Here is the old thread:

Here is a twitter video from Wuhan I want to share because it so heartbreaking. People happily celebrating shortly before it became known that there was a virus outbreak. There already were some rumors but people didn’t believe them:
twitter.com/WLaowai8/status/1225637845508837377

@Yourtunbridgewells: The info you are sharing (472000 deaths in the UK) is very scary. Is this a worst case scenario.

@justdeckingthehalls: Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding writes that it is airborne on twitter: twitter.com/DrEricDing/status/1226236552059260928
N95 masks help against airborne transmission don’t they?

Does anyone remember a TV drama feature from a few years back, I think it was about smallpox. Started off with one person infected and quickly spread all over the world.
Obvs that was fiction but the spread of COVID reminds me of this. The news that people are testing positive while asymptomatic is frightening. There's not much that any of us can do apart from maintaining good hygiene and possibly avoiding crowded places . Does anyone have any other useful suggestions?

Russellbrandshair · 15/02/2020 13:29

I can't see anything relevant on any of the three links...

That’s because there isn’t. It’s just fear monger if again

Russellbrandshair · 15/02/2020 13:29

Fearmongering

Russellbrandshair · 15/02/2020 13:34

Yes. Up your vitamin c. They were using intravenous vit c to treat corona victims in China. Plus vit c has been shown to aid recovery of pneumonia.

We are into the land of the unknowns here. We don't know the long term prognosis of those people who have recovered from COVID-19.

We do know that people with respiratory problems are more at risk to subsequent infections.

If you've got lung damage getting reinfected would be bad news.

We don't know if there is a mutation. It's possible. It's something scientists are worried about in case in becomes more viriluent.

I think the research I've seen suggested its genetic make up looked stable but there were concerns that just one mutation in one area of its code could be a problem.

I've seen the comments about this reinfection thing.

I'm slightly dubious about it being so early on tbh.

What I've seen about COVID-19 is that after two weeks people can show some improvement and then have a massive relapse when their immune system kicks in. This would be in keeping with the idea of 'reinfection' especially if reports of false negative testing is to be believed.

If you have a lot of patients if you show signs of recovery and there is pressure to discharge then you might get a pattern that looks like a 'reinfection'.

Too early to tell and speculation is really unhelpful on this. It just scares people as if it's not scary enough.

Forgetfebuary · 15/02/2020 13:37

Re '' more '' hygiene and better hand washing, I know people who are clean and neat freaks. Talking about cleaning and being neat makes up for 90% of their conversation.

They are paranoid about dust, cobwebs, germs, dirt etc. Their is tension if a crumb drops on table cloth or a used plate isn't instantly put in the dish washer.

However.... They see their owners bodily selves as germ free and happily feed children off their own cutlery even after or during illness.... Ie spoon feed saliva into small dc mouths. Hmm

So we haven't got a chance.

I think those people are often more worried about appearances and actual hygiene. Dust, cobwebs and dirt don't look good.

Jenasaurus · 15/02/2020 14:16

Some positive news, 8 out of the 9 UK infected have now recovered.

More information there, so that must reassure some of you :)

Russellbrandshair · 15/02/2020 14:28

The weird thing is- bleaching everything in sight is really bad for your immune system. I used to have a flat mate who was obsessed with cleanliness and bleached everything so much the kitchen surfaces became discoloured. I’ve never had so many colds and viral infections as I did when I lived with her.

IvyBush123 · 15/02/2020 14:36

I think here is what @Words was talking about. Does not seem to be a reliable source however twitter.com/Drapeta/status/1227780169861124098
Coronavirus might be more deadly if you already had it

OP posts:
woodchuck99 · 15/02/2020 14:39

That's great news. We seem to have a high proportion of recoveries now. Perhaps it's related to the fact that the main source of infection (Brighton man) did not have symptoms.

Russellbrandshair · 15/02/2020 14:53

I feel for the Brighton man. People call him the super spreader and imply this is all his fault but if he had NO symptoms how the fck was he to know?! It’s not like he was coughing up blood but still went to work sneezing over everyone

Ciwirocks · 15/02/2020 15:00

That’s reassuring that 8 out of the 9 have been discharged. Is it possible that those who have caught it in the centre of the outbreak might have a more severe disease and as it spreads it becomes milder? There have been a few reports of people getting better and then getting worse again, if these 9 were to become unwell again would they be contagious at that point or not at all because they test negative now?

Words · 15/02/2020 15:56

I've been watching Dr John Campbell on YouTube. He says it could possibly get weaker as time passes, but it could also get more virulent. We just don't know.

Words · 15/02/2020 16:36

For the avoidance of doubt, Dr John Campbell is a well regarded medical specialist, recommended on one of the previous threads.

His style is low key and Northern, and oddly compelling.

MissPoldark · 15/02/2020 16:39

I love his videos too, even started watching some on other topics Grin

Jenasaurus · 15/02/2020 17:08

Yes I agree MissPoldark I watch his videos on this subject too and find them really informative and balanced.

Albatross123 · 15/02/2020 17:24

I have read through the papers linked above and others and I think there may be some confusion re cytokine storms and re-infection. Some papers (not those recently linked above) refer to secondary infection - this is not the same as re-infection! Secondary infection refers to a bacterial infection secondary to the initial virus and may be the cause of a cytokine storm. PS I have a doctorate but I am not a medical doctor so this is just my interpretation.

HIVpos · 15/02/2020 17:42

@Russellbrandshair while your links were interesting regarding taking vitamin C I couldn’t see anything showing it is proven to be effective against COVID-19.

The first link shows that trials of this only started a few days ago and this is just one of many trials. I found this earlier showing what is being done so far in finding out what might help But this will take time. www.wired.com/story/china-launches-a-crush-of-clinical-trials-aimed-at-covid-19/

I’m a little wary of any articles written by columnists, especially when not written under their real name (Dr Gifford Jones aka Ken Walker) and also found references to less than reliable info given - google his name and anti vaxxer!

3rd article makes some very good points, including the fact that if we already have enough vit. C in our diets then there’s no benefit in taking supplements. However I will also say I’ve heard trusted HCPs say taking a high vit C supplement in advance can help prevent/reduce infection so who knows 🤷‍♀️
Vitamin C may have the potential to prevent and treat infections, but the impact of supplementation may differ according to baseline vitamin C deficiency status and other effect modifiers, such as other micronutrient deficiencies (Blumberg 2018; Smith 2017).

My view is follow any guidelines issued and eat well including following a healthy lifestyle - exercise etc. This is the best way we can help ourselves and our immune systems. If anyone hasn’t had their flu/pneumonia vaccine and should have got them, it would be a good idea to get this done.

RedToothBrush · 15/02/2020 17:59

Remember the ship that no one would let dock, and it swore blind that no one on board had coronavirus. They eventually all disembarked with no quarantine in Cambodia?

Well...

amp.scmp.com/news/asia/southeast-asia/article/3050814/coronavirus-us-passenger-westerdam-cruise-ship-infected?utm_content=article&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter&__twitter_impression=true
Coronavirus: US passenger from Westerdam cruise ship infected, Malaysia confirms
The 83-year-old woman flew to Malaysia with 144 fellow passengers after disembarking from the ship in Cambodia
The Westerdam had been stranded at sea for two weeks after being blocked by five nations over coronavirus fears, until Cambodia allowed it to dock

RedToothBrush · 15/02/2020 18:03

Apparently half the passengers have left the westerdam but half are now stuck on board for 14 days....

... Cos it all has gone so terribly well in Japan...

(all infected people in Japan were taken off and taken to hospital in Japan. Not sure the hospitals in Cambodia are quite at the same level).

eeeyoresmiles · 15/02/2020 18:04

What a nightmare - I bet the ones that did get off are relieved - presumably they can't put them back on!

FourTeaFallOut · 15/02/2020 18:07

Surely it must be bullshit that there is only one infected passenger?

I was watching John Campbell on YouTube yesterday who was saying about how fragile the health service is in Sihanoukville and he seemed surprised they were allowed to dock there.

yolofish · 15/02/2020 18:08

Good grief. The only thing worse than being stuck on a cruise ship (esp if an inside cabin with no windows/air) is probably being let off somewhere to spread your germs...

What a ludicrous decision.
