Flat earth- what’s your opinion??

Just catching up on This Mornings interview with a flat earther-can’t get my head around his debate but at the same time he makes some points that sound very realistic and he seems knowledgable . But I do believe our earth is round and not flat but very open to other people’s views , so just wondered what you think Mumsnetters?? Sorry if there’s been a thread like this before....
YANBU=our earth is round
YABU= it is flat

All the time, effort, planning, money and secrecy that would have to go into it for zero actual benefit. It's not logical.

I remember driving across the outback in Australia where you can go miles and miles in a straight line and see the curve of the horizon.

I think the 5% who said you were being unreasonable must have ticked the wrong box in error. If not, then there are an alarmingly high proportion of total fruit loops on Mumsnet.

I have (had) a friend who's a flat earther.
She also believes -
The moon landings are fake.
Is an anti vaxer.
Thinks the EU is a big sinister conspiracy so voted Leave.
Aids was deliberately created to kill African people (vaccines cause it).

I don't bother arguing with people who hold any of these beliefs anymore, no point.

Good point. How do flat feathers explain time zones?

Actually I am pretty sure I saw a documentary where one of those people claimed Australia wasn't real...

As far as conspiracy theories go, the fake moon landing is a lot more convincing by the way.

Does anybody know how they explain people travelling all the way around the globe back to where they started?

Holly asked this and Phil cut in with well they think you just go in a straight line, but that doesn't answer the question (not that any of their theories actually scientifically answer any questions!).

Have had a quick google and can't spot their views on that.

Even medieval people didn't think the earth was flat. That they did was a 19th century invention.

It is worth mentioning that The Flat Earth theory was actually borne out of a challenge to see how well participants could debate in favour of an utterly ridiculous proposition that they didn't themselves actually believe in. No doubt some people are still promoting it for that reason. They must be amazed by the number of fucknuggets they've managed to convince.

I spent a whole year being sucked in by the topic, seriously I was obsessed. Every time I look at the moon I'm reminded of the Flat Earth Society.

People thought I was crazy. I don't talk about it anymore but I do believe it could be "flat".

If you look at the videos on YouTube of people in space it does appear they are on strings. Be careful you can easily get sucked in 😂

Ah, but don't you all realise that we are living in the Matrix and everything that you believe to be true is actually made up by "the Man" to keep us under control.

Obviously it’s flat because the dragons live all around the edge and if it was round they would fall off, duh.

Oh and Antarctica is actually the "ice wall" it goes all the way around and that's supposedly why there's the "Antarctic Treaty"

Live and let live - he's not hurting anyone in his views and thank goodness we have people questioning things... you can't believe everything you're told, surely we can all agree on that?

Rubbish. I don't think these people are funny or harmless eccentrics. Their views are dangerous and should be called out as such, they are not of equal value and deserving of equal respect as those of experts who actually know what they're taking about. I'd put money on him also being an anti vaxer and climate change denier.

I'm pretty sure Ancient Egyptians knew the earth is spherical because when ships approached they first saw the top of the mast, and the rest of the ship came into view from the top down.

I’ve seen a photo of the Earth taken from space, it’s round!!! What possible argument for it not being round can there be?

Also gravity, visible curvature, being able to fly / sail all the way round ... how do they propose all that other stuff works if this is a disc? Do they also believe in the elephants and great A’Tuin the sky turtle?

If the earth is flat, what would be the point of going to great lengths to convince everyone that it's round? If it was a huge conspiracy, what is there to actually gain by lying?
