views , so just wondered what you think Mumsnetters?? Sorry if there’s been a thread like this before....
YANBU=our earth is round
YABU= it is flat

I'd like the cats who constantly poo in my garden to get pushed off.

Likethebattle · 11/02/2020 21:13

Some of these dafties were going to sail to the edge of the world to prove their theory. I always wonder if they did set out and what the theory was for not finding the edge.

JassyRadlett · 11/02/2020 21:13

How would they explain being able to fly from the USA to the UK, to Africa then on to Australia and finally back to the USA again without having to retrace your flight path? I'm no scientist but doesn't that prove the earth can't be flat?%

To be fair some of these nutters think Australia is made up by the conspiracy and doesn’t really exist and all Australians in other countries are actors.

I continue to wait for my paycheque.

Thelnebriati · 11/02/2020 21:13

Also I've flown around the world.

Or did you?
dun dun deeer!

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2020 21:15

I've flown across the world, over the edge, across the flip side upside down and then back.

Hingeandbracket · 11/02/2020 21:17

Why can't I see the poll?

Songsofexperience · 11/02/2020 21:18

The flat earth thing a sign stupidity is winning. Turns back the clock on centuries of science. Fucking tragic.

dustibooks · 11/02/2020 21:18

Like many other people, I have been in a plane at 35,000 feet and looked out of the window.

The Earth is most definitely not flat.

This is a video of an interview with an ex-flat earther, and it gives a very interesting insight into why people get involved in flat earth. It often starts with a distrust in government and mainstream science, and eventually the flat-earther doesn't even bother reading scientific papers or doing any research into non-flat earth sources, because they are convinced the scientists are all lying anyway. So their only source of information becomes flat earth websites and videos, and they get stuck in this echo chamber.

Thelnebriati · 11/02/2020 21:20

Orrr...that was a man on the runway holding up a picture.

GrumpyHoonMain · 11/02/2020 21:21

It’s a fact that the earth isn’t flat. Not a belief

SueEllenMishke · 11/02/2020 21:22

They all need sticking in a box with the anti -vaxxers.

Apart from the fact it's obviously not flat I'm yet to hear a decent argument about why there would be a conspiracy about it.

Thelnebriati · 11/02/2020 21:23

Have they said whats on the bottom? I hope its pizza crust.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 11/02/2020 21:25

Google Frank Abagnale! (Or any other famous conman!)

Natsku · 11/02/2020 21:26

I'm a member of the Flat Earth Society (got a membership card and all), it's mostly just a debating thing - defending an impossible position. Bound to be some people that actually believe but most don't, they just love the debate.

frumpety · 11/02/2020 21:26

You can't have an opinion on a fact.

Really ? How did we end up with Brexit then ? Grin

RuffleCrow · 11/02/2020 21:29

Did anyone else think that the main guy from Behind the Curve was a dead ringer for Jim Carrey's creepy 'best mate' in The Truman Show?

serialtester · 11/02/2020 21:31

Are we really at a point where we are discussing bad science on daytime TV and that some people are treating this shit as fact???

Standrewsschool · 11/02/2020 21:33

But the Flat Earthers don’t think it’s bad science...

Cherrysoup · 11/02/2020 21:33

They dont believe in the international space station?

I watched it fly across the sky one night with my dad, who got all excited!

And where are these ice walls?

longwayoff · 11/02/2020 21:34

I refer you to Terry Pratchett. Give my regards to the Great a Tuin 🐢

Cattenberg · 11/02/2020 21:35

A friend of a friend is a flat-earther. She’s a hippy and loves New Age woo-woo. She had home births (apparently without any midwife present), home educates her children and is an anti-vaxxer.

She’s bright enough to have a degree, and she has travelled to other continents, so she must have seen Earth from a plane. I do wonder WTF she’s thinking. Our mutual friend is also a hippy anti-vaxxer, and I had to bite my tongue at a friend’s birthday party when she started on her conspiracy theories about vaccines and finished with “I’m not putting chemicals in my body”.

KenDodd · 11/02/2020 21:38

I get really annoyed with flat earther/anti vaxers etc.

These people will be responsible for spreading coronavirus more than need be because they won't believe the scientists.

Bumfuzzled · 11/02/2020 21:38

He said the Earth was flat with an ice wall all around it

I wonder what the Venn Diagram intersection of flat earthers vs climate change campaigners looks like? In theory there should be a very large intersect as it would be most unfortunate if the ice wall melted and we just all slipped off the edge.

I’d not mind so much them getting air time to spout their bollocks if they were also hell bent on helping to stop the ice melting.

MashedSpud · 11/02/2020 21:39

Are flat earthers afraid to dig their garden in case they fall into space?
