Here is the old thread:

Here is a twitter video from Wuhan I want to share because it so heartbreaking. People happily celebrating shortly before it became known that there was a virus outbreak. There already were some rumors but people didn’t believe them:
twitter.com/WLaowai8/status/1225637845508837377

@Yourtunbridgewells: The info you are sharing (472000 deaths in the UK) is very scary. Is this a worst case scenario.

@justdeckingthehalls: Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding writes that it is airborne on twitter: twitter.com/DrEricDing/status/1226236552059260928
N95 masks help against airborne transmission don’t they?

A friend just msgd me from Brighton. She works at a huge school. 8 of their students are 'known contacts' and there is a primary school across the road with many siblings at the secondary school. Parents caused a panic by picking up the primary kids early, they are firefighting.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/02/2020 18:40

A prison with 1000 prisoners? Shock Looks like Brighton man Super-Spreader has some competition.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/02/2020 18:55

This can’t be all down to one man.

Nurses 'including one who is pregnant are being forcibly held in quarantine after treating patient with new suspected case of coronavirus'

FourTeaFallOut · 11/02/2020 19:07

I hope they have some plans in place if they intend to quarantine people like this. What if the person that they've just locked down has children or family members who depend on them?

ofwarren · 11/02/2020 19:16

www.theargus.co.uk/news/18228018.amp/?__twitter_impression=true
4 doctors surgeries closed in Brighton now.
I read that 5 schools also have people who've been in contact and parents can withdraw their children.

GorkyMcPorky · 11/02/2020 19:17

Saw an article earlier reporting that 500 Wuhan medical staff are infected. Now that Helen Branswell has shared it, I tend to believe it.

GorkyMcPorky · 11/02/2020 19:24

That Mail article is grossly personal. Really snide tone, particularly about the doctor's 'well paid locum shifts'.

flower1994 · 11/02/2020 19:28

swine flu was also a pandemic - it was no more dangerous than normal flu unless you were immunocompromised (elderly, HIV etc.) this is a similar deal, most healthy people will be able to fight the virus. all people are seeing/hearing atm is about the Coronavirus and yes its unpleasant but realistically even if you did catch it, very unlikely to be killed or even hospitalised. of all the cases 82 percent are mild, 15 percent are moderate and 3 percent are critical. need to have a bit of perspective - this is coming from someone who lives within a few miles of Brighton

covetingthepreciousthings · 11/02/2020 19:30

Yes I wondered that, but also, say if you were in quarantine, would you still receive pay? If not, what if you then couldn't afford rent or bills? I think that's what would concern me if this becomes widespread.

ofwarren · 11/02/2020 19:36

Lots of us and our kids ARE immunocompromised flower Hmm

GorkyMcPorky · 11/02/2020 19:38

Weeeeell @flower1994, the WHO must be chatting shit when they call it a very grave threat to the world then.

Notstrongandstable · 11/02/2020 19:50

And now child number 2's school have self isolated case(s). Keeping both of them off from tomorrow and telling the secondary I was due to invigilator at tomorrow that I won't be coming in. It could all be nothing but I'm not willing to take the chance

ofwarren · 11/02/2020 19:53

Are you in Brighton not strong ? Keeping them out is for the best

Notstrongandstable · 11/02/2020 19:59

Yes I am in Brighton. I think most of the schools will be in the same situation by tomorrow

ofwarren · 11/02/2020 20:00

Hopefully it's all just precautionary and there are no more actual cases. You must be so worried though.

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2020 20:01

This can’t be all down to one man.

In 2003 the first super spreader was a fishmonger called Zhou Zuofen. He infected 30 doctors and nurses at the hospital he was admitted to.

One of these was a doctor called Dr Liu Jianlun. He travelled to Hong Kong where he stayed at the Metropolitan hotel. Here 23 other guests caught it. These included Johnny Chen, Kwan Sui-Chu, Esther Mok and another unnamed 27 year old man.

Johnny Chen travelled to Vietnam where he infected 38 members of staff including the SARS whistle-blower Carlo Urbani. (63 infected, 5 dead in Vietnam)

Kwan Sui-Chu travelled to Toronto and her son caught it from her. 251 people were eventually infected in two wave. The first was after her son caused an outbreak at the hospital he was staying at. The second was an accidental exposure amongst patients, visitors and staff at another hospital. (251 cases, 43 deaths in Canada)

Esther Mok and the unnamed 27 year old man were the cause of the outbreak in Singapore. (238 infected, 5 deaths in Singapore)

So in answer to your question can 1 man be the cause of...

... Yes they can.

eeeyoresmiles · 11/02/2020 20:05

www.newscientist.com/article/2233269-how-bad-is-the-covid-19-coronavirus-outbreak-likely-to-get/ - interesting article that also talks about the different age profiles of China vs over here.

NathanNathan · 11/02/2020 20:06

When people say "it's mainly affecting immune comprised people" I don't think they mean to be mean. I think they mean that fewer people will therefore be ill and the ones who are more susceptible are likely to be able to get better treatment. Because fewer people are ill.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/02/2020 20:11

I was pregnant during the swine flu outbreak and was really unconcerned with it. Wish I could be so relaxed now. I’m sure it’s these threads feeding my anxiety.

NemophilistRebel · 11/02/2020 20:15

The age theory would be well tested on The cruise ship too as the demographic of cruise goers is a much higher age than average population

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2020 20:28

But age matters. In China, 80 per cent of deaths have been in people aged over 60. While China has a median age of 37.4, the median age in the European Union, for example, is close to 43, meaning more residents may be vulnerable there.

Yes but this assumes that the general health of people in China is the same as in the European Union.

China's public health insurance generally only covers about half of medical costs, with the proportion lower for serious or chronic illnesses. Which diabetes and high blood pressure are. So these types of illnesses are not as well managed.

Healthcare across the EU is more or less universal. Western Europe (with the exception of Ireland, which has a particularly young population compared with other EU countries) all have better ranked health care systems. The problem is more in Eastern Europe where the population is older and healthcare systems are worse (which is down, largely to youth migration within the EU).

So there is a certain amount of swings and roundabouts going on with that one.

eeeyoresmiles · 11/02/2020 20:31

psandman.com/col/SARS-1.htm - very interesting article about risk communication - written during SARS but equally relevant now.

flower1994 · 11/02/2020 20:32

I'm not saying it's not a horrible virus - I said yes its unpleasant, all these kinds of things are. but it's not the first strain of coronavirus and it certainly wont be the last. scaring yourself silly isnt helpful without having a bit of perspective. usual hygiene practices that everyone should be following, especially this time of year, namely handwashing frequently and sneezing/coughing into elbow or a tissue you throw into the bin. this is standard for prevention of all respiratory illness' which is exactly what this is. I have a young baby too and I suffer with anxiety but I'm not worried about normal flu on this kind of level of hysteria - I'm not going to make myself feel sick in a country where we are so lucky we have the kind of healthcare we do and where they are equipped to handle things like this

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2020 20:33

Japan where those people are being treated, has a far higher standard of healthcare than China. They are also from all over the world (with different levels of healthcare in each country they come from), and are affluent. Affluence is generally associated with better overall health and health management.

So you are not comparing like for like because of the different factors involved.

A 60 year poor man from china getting care in an overwhelmed hospital in Wuhan is a very different prospect to a 60 year old affluent man from the UK getting care in a well staffed, well equiped hospital in Japan.
