Hairdresser ruined my jumper

BleachedJumper · 05/02/2020 10:23

As the thread title really, had a full head of foils at the hairdressers and I’ve discovered that the back of my jumper has a rather large bleach stain at the neckline the following day when I’ve picked it up to put in the washing. What’s annoyed me more is at the end of the haircut, the hairdresser said ‘oh x has wet your jumper too!’ And stood blow drying the back for a minute or so. No mention of bleach damage.

It’s a brand new jumper that I bought last week, not particularly expensive just annoying, particularly when I know think when was aware of it at the time and didn’t comment. What should I do?

I think you need to see it as a lesson learnt personally

flowery · 05/02/2020 11:50

”If bleach is being used on your hair there's a good chance it will get on your clothes“

I think you need a new hairdresser...

AndaLuciAnn · 05/02/2020 11:51

I don’t think you’re unreasonable to expect to leave the salon with your clothes undamaged at all.

If you apply the ‘wear old clothes’ rule to other scenarios then you wouldn’t complain if a decorator got paint on your carpet because you shouldn’t have had a good one put down if you knew you’d want your walls decorating at some stage.

If staining was a common issue they should tell you to wear old clothes when coming for a colour treatment.

Mrsjayy · 05/02/2020 11:51

To all of the people that turn up at the salon looking like bag ladies, your hair stylists are judging you!

And no shits do I give if she is "judging me" why am I supposed to care?

GiveHerHellFromUs · 05/02/2020 11:55

I do think it's a bit bonkers that you chose to wear a brand new jumper to get your hair bleached. Was the neck of your jumper higher than the gown?

The stylist asking you to move your head didn't have bad technique, you were clearly just sat in an awkward position.

butwhateverfor · 05/02/2020 11:55

@ChristopherTracy

it is true, it is very British to feel embarrassed and to say nothing. My DH (not British) is quite baffled by it. But I am totally guilty of it.

KatyCarrCan · 05/02/2020 11:56

I never wear old clothes to the hairdresser's. I didn't realise that was a 'thing'. OP, go back in and let them know. If the junior's technique is lacking then it's going to keep happening unless someone tells them.

Thedeadwood · 05/02/2020 12:00

Then they can fuck off :) HTH

PeppermintPasty · 05/02/2020 12:01

I can’t believe all the people saying you should have worn old clothes and so on. You were paying for a professional service and it fell short.

I’m a solicitor and this is an absolute classic, they are in the wrong fully, on the facts as you’ve stated them. Absolutely go back and request reimbursement for the damage. If they refuse it would be a small claim to the local county court, so probably not worth taking any further there (though you would win on the facts!). If they get arsey, complain.

redapplegreenapple · 05/02/2020 12:01

This happened to me before, it had dripped down the back too despite me wearing a gown. It was an old top but one that I liked - I only have clothes that I like! I didn’t mention it as I didn’t realise until later.

MummytoCSJH · 05/02/2020 12:03

I agree with you OP. Most of my appointments are when I get back from uni/doing something else so I wouldnt be wearing something scruffy else I'd be wearing it all day and I don't want to look scruffy. I've never given much thought to what I'm wearing those days at all. Accidents happen sure, but they are professionals and like you said, they can see where they are putting the product!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/02/2020 12:04

I would never think to wear something old or scruffy to the hairdresser. I tend to meet a friend for lunch afterwards, or go shopping since it’s generally on a Saturday. I would ring the salon and explain.

NameChange84 · 05/02/2020 12:11

Bag Lady?

Why does not wearing a brand new item automatically lead to “bag lady”?

Look, I’m definitely a good, classier dresser but if I was around bleach, I’d simply go in wearing something good in terms of my outerwear (a good coat or leather jacket) and a plainish T-Shirt or Blouse that is still good enough for public consumption but has seen better days and would have been soon going out to the charity shop anyway. Bag lady doesn’t come into it.

JammieCodger · 05/02/2020 12:16

It might be sensible to wear something you don’t mind being ruined, just in case, but the hairdresser is still at fault if it does get ruined. Definitely go back.

Backtoreality1 · 05/02/2020 12:17

Just go back in....this happened to me with a t-shirt. I took a picture of the damage and sent it to them and they refunded me the cost of the tshirt and gave a deduction for next appointment. Regardless of the cost of the jumper they should recompense you - if you have a good relationship with your hairdresser they will.

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 05/02/2020 12:17

I think I'd bring it in, show them and give them the chance to do something about it.

If they don't, then do what you've already said you might do and find another hair dresser.

I don't think it's your fault that they have dropped bleach on your jumper.

JammieCodger · 05/02/2020 12:18

And, I’m sure I sometimes look like a bag lady, but that doesn’t mean it’s ok to stain my clothes. I happen to like them!

BillieEilish · 05/02/2020 12:18

This happened to me with an old t shirt once when I was a teenager! I never ever wear anything nice to get my hair highlighted. Even as a teenager I knew to wear an old t shirt.

It would be foolish to wear something new Hmm

eggsandwich · 05/02/2020 12:25

Had a similar experience many years ago but it was with a fairly new coat, I think someone took my coat off the hook with bleach on there gloves and it was only when I next went to use it I noticed the bleach mark on the collar.

I was really annoyed as it was a lovely navy mac style coat, I didn’t go back and complain which I should of done at the time as they were going to do my wedding hair and also my bridesmaids hair so didn’t want to cause an issue, as it was the hairdresser who I had been seeing and did all my hair trial decided to book a holiday and wasn’t there when my bridesmaids and myself turned up on the day, would of been nice if she had told me she was going to be away I would of gone else where.

JRUIN · 05/02/2020 12:34

To be honest if I was happy with my hair do and the jumper wasn't expensive I wouldn't bother going back to complain. Maybe just see it as a lesson learned and don't wear your favourite clothes when you're going for a colour next time.

Drabarni · 05/02/2020 12:36

wear an old t shirt next time Confused

Beautiful3 · 05/02/2020 12:36

This happened to me before, I made a point of wearing it to my next appointment to show them what happened. They knocked some money off my bill, and I always wear old tops to the salon now.

GabsAlot · 05/02/2020 12:37

happened to my dsis at her regular salon was an accident but they reimbursed her although she couldnt find the same top again

just take it in and show them

Onthebrink87 · 05/02/2020 12:38

I worked as a colour technician years ago in a 'trendy' salon, whilst I never ruined anyone's clothing, I have seen it happen and the client was reimbursed without any fuss. Im the sort of person who wouldn't complain I'm a restaurant if the chicken was still breathing - but im a bit pathetic like that! If it happened to me, I would probably nip back to the salon with the jumper, mention this happened when you had your hair coloured and do the old 'I don't suppose you know how to get the stain out as it's fairly new and I'm quite fond of it' of course you can't wash a bleach stain out but if feel more comfortable acting dumb and being offered the money to reimburse rather than go in demanding one. If they happened to be rude about it and reluctant, this would validate a more proactive approach in my 'don't cause a fuss' brain!

EmeraldShamrock · 05/02/2020 12:42

Personally I'd put it down to experience if a junior rinsed my colour, although you probably shouldn't put up and shut up in life.
I'd worry the salon could deduct it from a junior's wage.
