Why does this advert show a close up of a woman's bottom getting ready with a tampon string hanging out? I don't get it, is it supposed to be empowering?

OP posts:

I literally cried with happiness when I saw that string. I thought it was really incredible to address some of the realities of women's lives. I've grown up with period ads using blue 'blood' and then finally here's one acknowledging some reality. I was genuinely moved by it.

But then, I was on my period.

Funkycats · 09/02/2020 20:41

@Acrasia yes I agree. Since when did tampon string hang outside knickers?

Cakemonger · 09/02/2020 20:41

Love everything about the ad apart from the word 'girl'. It's patronising - imagine a campaign for men called 'this boy can' Hmm

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 09/02/2020 20:42

MitziK 'The tampon string challenge' or suchlike. Yeurch.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/02/2020 20:43

I think it’s great

Showing the reality, woman in bed in pain, a woman exercising when on her period

None of this fluffy we look so happy and delighted to be on our periods that we giggle for no reason nonsense

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/02/2020 20:43

Yes I prefer they didn’t use girl ...

Alaimo · 09/02/2020 20:43

I like the ad. I think in an earlier shot a woman (same one?) is seen in bed with bad stomach cramps. I thought that was a really nice way of showing that having your period doesn't have to stop you from doing sports, but it's also okay if on other days you just want to stay in bed. Not a fan of the term girl, but apart from that I think it's a really great ad, truly trying to show that sports is something for everyone.

TwitcherOfCurtains · 09/02/2020 20:44

I'd like to see an advert that normalises body hair (any of the women in that advert show any?) and non wearing of makeup (most of them in that advert appeared to have makeup on). I'd also like not to be referred to as a girl.

Yup.

WorraLiberty · 09/02/2020 20:44

I literally cried with happiness when I saw that string.

What? Actually literally?

thenightsky · 09/02/2020 20:45

It just makes me think of a bunch of ad execs saying 'do we have a fat girl? A black woman? A disabled woman. Someone with freckles? A lesbian looking one?' etc. I find it patronising.

^^THIS

And wish strings really did hang down like that. I might be able to find the bastard, instead of having to dig around in folds of flesh to no avail and end up bending double to see if I can spy a flash of blue in there.

Careersytype · 09/02/2020 20:45

I love all the different situations, different bodies... the tampon string IS contrived though.
Yes, periods are normal, tampons are normal- a string hanging 3 inches down a woman's ass isn't.

lottiegarbanzo · 09/02/2020 20:46

I've read a thread on here where the adult OP actually thought it was impossible to go swimming when on your period and was clearly shocked and astounded to read that many other women don't see it as any sort of barrier at all. (How she thought competitive athletes functioned was not clear).

What seems trite and attention-seeking to some people is, still, ground-breakingly informative and empowering to others.

madcatladyforever · 09/02/2020 20:47

I can't see how this is empowering.
Is there anything that the isn't empowering now?
We've all just dealt with periods without fuss forever. It is zero big deal.
I'd like of see someone coping with a colostomy or incontinence in this situation. That would be much more useful.

lilgreen · 09/02/2020 20:47

What can you say instead of girl ? You can substitute man for guy or bloke but there isn’t really an alternative for woman is there?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 09/02/2020 20:47

user I have awful memories of sports at school, being fat and mocked by the teachers and picked last for teams. But the point of the ads is to show real women doing real exercise, looking a bit sweaty and tired, not being glamorous or aspirationally dressed, but inspirational. The point is that unfiltered images of women might make you think, she looks a bit like me, and if she can do that and not give a shit that she's sweating/a bit fat/on her period, then so can I. I understand what you mean about bringing back unwelcome memories, but really the ads are well conceived and make their point clearly.

Wtf is wrong with "This woman can"?

PityParty4one · 09/02/2020 20:50

See everyone knows what Viagra is.

It was on the daily news lose women this morning all the papers.
Jokes an comedy sketches have been made about Viagra.
It's been around less than 20 years but it exists in popular culture.

Periods. Existed as long as women have.
But you show a tampon string In 2020 and people lose their minds...

user100987 · 09/02/2020 20:52

I saw it in the gym yesterday and thought it was great.

lilgreen · 09/02/2020 20:52

@TwitcherOfCurtains not sure why you needed ‘wtf’ in there but I guess woman it sounds more formal and doesn’t suit the style of ad.

PanicAndRun · 09/02/2020 20:52

Maybe it's a reaction to the numerous tampon string memes that either class them as fails /disgusting or seriously disturbing sexual fetishes and the pictures being circulated/ of girls/women with it showing for the world to laugh at.
Because this shit happens. Because girls/women can be worried/paranoid about it. Because people are dicks when it comes to periods. Because a lot of those memes are associated with swimming.

It's a tampon string , not bowel surgery live.

lilgreen · 09/02/2020 20:53

Then again I’m not in the least bit offended by the word ‘girl’.

dementedma · 09/02/2020 20:54

Never mind the tampon, the "music" makes my ears bleed. I think i caught the words "habit" and "rabbit" but fuck knows what the rest of it was.

Whatnowagnes · 09/02/2020 20:54

I love it. Empowering and well thought through.

Dragonembroidery · 09/02/2020 20:55

I don't like it at all. Not good, patronising and insulting.
