Here is the old thread:

Here is a twitter video from Wuhan I want to share because it so heartbreaking. People happily celebrating shortly before it became known that there was a virus outbreak. There already were some rumors but people didn’t believe them:
twitter.com/WLaowai8/status/1225637845508837377

@Yourtunbridgewells: The info you are sharing (472000 deaths in the UK) is very scary. Is this a worst case scenario.

@justdeckingthehalls: Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding writes that it is airborne on twitter: twitter.com/DrEricDing/status/1226236552059260928
N95 masks help against airborne transmission don’t they?

Are we sure she wasn't told to make her own way by 111? I've seen people say that's what happened. I don't know how true that is though.

She didn't ring 111. She just got an uber and presented herself unannounced at A&E. The hospital and public health England have confirmed this.

I think that if people phone 111 they are advised to drive themselves to hospital if they can or call an ambulance but they wait outside the hospital and are then taken to an isolation unit to be tested. No one else has gone to A&E.

Jenasaurus · 14/02/2020 09:49

Surely if they told her to make her own way to hospital when she told them her symptoms and that she had just come back from China, it is 111 that is in the wrong, and it is confusing as to why some get ambulance with the full protective gear and she got told to make her own way. There are so many conflicting stories its hard to make sense of it

WaterSheep · 14/02/2020 09:49

I've seen sources that say 111 say you can make your way there via a personal vehicle, but they wouldn't suggest a taxi or other form of public transport.

Jenasaurus · 14/02/2020 09:51

Sorry, cross posted woodchuck

She didn't ring 111. That's the whole point. Despite all the leaflets at the airport and problem in the conference telling her to ring 111 if she had symptoms she decided to ignore it and just get an uber to A&E

LoveNote · 14/02/2020 09:53

taxi driver friend here says their firm will cease all hospital trips once/if the virus starts to hit the uk harder. they are a largish local company so will be difficult for many to get to hospital. not sure of a solution

they won't risk it

ofwarren · 14/02/2020 09:55

Ah right woodchuck that's really bad then

LittleSwede · 14/02/2020 09:55

The person at the conference was a different one to the Uber one.

That could be a problem for me. Perhaps the solution would be to let people book a taxi in advance still. Then people who have appointments for other things can still get there. I suppose people who need to get to A&E for other reasons will have to rely on friends/family.

WaterSheep · 14/02/2020 10:05

The person at the conference was a different one to the Uber one.

I thought they were the same person

A woman infected with coronavirus attended a bus conference in London that had more than 250 delegates... Less than three days after the conference the woman, a Chinese national, fell ill and took an Uber to University Hospital Lewisham.

halcyondays · 14/02/2020 10:15

I heard that she did ring 111 before getting the Uber. Don’t know what advice was given. I’m not convinced about the low risk the journey was less than 15 minutes thing.

Unfortunately people can’t be relied on to follow NHS guidance, e.g the 48 hour rule for vomiting and diarrhoea, so it will be no different with this.

lintrollerseverywhere · 14/02/2020 10:34

I live in Lewisham - that hospital is about a ten minute walk from me. I'm not particularly worried.

I have a close relative who is severely immuno compromised who is likely to be in serious trouble if he gets it, but I am no more worried about him than I usually am. The sad fact of the matter is that most routine illnesses could prove fatal for him, and there's nothing that can be done about that.

RedToothBrush · 14/02/2020 11:35

New case in Japan:

In Okinawa, a female taxi driver was confirmed to have been infected with the novel coronavirus on Friday, the first patient in the Kyushu-Okinawa area.

Thats the second taxi driver there. Poor old UK Uber driver was told he was low risk cos he was in the taxi with case #9 for less than 15 mins.

This seems ridiculous tbh.

LittleSwede · 14/02/2020 11:36

The FT wrote that the conference was last week and not connected to the individual taking an Uber. Tried to link but failed. The Chinese lady who took the Uber Aldi flew into the UK on Saturday so wasn't here during the conference.

LittleSwede · 14/02/2020 11:36

Random Aldi in there! 😄

I know people who go to the doctors for farts that smell bad.

The ridiculous reasons they have been to a and e for just boil my blood.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 14/02/2020 11:41

Apparently suspected case on flight to Heathrow from US

www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1242264/coronavirus-outbreak-news-heathrow-airport-united-airlines-flight-901-san-francisco

We’re being held on the plane as there are seven other flights with suspected cases on board.”

No quarrantine - just fill in a form and get on with life. Clearly PHE have given up trying to contain this anymore.

lintrollerseverywhere · 14/02/2020 11:43

I know people who go to the doctors for farts that smell bad.

Well actually that can be a red flag for bowel cancer, so that is what they ought to be doing.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 14/02/2020 11:47

"We’re being held on the plane as there are seven other flights with suspected cases on board."

Now that definitely reminds me of Station Eleven. (Anxious people who haven't read it, shouldn't read it at the moment! Even though it is a beautifully written book, it's a bit too close to home atm)

RedToothBrush · 14/02/2020 11:54

Well actually that can be a red flag for bowel cancer, so that is what they ought to be doing.

No they shouldn't. Not if they have just read it on the Internet and think they should have perfumed farts not normal farts. Does 111 tell you to go to the GP if you fart?

Should all just go to the doctor if we fart?

No. Its only a red flag if you have other symptoms.

RedToothBrush · 14/02/2020 11:54

And we wonder why no one can get a go appointment...

BatSegundo · 14/02/2020 11:55

Just caught up and noticed more and more 'I read that.../I heard that...' appearing on the thread. Totally not a criticism of individual posters but with our sources as Twitter and Reddit and newspapers/news channels which are either behind the curve (looking at you BBC) or making errors (the i on the prisoners), it's no wonder that we're getting conflicting information. The silence from government is pretty deafening at this point and I really think they need to start communicating.

www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/02/14/national/wakayama-positive-coronavirus/#.XkaK1mSnyyU

Elsewhere, Wakayama Prefecture officials made public Friday morning that a man in his 70s was confirmed to have the coronavirus and is in serious condition. He was first admitted to the town of Yuasa’s Saiseikai Arida Hospital, where a doctor in his 50s was confirmed to be infected with the virus on Thursday.

It was not clear whether the man in his 70s, who first showed symptoms on Feb. 1 and checked into the hospital on Feb. 6, had gone overseas before getting sick. He has since been transferred to a different hospital.

Wakayama Gov. Yoshinobu Nisaka rejected the possibility that he got infected in the hospital, noting that the man never had close contact with the doctor, and that the doctor was not working there when the man was hospitalized. Nisaka said he likely picked up the virus before visiting the hospital.

Nothing to worry about here... No....

Ciwirocks · 14/02/2020 12:01

To be fair I would prefer the delayed but accurate reporting from the bbc (one of the reasons their reports are delayed is to verify and avoid false news) than the reports in my local paper along the lines of ‘Barbara said that her friends neighbour saw a man get taken away by someone in a hazmat suit’ 🙄

Mittens030869 · 14/02/2020 12:06

The panic needs to stop, and we should all just follow NHS guidelines for deal with this virus. We've had it with bird flu, swine flu and back in the 1990s and early naughties, it was vCJD. None of those scares lived up to the dire predictions. Only time will tell.

I'm saying this, because my DDs (10 and 7) were really scared earlier in the week, and I had to reassure them that people in this country have been getting better, and there's no suggestion that come to Leeds where we live.

Panicking and fretting about it won't help protect you from catching it. Careful hygiene and avoiding sick people will
