Here is the old thread:

Here is a twitter video from Wuhan I want to share because it so heartbreaking. People happily celebrating shortly before it became known that there was a virus outbreak. There already were some rumors but people didn’t believe them:

@Yourtunbridgewells: The info you are sharing (472000 deaths in the UK) is very scary. Is this a worst case scenario.

@justdeckingthehalls: Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding writes that it is airborne on twitter: twitter.com/DrEricDing/status/1226236552059260928
N95 masks help against airborne transmission don’t they?

At this stage, is there any evidence that there's more than one serotype of COVID-19?

Evidence. No.

Rumours. Yes.
But nothing I'm taking even slightly seriously at this point.

meredithgrey1 · 16/02/2020 10:45

I think there will reach a point where testing is meaningless if the virus is in the general population.

Agreed, if it becomes really widespread and you have mild symptoms, it doesn't really matter what you have. Just take sensible precautions and keep a closer eye on how symptoms progress.

I'd be interested to know (but I'm sure we won't find out due to confidentiality) how many of the 8 recovered cases in the UK actually required hospital treatment, as opposed to needing to be hospitalised for isolation. If they didn't need isolating how many of them would've been just fine treating it at home. Obviously the Brighton man would have been, since he never had any symptoms.

Death in Taiwan

alreadytaken · 16/02/2020 11:13

I'm concerned - because OH is in a risk group and my junior doctor child could have to treat cases. However I am not joining the widespread panic because I'm not in China or a neighbouring country and so far the virus is being contained.

We wash hands often anyway but will use sanitiser if we have to use the tube - and possibly book a holiday as the panic means there are a lot of bargains around. Wont be visiting China, Hong Kong or anywhere nearby. Not bothering with masks but I may get some vitamin C.

(Reuters) - An American passenger from a cruise ship docked in Cambodia has tested positive for the new coronavirus a second time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia said on Sunday, after the cruise operator sought further tests

theres been a drop in new cases

Mittens030869 · 16/02/2020 15:33

@flower1994 Yes I heard that. It's what I thought would happen, as it's happened with previous pandemics. There's a period of panic, then things improve as governments and health professionals get a handle on the situation. Then eventually the panic dies down.

As people are mostly surviving now, i expect there will be a vaccination, which can be taken if there's a clear risk.

With the swine flu, by the time I caught it, the panic had died down. It was damned unpleasant (especially the first evening) but I wasn't afraid of death or having to go to hospital by then.

Coronavirus was scary initially, when no one had got better from it (like it was with Ebola a couple of years ago) but it sounds as if it's coming under control now, finally. (Although I will keep listening to the news, obviously we don't know how it will pan out yet.)

RedToothBrush · 16/02/2020 15:53

The Japanese health minister has errr... lived in Japan?

Right?

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/02/2020 16:14

There has been a lower number of cases officially reported for the past couple of days. But that's because a few days ago there was an enormous spike in cases.

Take some reassurance from the numbers if you wish but I'm not sure its warranted just yet.

yolofish · 16/02/2020 16:45

DD1 and I had swine flu at the same time. We spent 10 days together in my bed, both unable to move virtually. We were both relatively fit and healthy, think DD1 was about 12. It was really awful and I wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy. Took about 4 weeks afterwards to feel really well again.

NemophilistRebel · 16/02/2020 16:46

Some crazy fan fiction here if anyone wants to spare some time reading about how Coronavirus is made up to cover up for a vial of secret killer agent that was dropped in the wild animal market in Wuhan during a shoot out between an American spie and Chinese military - ufospotlight.wordpress.com/2020/02/13/chinese-intelligence-officer-reveals-true-magnitude-of-chinas-coronavirus-crisis/

Reuters reporting that the 61 year old man who died in Taiwan is a...

... Taxi driver....

VivaLeBeaver · 16/02/2020 17:30

I was just talking to one of my Chinese friends who us a lecturer at a U.K. university. One of her students came back from Whuhan recently via Beijing. Rang her and said he was feeling unwell and what should he do about group work, etc. She told him govt advice about self isolation for 14 days and not to worry about uni. He said ok. She told admin. Who rang her a few days later to say he’s back in lectures. He should still be in the 14 day self isolation period, but hasn’t sought medical attention and is walking around.

WaterSheep · 16/02/2020 17:33

VivaLeBeaver

Absolutely ridiculous, have admin reported the student?

disappointed101 · 16/02/2020 17:35

Great Beaver. I live v close to University accommodation. Could you say roughly where this is in the UK?

flower1994 · 16/02/2020 17:37

hasa - surely preferable to worry yourself silly over it

VivaLeBeaver · 16/02/2020 17:41

Absolutely ridiculous, have admin reported the student?

Not sure, I didn’t ask. Sounds like he’d been in lectures a week though before anyone realised he was signing in so it’s all a bit late to do anything now anyway. 🤷‍♀️

HeIenaDove · 16/02/2020 19:03

An article about the British couple on the cruise ship.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51519687

NoSharon · 16/02/2020 19:10

Aw Helena, I saw a couple of their check-ins with Sky News. They seemed upbeat. I'm guessing cabin fever has set in. Poor guy.

Parker231 · 16/02/2020 20:21

Why aren’t they being brought back home in the same way as other countries are looking after their citizens. They could go to Arrowe Park for quarantining.

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/02/2020 20:23

To be fair the British couple were told they could leave the ship and go into quarantine. They refused and decided to stay onboard.

RedToothBrush · 16/02/2020 21:30

Apparently the government are in discussions with the Japanese government about quarantining British from the cruise ship in Japan before they return. No decision yet though. Idea is that Japanese health care is as good as UK care thus its safe to do as no threat in Japan as there was with China with concerns about the extreme measures the Chinese government was taking.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/02/2020 22:19

I gather those passengers only want to be quarantined in an Anglosphere country
The English language has known powers against viruses

RhodaCamel · 17/02/2020 08:49

VivalaBeaver and disappointed101 this has been one of my fears, we live very near a U.K. university which has a large Chinese population. My mil travels into our local town via the university, she is unwell with a long term, terminal illness which will have lowered her immunity. My 14 year old son also regularly pops into a Subway which is near the uni accommodation, it really concerns me.
