Here is the old thread:

Here is a twitter video from Wuhan I want to share because it so heartbreaking. People happily celebrating shortly before it became known that there was a virus outbreak. There already were some rumors but people didn’t believe them:

@Yourtunbridgewells: The info you are sharing (472000 deaths in the UK) is very scary. Is this a worst case scenario.

@justdeckingthehalls: Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding writes that it is airborne on twitter: twitter.com/DrEricDing/status/1226236552059260928
N95 masks help against airborne transmission don’t they?

YY to some people not following the news. I actually know someone who was completely unaware that Brexit was happening.. "what's going on with that, are we going to leave then??" .. on Brexit day..

NaturalBornWoman · 12/02/2020 10:23

So this prisoner has been in the country for more that 14 days and there have been no reported cases amongst the prison population in Thailand allegedly. 🤔

Watersheep. Well yes it is worrying.

The UK mustn't be testing people unless they reach certain criteria such as the Brighton guy having been in contact with a confirmed case. It was very organised that he was told that!

Just coming from Thailand and feeling fluey must not rate a test. 🤔

Reading the wording of the latest advice, there seems to be a significant difference between "quarantine" and "isolation". I wonder if we will stop using them so interchangeably in future as they may come to mean different things.

Eg - if you don't self quarantine, you are risking enforced isolation and we all know how well that goes at secondary schools who think this is a brilliant method of discipline

lemonjumper · 12/02/2020 10:35

Isolation separates sick people with a contagious disease from people who are not sick.

Quarantine separates and restricts the movement of people who were exposed to a contagious disease to see if they become sick.

www.cdc.gov/quarantine/index.html

lemonjumper · 12/02/2020 10:40

I think in some articles, the terms are used interchangeably, even though they actually mean different things.

The message I think is that if you don't self quarantine when required, you may be forcibly quarantined.

yolofish · 12/02/2020 10:42

NoSharon keeping cells locked down is going to make an already volatile prison population even more so... I cant see this going well.

ofwarren · 12/02/2020 10:44

Definitely yolo they aren't going to be happy. It's not exactly the lap of luxury locked in your cell for 2 weeks.

WaterSheep · 12/02/2020 10:59

An A&E worker who tested positive for coronavirus treated patients for two days before being diagnosed, according to a memo sent to hospital staff... The healthcare worker treated “a small number of patients” on February 4 and 5th

I was in A+E recently. Thinking back to the amount of people who were there at the same time as me; 100s in just a few hours, I can't see how the worker could only have treated a small number of patients over the course of 2 days. Confused

ofwarren · 12/02/2020 11:02

I know water all A&Es are busy.

NcFortuna · 12/02/2020 11:04

Is the A&E worker at Worthing Hospital connected to the Brighton Super Spreader cluster? Or is he/she an isolated infection?

NaturalBornWoman · 12/02/2020 11:08

Agree, no doctor would only see a few patients over 2 days. The tracing process seems to have been slow. I read yesterday that Steve from Brighton’s company knew on 27th Jan that there had been a case at the Singapore conference and that they told employees to wfh. How then can known associates have been working in healthcare facilities a week later? I think we need to do much better or we are fucked.

Babyroobs · 12/02/2020 11:11

I don't understand why the government isn't advising people to wear face masks. I know they can't 100% protect people but would surely help. There seems to be very little guidance from the government.

NoSharon · 12/02/2020 11:14

I know! Law abiding though I am, I think if I was on lockdown for 2 weeks, I might very well go mad!

The English couple isolated on the cruise ship are very upbeat. I'd be climbing the walls!

NemophilistRebel · 12/02/2020 11:18

thanks for something more balanced @SummerHouse

Nanalisa60 · 12/02/2020 11:22

No I’m not!! I’m a great believer in when it’s your time to go then it’s your time to go!!

I have enough to worry about just living, then to start to worry if I’m going to die from yet another Virus!!

So I will just leave it in the hands of the gods!! And get on with the living!!

PuzzledObserver · 12/02/2020 11:28

I don't understand why the government isn't advising people to wear face masks. I know they can't 100% protect people but would surely help.

They help a little when worn by people who are ill with the virus, but make virtually no difference to your chances of catching it if you wear one.

There seems to be very little guidance from the government.

Here you go:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/wuhan-novel-coronavirus/

www.gov.uk/guidance/wuhan-novel-coronavirus-information-for-the-public

I’m pretty sure I saw a full page advert in a paper yesterday. Something we can all do is to get in the habit of washing our hands more frequently. The BBC rebroadcast a programme last night showing research and modelling into a future flu pandemic. Their data showed that if everyone - EVERYONE - washed their hands more frequently, the rate of spread of the infection was greatly slowed down (which would give the NHS more chance of coping with the severe cases) and the total number infected would be reduced by a quarter.

Wash your hands!

NaturalBornWoman · 12/02/2020 11:30

So I will just leave it in the hands of the gods!! And get on with the living!!

I hope you’ll be washing your hands and showing at least a modicum of respect for WHO and PHE advice, whilst getting on with living. !!!!

notimagain · 12/02/2020 11:34

Self Quarantine if coming from China, Singapore, Thailand would be better. Although I don't think that's the official advice at this point.

Given the impact that would have on thousands/tens of thousands of employees in certain industries, and just as importantly the consequences for their families I don' think that's something PHE are going to recommend unless and until the evidence supports it.

SummerHouse · 12/02/2020 11:35

Here here! I totally agree. Wash your hands! And check your children are washing their hands. Properly. My 7 yr old was caught sprinkling water on his fingertips yesterday and got a back to basics lesson. Good, practical, measured, sensible, helpful post there @PuzzledObserver

NaturalBornWoman · 12/02/2020 11:38

@notimagain the evidence is pointing very strongly to it spreading prior to symptoms, so by the time someone shows symptoms and presents themselves for testing they have potentially been at large in the community for 2 weeks. As seen in Brighton. Without more draconian measures I don’t see how this can be contained.

FelicityFebruary · 12/02/2020 11:41

Notimagain my partner's work have said this for China and Singapore (maybe more places now) work remotely and don't come in for 2 weeks.

FelicityFebruary · 12/02/2020 11:43

The gods help those who wash their hands!
