To find SOME Brexiteer gloating embarrassing?

I have read threads saying that we have left and "nothing has happened, just like the millennium bug".

Well, that'll be because we are transition so the No Deal situation has been avoided - for now.

And the millennium bug didn't happen because loads of IT people worked their arses off for years to prevent it.

I have read a rant about us needing new passports for this summer costing £1000, due to remained MPs and civil servants wanting to "punish" leavers.

I am cringing at the level of gloating and "so nerr" posts on here, flinging about bollocks as facts, and celebrating something which noone seems to be able to demonstrate any positives for.

Just me?

Yes mykingdom. People like them. Good old salt of the earth racists. Who voted to make their own lives worse based on flag waving, bunting and feelings.

karencantobe · 03/02/2020 14:53

@CherryPavlova There are a couple of really good books written by anthropologists on English culture. And as someone who is not English it is incredibly obvious there is an English culture. I think your comment is like people who speak with a certain English accent claiming they have no accent.

mykingdom · 03/02/2020 15:07

@theunknownknown. I doubt the racist leavers needed your help in the guise of your Labour/remain vote, so it won't be a too much of a hardship to read that you have pulled the plug on further assistance.

theunknownknown · 03/02/2020 15:11

What a bizarre comment mykingdom.
But no worries, my support has well and truly disappeared for any working class Tory voting leaver.
And I’d rather shit in my hands and clap than listen to any more explanation on why they voted as they did.
Turkeys. Voting. For. Xmas.

CherryPavlova · 03/02/2020 18:05

karencantobe I’m sure books on English culture are fascinating but then England has never been an Eau member state. We need to remind ourselves that it was the United Kingdom that belonged to the Union. Other cultures are equally important- and there are differences aplenty but far more that unites us, The cost of Brexumay we’ll be the dissolution of our nation.
Meanwhile the English can dance around their Maypoles, eat mushy peas and play cricket on village greens.

busybarbara · 03/02/2020 18:06

I certainly don’t like to admit which country I live in anymore. Now I know how Germans felt in the 50s.

SirChing · 03/02/2020 18:36

It's all very well to say that people voted with their feelings. That's great, crack on. But then they shouldn't be surprised when analysis of those feelings shows that they are based on little relating to the EU. People shouldn't be surprised when they are then pilloried for that fact.

If People want to act in a nonsensical manner, which shows a lack of critical thinking ability and plenty of xenophobia, then those people should really stop being offended if some refer to them as thick racists.

OP posts:
SirChing · 03/02/2020 18:39

Actually, on the whole "feelings thing", for those whose feelings do boil down to xenophobia and lack of ability to engage in critical thinking, they probably don't "feel" that they are thick or racist, hence their offence.

But what THEY need to understand, is that the rest of the world doesn't view life through that persons feelings. They look at facts. And if a persons feelings are xenophobic and nonsensical, then the label of "thick and racist" is bang on the money.

SirChing · 03/02/2020 18:55

karencantobe a large part of English culture (which ISNT synonymous with UK culture) is the ability to take the piss out of ourselves and be self deprecating.

So of course we can take the piss out of Morris dancing etc.

We wouldn't generally take the piss out of other cultures, because we know that they already experience racism, and so we wouldn't joke about something which could be taken as "punching down".

Understand that, and you understand WHY there is the disparity in conversation.

Yes we joke about curry being the national dish. NOT because we are ashamed of roast beef and Yorkshire puddings, but because the UK has massively embraced curry, we have more curry restaurants than any other type.

What your comments show to me is that you don't appreciate the nuances of our culture. There is nothing wrong with that, but don't take it to mean that we feel shame.

So so much of this entire debate can be summarised as between those who can see nuance and closely examine facts, and those who don't bother to look at facts, or consider why things may be certain ways. So many leavers seem to slap broad brush thinking and are then offended when analysis reveals the lack of nuance in this.

karencantobe · 03/02/2020 18:57

@CherryPavlova The books are really interesting and I recommend them to others living in England not brought up here. It helped me understand the culture a lot better. Anthropology is not about cricket and cream teas, but about the hidden rules. England is a negative embarrassment culture which explains a lot of the hidden rules that makes it so hard to navigate when you have not been born here.

karencantobe · 03/02/2020 19:00

@SirChing Maybe I don't understand the culture fully. Have you missed that I said I was not brought up here? That does not make me thick and unable to understand nuance.

CherryPavlova · 03/02/2020 19:13

karencantobe I was born and bred here but have dual nationality to allow me continued European membership.
What are the names of the books? I’m always interested to understand my own culture. I suspect I might know most of the hidden rules but happy to check.
Unfortunately, lots of the hidden rules aren’t what people generally mean when they say we’ve lost our heritage and sovereignty. The hidden rules are courtesy and class markers. They aren’t waving St George’s flags or blaming ‘forriners’ for a lack of GPs and housing.

The hidden rules are lovely things like queueing properly and holding doors open, men walking on the outside of the pavement and removing hats when entering a building. They are about not taking flowers to a supper party and tipping, I suspect.

They aren’t the reason many voted for Brexit. Nobody voted to leave because there isn’t a cheese rolling event or Mummers play near their houses. The only argument given in a hundred different guises is concerns about immigration. Farage used that fear of difference and desire to blame someone else to his own ends. As did Johnson.

SirChing · 03/02/2020 19:41

@karencantobe Apologies, I HAD seen you say that and it actually wasn't you that I had in mind when I made those comments. Reading bsck though, I can see that it could be read that way.

If you don't see all the nuances that's because you aren't originally from here. Nothing to do with thickness.

I was referring to leavers who engaged in broad brush thinking, ignored nuance and voted based on feels. I dont think they should object to being referred to as thick if their arguments are nonsensical and not bourne out by facts and reality.

Was one of the books "Watching The English" by Kate Fox/Ford?

If so, that's very good and she does back up her assertions with data where needed.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 03/02/2020 22:08

I did enjoy’watching the english’

So much so that i bought a copy for ds1

CherryPavlova · 03/02/2020 23:24

I’ve just looked at a few pages and may suggest it for the next book club. It would be a hoot.

ginghambox · 04/02/2020 00:20

WE voted on feelings and the shite you have come out with ain't helping your cause.

SirChing · 04/02/2020 07:37

WE voted on feelings and the shite you have come out with ain't helping your cause

That isn't the most thorough or convincing argument I have ever heard.

This is really is an indictment on our educated system.

I thought that everyone studied 30's Germany? I thought that was intentionally in the syllabus to innoculate the population against all of this?

SirChing · 04/02/2020 08:59

@bingbangbing You would at least hope so.....

We're fucked.

How hard is Dutch to learn? Always liked that country

SirChing · 04/02/2020 10:21

We are indeed! And I have no idea actually. But most Dutch are perfect English speakers. They learn from tiny (yet another damning indictment of our education system!).

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 06/02/2020 12:52

I speak Dutch. It's one of the easier languages to learn.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 06/02/2020 17:35

ilovesooty

Really? I thought it would be difficult, with German-like grammar.

Shoukd I have a go?
