Here is the old thread:

Here is a twitter video from Wuhan I want to share because it so heartbreaking. People happily celebrating shortly before it became known that there was a virus outbreak. There already were some rumors but people didn’t believe them:
twitter.com/WLaowai8/status/1225637845508837377

@Yourtunbridgewells: The info you are sharing (472000 deaths in the UK) is very scary. Is this a worst case scenario.

@justdeckingthehalls: Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding writes that it is airborne on twitter: twitter.com/DrEricDing/status/1226236552059260928
N95 masks help against airborne transmission don’t they?

We also received a talk about Corona virus which was supposed to be reassuring but did the opposite if I'm honest.

Floraflower3 If you can share, I would be interested to know what was sad that made you more anxious.

WaterSheep · 14/02/2020 07:15

said not sad.

I'd love an edit button.

Forgetfebuary · 14/02/2020 07:34

Any bug gets amplified at disney, norivus etc. When that took off, people were puking in the park.
The buffet food everywhere, poor hygiene and cleaning, the meeting melting pot from people visiting from all over the world...

GothMummy · 14/02/2020 07:37

I feel so sorry for the uber driver who now has no income for 2 weeks.

ofwarren · 14/02/2020 07:50

I absolutely love Disney but as a pp says, it's a germ pit.
So many buffet foods and things that you touch that will never be sanitised.
I personally wouldn't go right now.

HRH2020 · 14/02/2020 07:51

Telegraph is reporting that one of the confirmed 9 attended a conference in central london last week attended by 250 people.

WaterSheep · 14/02/2020 07:56

HRH2020 If true then that could amplify the spread of the virus, as it's likely that a lot of those attending will be from other areas.

Aureum · 14/02/2020 08:08

Apparently the driver has not been quarantined because he wasn’t in sufficiently close contact with the patient to be at risk. So a 15 minute car ride isn’t close contact?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 14/02/2020 08:09

The person who attended the Westminster conference was the Uber lady.

Morally she's been selfish with the Uber. Question if she was feeling unwell at the conference.

However, what's the legal position of going around and knowingly infecting people with something like this? (Not saying she did but in general)

VivaLeBeaver · 14/02/2020 08:10

So a friend of mine came back from Singapore 2 weeks ago and was poorly with flu type symptoms. Temp, sore throat, cough, etc. At the time the advice was only about whuhan and China for self isolation so she didn't. I saw her and then became poorly, felt awful for a few days and now 90% recovered. But I don't reach the criteria for self isolation as I haven't travelled anywhere. By the time the talk about Singapore came I'd already felt a bit better, gone back to work on public transport. And I'm sure I won't be the only one with a similar story. There's potentially a lot of people in the UK with no symptoms or mild symptoms walking around with it.

HasaDigaEebowai · 14/02/2020 08:10

It was the chinese woman London case. Sky news reporting. Those attending have been sent information about isolating.

WaterSheep · 14/02/2020 08:10

Aureum

Where did you read that?

It's quite a sobering thought if true. Shock

HasaDigaEebowai · 14/02/2020 08:13

That was the information circulating yesterday. Likewise the information seemed to be that only those within two rows of the uber woman on her flight have been contacted. Presumably she was going to the loo, touching things as she walked around on the flight etc.

It seems like the strategies for dealing with this are all over the place. There may well be a coordinated plan at the top but its not filtering down to those dealing with it on the ground.

ofwarren · 14/02/2020 08:14

I read that the driver hasn't been quarantined but Uber have removed his account for 2 weeks

WaterSheep · 14/02/2020 08:19

Agreed. It's quite worrying that the information seems so hit and miss, with regards to who should be self isolating, and who is being contacted as someone who has been in close contact with a confirmed case.

I understand the risks are probably small. But given they have no way of knowing the health of those who could have been in contact with these cases, or the health of those they may then be in contact with. Each case needs to be taken seriously so people can make informed decisions.

Floraflower3 · 14/02/2020 08:23

WaterSheep what worries me is contagious this virus seems to be and the fact it's new so we still don't fully understand it. The more times the virus gets transmitted, the more chances there are for mutations to happen which could make it more dangerous. Also if it reaches areas with underdeveloped healthcare systems we could be in real trouble. Older men with comorbidities seem to be the worst affected but most of us know someone that fits that criteria and it hit close to home the fact that someone with confirmed Corona virus came to the hospital.

PumpkinPieAlibi the first x ray was on around day 8 I believe and there was a fair amount of opacity on both lungs (bilateral consolidation) on the 11th day the majority of the lungs were opaque, I've never seen a pneumonia xray look that bad before.

Floraflower3 · 14/02/2020 08:26

covetingthepreciousthings for the majority of people it does seem to be a mild illness, however those that end up with a severe illness can end up being very very ill and I worry about being one of the unlucky ones that ends up with severe pneumonia or passing it to a loved one.

copperstrike76 · 14/02/2020 08:36

@YoursTunbridgeWells

Two years ago Daryl Rowe was convicted of deliberately infecting people with HIV. He is in prison now, I think. That case is probably a little different as he targeted people and then taunted them, but it sounds as though this woman has just been mindlessly stupid and selfish. That is the worry with this virus - because even with the best efforts of the authorities to contain it (and ours have been a little inconsistent anyway, I think), you are still relying on infected people, especially if they have relatively mild cases, to not be dicks and to think of others. It's just like those people who send their kids to school with no regard for the 48-hr rule and it is people like that who will spread the virus. Will be interesting to see what happens with this woman, especially compared to Steve Walsh, who by all accounts did the right thing and did his very best not to infect others when he knew he had been exposed. And yet he still unknowingly infected quite a few others.

GorkyMcPorky · 14/02/2020 08:38

I read the Uber has suspended the taxi driver's account. That should not be allowed. I fear for people on shitty zero hours contracts - my DF works for a Chinese-owned company who are now issuing one month rather than three month contracts.

Notstrongandstable · 14/02/2020 08:38

The self isolation thing is weird...re Uber driver, people on her flight etc.
Just an update from the Brighton school self isolation cases at our schools(2)..one was a staff member whose partner had been to one of the affected go surgeries, other was 2 students who had had contact with a person who had contact with possible case. I was reassured enough to send my kids back in yesterday as I felt the risk was low enough and it's going to be hanging around for a while anyway.
So from my POV I was reassured PHE we're doing a thorough job with tracing and advice for potential contact cases....obviously not so much in the case of London lady though

GatoFofo · 14/02/2020 09:26

Re the Uber driver, haven’t there been at least 2 cases (1 in Thailand and 1 in Japan) where taxi drivers have been infected when they have had an infected passenger?
I’d have thought that the Uber driver should have been told to self isolate.

I agree with VivaLaBeaver though, there are probably many cases already in the UK.
I am just turning the corner after an awful few days of fever, cough, wheezing & headache. Having never had a chest infection before but this happening now, it’s got me questioning how on earth we’d know if it’s in the community if testing is only being carried out on specified returners to the UK with symptoms?

woodchuck99 · 14/02/2020 09:31

Self isolation criteria is a bit weird but I suppose they are going on infection with other viruses. They have to be quite pragmatic about it. I'm more irritated about the fact that flights are still coming in from China and that there are still international conferences in the UK where hundreds of people can get infected and then carry the infection to other parts of the country. I noted that in Barcelona they cancelled a conference because so many people including Amazon, BT pulled out and wonder why more companies aren't doing the same thing.

woodchuck99 · 14/02/2020 09:34

The woman who got an Uber to A&E is incredibly selfish. If people become infected as a result she will know about it and it will do nothing to help the racism towards Chinese people at the moment. I also feel sorry for the Uber driver if he has had his account suspended for two weeks. They could easily afford to compensate him and it's disgusting that they aren't. I think people should boycott Uber.

ofwarren · 14/02/2020 09:35

Are we sure she wasn't told to make her own way by 111? I've seen people say that's what happened. I don't know how true that is though.
