Just catching up on This Mornings interview with a flat earther-can’t get my head around his debate but at the same time he makes some points that sound very realistic and he seems knowledgable . But I do believe our earth is round and not flat but very open to other people’s views , so just wondered what you think Mumsnetters?? Sorry if there’s been a thread like this before....
YANBU=our earth is round
YABU= it is flat

My opinion on flat earthers is that they’re stupid.

AriadnesFilament · 11/02/2020 20:32

Flat earth 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Ffs 🙄

roobledoo · 11/02/2020 20:32

Whatever you choose to believe, I'm always so amused at how angry people get over what people choose to believe.

Live and let live - he's not hurting anyone in his views and thank goodness we have people questioning things... you can't believe everything you're told, surely we can all agree on that?

Find all these 'conspiracies' fascinating. Brilliant to hear other people's perspectives on the world we live in. How boring would life be if we all had the same thoughts!

SummerPavillion · 11/02/2020 20:33

With members all around the globe Maybe they've just got a really self-deprecating sense of humour

Sparklybanana · 11/02/2020 20:33

See this is how the anti-vax movement started off. "he had good arguments". He doesn't. I didn't see it but proving that the earth is round is a simple maths problem which was first solved in ancient times. It's been proven by the flat earthers themselves although I'm still not sure if that particular video is a giant piss take.
CGI for being in space is a laugh. Have you seen 60s CGI effects? If that in itself doesn't prove it's real I don't know what does!! There are countless videos of being high up in space, showing the curvature of the earth and suspiciously none of the edge of the earth. There is also the question of 'why?'. It makes no sense for there to be a global conspiracy about the shape of the planet - it doesn't matter if it's square so why does there need to be a historical, highly effective conspiracy to make it a sphere? It's too easy to prove with globe theory to why facetime conversations between oz and UK show night and day, why we need timezones, why we have eclipses, why the tide works, why flights go north, why compasses work, why we see the stars the way we do etc etc etc. Flat earth theory does explain it in the way bible munchers explain why there aren't any dinosaurs (they couldn't swim in Noah's flood), but ignore huge amounts of basic science because (surprise surprise) it doesn't fit the theory.

anonacfr · 11/02/2020 20:33

Flat earthers, because even creationists need someone to laugh at.

Grin You win Mumsnet!

Cam77 · 11/02/2020 20:34

Amuses how people think our incompetent useless world leaders are somehow capable of pulling off earth shattering mega conspiracies. While most conspiracy theories are fantastical nonsense, there are a couple of events where some conspiracy theories are possibly closer to the truth than the official version, or at least there is certainly some facets of the facts being distorted - see the death of Diana and see 9/11 IMO.

ExEUCitizen · 11/02/2020 20:34

Good grief. But I do believe our earth is round and not flat but very open to other people’s views

It is this kind of complete and total utterly senseless balderdash that will destroy science, history and this age of civilization.

You are being totally unreasonable to give more than two seconds thought to this "alternative perspective" after nearly two centuries of science. The world is round. If some fools wish to go mad and hide from reality that's up to them but the rest of us have absolutely no obligation whatsoever to lose our wits and give them headspace.

Butterymuffin · 11/02/2020 20:34

It's YouTube's fault. Read an article last year where people at the Flat Earth conference Grin were interviewed about the source of their views and the majority attributed it to watching YouTube videos on the subject.

The question we should be asking is: who's behind the videos that are trying to undermine people's belief in established scientific fact, and what's their agenda?

PapayaCoconut · 11/02/2020 20:34

I don't believe in Paris, because I've never been there.

shockthemonkey · 11/02/2020 20:35

Actually even flat earthers say the earth is round, AND flat too. Like a dinner plate.

I think it's the spherical bit they object to.

They are of course loons.

ThePants999 · 11/02/2020 20:35

@roobledoo The trouble is, if you DON'T get angry at people who refuse to listen to evidence and get stuck on a conspiracy theory, you end up with dead children who didn't get their vaccinations.

ExEUCitizen · 11/02/2020 20:36

After nearly two centuries of modern science I should add. Sparklybanana is perfectly correct to point to science and knowledge from older cultures, and indeed other cultures.

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2020 20:37

I have voted YABU for shits and giggles to wind up people because this question is just SO ridiculous.

Yes I fell off the edge when travelling to visit Santa in person.

Honest.

EstebanTheMagnificent · 11/02/2020 20:37

very open to other people’s views

You don’t have to be open to views which are a) batshit and b) wrong.

As the saying goes, if one person tells you that it’s raining and another tells you that it’s sunny, you don’t give equal credence to both. You look out of the window and find out for yourself.

YeOldeTrout · 11/02/2020 20:38

So the reason for the conspiracy is for people to skim lots of money off in what's called a "space programme".

I guess it .. makes them happy?
It's so much more comforting to think you have all the answers, that some all powerful group are in charge, then actually everyone is on the brink of screwing up all the time. And there's a huge amount of how the universe works that even the best scientists don't know, meanwhile humans may drive ourselves to extinction coz we can't organise our own survival.

midsomermurderess · 11/02/2020 20:39

Opinion doesn't come in to it.

XingMing · 11/02/2020 20:40

Galileo proved the Earth's roundness in 1511 or thereabouts. It only feels flat.

TheFaerieQueene · 11/02/2020 20:41

Opinion on whether a proven fact is true or not is ridiculous. Anyone babbling pseudoscience in a vain attempt to try and disprove a proven fact is a fool or a charlatan.

Sparklesocks · 11/02/2020 20:41

Has it really come to this..

willloman · 11/02/2020 20:42

Doesn't matter what anyone does/doesn't believe: it's still gonna be round.

elfonshelf · 11/02/2020 20:42

Spend some time with Creationists - especially the Young Earth lot - and you will never be surprised again about how much nonsense some people can believe and worse, sound remarkably believable on.
