This girl can advert. Tampon string

Why does this advert show a close up of a woman's bottom getting ready with a tampon string hanging out? I don't get it, is it supposed to be empowering?

It's interesting that people are accusing others of being offended by a tampon string and then hysterically saying that they can't possibly read any more comments by the people they believe are offended. And then telling them to grow up. That's really going to engage people with your point of view, isn't it?

I'm not offended by it. I just don't see the point, and that's OK; I'm not going to change my mind because you disagree with me. The current music isn't to my taste but I loved the Missy Elliot one. Wouldn't it be dull if we all liked the same stuff or felt the same way about everything?

Maybe have a look at their website, what they do and whether they achieved/accomplished anything before commenting?

lilgreen · 10/02/2020 16:41

Yep @SoupDragon I said that too. I think it’s great to address periods but who wants to see the string up close? Do you want to see a bit loo roll in use?? I think not.

Will that explain what the visual of an incorrectly inserted tampon is meant to convey?

lazylinguist · 10/02/2020 16:43

I don't really understand who it's aimed at. Women and girls know that women and girls have periods. They know that tampons have strings (which have no reason to hang outside their knickers Hmm). They know that they can do stuff like sport while they have their period if they want to and don't feel too crappy. Periods are normal for us - so how is seeing a tampon string normalising anything?

StrangeLookingParasite · 10/02/2020 16:47

Love everything about the ad apart from the word 'girl'. It's patronising - imagine a campaign for men called 'this boy can'

I think the target demographic is early to late teens, when a lot of girls stop doing sport.

JacquesHammer · 10/02/2020 16:51

Quite a number of teen girls genuinely don’t in my experience.

PanicAndRun · 10/02/2020 17:14

Nope, unless they'll release a statement at some point. But it might stop sneery comments like "woke", "patronising", "there's no need for this","box ticking exercise", "thought by a man" etc. They are actually having an impact on women and girls being into sport/exercising . It's working. They're doing a good thing.

As to why the string? I honestly don't know why. Maybe the woman suggested it herself from previous experiences, maybe it's to combat the portrayal on SM of tampons either as a disturbing sexual fetish or the picture with the strings hanging out as a fail/disgusting. The only thing wrong with it is that if it were to happen it would be hanging between the legs ,normally seen from the front. Can you imagine the outrage if they actually showed that?

Just because you've never experienced a hanging string doesn't mean no other girl or woman did,or worried about it, or was shamed for it.

ragged · 10/02/2020 20:58

Are you lot sure about the lack of strings hanging out?
I mean, have you truly that closely inspected all the bottoms in the changing room at every opportunity?

(ooh, yick...)

looselegs · 10/02/2020 21:02

Never even noticed it!

SaltedPretzel · 11/02/2020 06:34

I'm all for female empowerment but don't need to see a tampon string hanging out of someone's shorts thank you very much.

OnABeachSomewhere · 13/02/2020 09:43

Awareness is good of course, but what exactly does the ad make people aware of, if they weren't already? At least get it right and put the string away. Are there going to be any ads of men with underwear fails such as loo roll hanging out?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 13/02/2020 09:56

YANBU - for something that's meant to be empowering I find the tampon string degrading as well as misleading.

SoupDragon · 13/02/2020 10:58

Are you lot sure about the lack of strings hanging out?

I've used a lot of tampons during my 30 odd years of periods and, if used properly, none have had a long enough string to hang out of my knickers.

AlwaysInTroubleAgain · 05/03/2020 21:50

There is something wrong with me. Every time I see it I find it incredibly sexy and arousing.

This was a ‘thing’ being shared a lot years ago...
