This girl can advert. Tampon string

Why does this advert show a close up of a woman's bottom getting ready with a tampon string hanging out? I don't get it, is it supposed to be empowering?

OP posts:

How long is that tampon string??? Doesn’t bother me... it’s all about ‘real’ women and real women use tampons...

Happygirl79 · 09/02/2020 20:18

Hi saraclara
You're right!
I missed the whole intention of the ad completely

saraclara · 09/02/2020 20:19

No problem @Happygirl79! I'm glad you're on board now Smile

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/02/2020 20:21

I love these ads, and think normalising periods is great.

dayowl · 09/02/2020 20:21

I love this advert

GinTonic · 09/02/2020 20:21

I liked it, I liked how it showed the woman handing the baby to the man to go out and do sport and I agree the brief flash of tampon string was normalising periods.

MimiLaRue · 09/02/2020 20:21

The advert is working- we are all talking about it! Grin

ExcessiveAdmin · 09/02/2020 20:22

The tampon string doesn’t bother me, but the term girl does. I’m not sure why, but it irks. I suppose woman doesn’t sound as snappy.

Rumboogie · 09/02/2020 20:25

I think it's tacky and unnecessary. I get the thing about sport, but there is such a thing as personal dignity. Some things, though quite normal, are just private, imo.

Meirou90 · 09/02/2020 20:27

It’s fucking stupid

Purplecatshopaholic · 09/02/2020 20:28

All for encouraging sport, but the tampon string spoils the ad I think. Patronising (imo). Don’t like the bloomin ‘music’ either...

MitziK · 09/02/2020 20:29

Just waiting for the first 'Oh! Is my tampon string showing?' SM posts...

MunaZaldrizoti · 09/02/2020 20:30

The ads are so positive. I love them. I'm not shocked or hate the tampon string because it's fucking 2020, if we cannot normalise menstruation by now what the fuck are we doing?

countbackfromten · 09/02/2020 20:31

I think it is fantastic. Periods are normal, a part of life for many of us and it is about time we stopped shrouding them and the resultant products and pain and diarrhoea and desire to exercise or not exercise in mystery or an “ick” factor and instead recognised they are normal. The book Period by Emma Barnett is a fantastic eye opening read.

The woman in the advert - Hannah - has spoken about this and definitely worth reading www.google.co.uk/amp/s/metro.co.uk/2020/01/15/im-proud-show-tampon-string-girl-can-shouldnt-taboo-12061161/amp/

It probably irks because you know that there'd never be a campaign aimed at men called 'This boy can'.

lilgreen · 09/02/2020 20:32

I know what you mean op. I like the ad and it’s message overall but I think it crosses a boundary with that shot. They could show a woman grabbing a tampon when packing her gym bag for example.

chuck7 · 09/02/2020 20:33

What don’t get you get? Unfortunately teenage girls up and down the country back out of exercise and swimming because their period embarrasses them and they think they can’t do both.

Why do you have a problem with it? It’s just a string Hmm

Gottheteeshirtandlostit · 09/02/2020 20:34

Love that ad. Anything that cuts through the barriers to women exercising and participating in sport is brilliant.

user18463585026 · 09/02/2020 20:34

What is the point of the advert? I don't want to wear skimpy, skin right outfits in public and have people ogle me the way those cameras do. These adverts just make me uncomfortable and remind me of all the reasons I can't cope with the situations they depict (PTSD).

What do the adverts do to change the reasons women can't access sport?

Funkycats · 09/02/2020 20:35

Yeah, I've never had or seen anyone with a tampon string hanging out. Picking up a tampon would have worked just as well I think. Struck me as a bit odd.

TitianaTitsling · 09/02/2020 20:36

Exactly chuck it's just a string!

lilgreen · 09/02/2020 20:37

Apart from the string shot I find them really empowering. I have teenage DDs and they can feel really self conscious about getting out and exercising. I love the way the ad shows real , non airbrushed women just doing it.

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 09/02/2020 20:37

I actually really dislike the ad, quite aside from the tampon string.

It just makes me think of a bunch of ad execs saying 'do we have a fat girl? A black woman? A disabled woman. Someone with freckles? A lesbian looking one?' etc. I find it patronising.

Acrasia · 09/02/2020 20:38

Surely it would make more sense for it to be sanitary pad wings because they actually do show on the outside of your knickers?

maddiemookins16mum · 09/02/2020 20:40

Quite prepared to be called old fashioned but there’s no need to see it, it adds nothing to the advert.
Whatever next, seeing someone insert one?
