To find SOME Brexiteer gloating embarrassing?

SirChing · 01/02/2020 07:38

I have read threads saying that we have left and "nothing has happened, just like the millennium bug".

Well, that'll be because we are transition so the No Deal situation has been avoided - for now.

And the millennium bug didn't happen because loads of IT people worked their arses off for years to prevent it.

I have read a rant about us needing new passports for this summer costing £1000, due to remained MPs and civil servants wanting to "punish" leavers.

I am cringing at the level of gloating and "so nerr" posts on here, flinging about bollocks as facts, and celebrating something which noone seems to be able to demonstrate any positives for.

Just me?

Should be I must not I mustn’t

dimsum123 · 01/02/2020 08:11

@Mintjulia, but I do and will blame the leavers for this. If not them then who?

How do you suggest we 'move on?' We can't put it behind us and carry on like it never happened. It's going to affect all of us in a myriad of ways over the coming months, years and decades. You can't move on from something that's only just starting to happen.

Todaythiscouldbe · 01/02/2020 08:16

@Chloemol if you genuinely haven't seen any nastiness towards leave voters I am extremely surprised. Some of the things I've read on Mumsnet are vile.

SirChing · 01/02/2020 08:16

@Chloemol Well......it COULD say that I am a horrible person. Or it could be the case that I have been avoiding the Brexit threads for a while so haven't seen any bile.

OP posts:
SirChing · 01/02/2020 08:20

@dimsum123 quite! How do I move in from having mine and my daughter's EU citizenship removed? Half of my identity in terms of citizenship has been removed and I didn't agree to it.

I am bemused at people who feel we should all just "forget about it" and "move on". Not like I can "move on" to an EU country anymore is it?

Remainers like me won't be shutting up about Brexit. There were substantial issues in the Leave Campaign, lies on sides of busses, dismissing concerns as project fear, a growth in intolerance towards non British people (or even British people who aren't white British). There's talk of the NHS being on the table, supported by people who allow Virgin Group to poorly run NHS services already, sue the NHS and avoid paying tax (Virgin also own the Flybee airline and have just taken money from the government because Flybee was failing). The constituencies that voted conservative for the first time in a while, largely due to brexit, are now facing cuts, despite being told this wasn't the case. There was a lot about claiming valid questions were "project fear" and debate was shut down.

I won't be quiet because it is now absolutely imperative that those that put us into this situation make it work, and they make it work without selling off our NHS, without disadvantaging the most vulnerable in society, and they make it work in a way that is best for the country and not just sticking their noses in the trough and lining their own pockets. That's accountability.

Promoting the "we won shut up" translates to either:

  1. I'm too stupid to engage in sensible, rational debate on these issues either because I'm not politically informed, or I'm more bothered about feeling like I've won.
  2. I'm likely to personally/financially/politically gain from Brexit and I want to prevent transparency and being held accountable, so I'll shout about the "will of the people" and mobilise group 1 so I can hide in the shadows (has anyone seen or heard much from Jacob Rees-Mogg lately?)

Anyone else sensible, whether leave or remain, would be happy for the discussion and debate to continue in order to hold the government to account.

LolaSmiles · 01/02/2020 08:25

Apologies for the essay Smile
TLDR - We shouldn't be saying "shut up we won" because it's essential that those making decisions make it work, and make it work in the public interest, not to line their own pockets.

Any "we won, shut up on move on" or "no debate" too often means "I don't want to be held accountable or answer difficult questions so I'll throw a tantrum and call you mean".

Absolutely!

I did see some (drunk) gentlemen on Sky last night, slagging off remainers saying something along the lines of... the sky isn't falling around us, the world isn't ending, house prices haven't changed.. it was all SCARE TACTICS"

... this was at 11.09 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️... the fact that they expected any consequences to the vote, to be reflected NINE mins in shows how incredibly stupid people are.

Either way, it's done now so crack on with your lovely selves and we'll see how it works out for all of you.

AllergicToAMop · 01/02/2020 08:32

Both sides are embarrassing.
Some very gloaty leavers with the "millenium bug" and "finally less immurgrants" etc. No. It's wrong...
And on the other side you have some very moany remainers with "My EU friend who've lived here for last 20 years just lost all their rights". No. They haven't.

dimsum123 · 01/02/2020 08:33

@SirChing, well I hope a leaver will post and explain to you exactly how you should move on given your situation which has been caused directly by their vote.

I will certainly not be shutting up about brexit either @LolaSmiles. The leavers need to be held to account for every single consequence of Brexit and telling us to shut up is just their way of trying to evade responsibility for their actions. They're not going to get away with it afaic.

AllergicToAMop · 01/02/2020 08:39

Not like I can "move on" to an EU country anymore is it?

You can though

Cam77 · 01/02/2020 08:39

Asking this government to negotiate trade agreements with the entire world in the space of a couple of years. Asking this government to formulate a sensible and pragmatic immigration policy from scratch. Asking this government to make independent plans on intelligence sharing, food safety etc.

What on Earth could go wrong?

Still, I guess we’re all bored in Britain and have nothing much to be worrying - there’s no killer virus doing the rounds, planet earth is in top notch shape, the cost of living has never been lower, our schools are topping all the global league tables, there’s no obesity epidemic, and our kids don’t top the world for teenage pregnancies and depression.

No, why not have a bit of fun, a little bit of a gamble with jobs and the economy and whatnot, as it’s all going so well.

SirChing · 01/02/2020 08:41

@AllergicToAMop How?

OP posts:
ChazP · 01/02/2020 08:44

I have no intention of shutting up or getting over it. Just yesterday Javid told all cabinet departments to slash their budgets by 5%. And that’s just the start. Every person who voted leave and then voted Tory last year are accountable and responsible for this and everything else that’s coming our way.

dimsum123 · 01/02/2020 08:44

@Cam77, exactly and that's without even going into the actual terms of the trade deals and just how badly we are going to be screwed by the US and China.

catpyjamas · 01/02/2020 08:46

I had a quiet night after a long week. Went upstairs to go to bed and suddenly there was loud cheering, music started blasting out, fireworks started going off over my house. I looked at the clock to see it was exactly 11pm and apparently my neighbour wanted us all to know they were celebrating. Hmm

AllergicToAMop · 01/02/2020 08:48

How?

What do you mean "how"?Confused
You pack, find accomodation, get on a train/ferry/plane and travel to the chosen EU country, find a job, fill up some papers and voilà.

After the transitional period you (depending on agreements you might need to get job offer first) fill up the paperwork, pack, find accomodation, get on a train/ferry/plane and travel to the chosen EU country.

Borders are not shutting down so no one can leave or stay. People were traveling for work between countries well before all joined EU. I also find quite funny that suddenly everyone planned to move abroad...

Note I am not pro Brexit. I am just massively fed up by both sides putting up wrong info and panicking the vulnerable.

Ah, see all that is great.....except I can't get a job as I am too disabled to work. And there won't be reciprocal benefits anymore.

I think I may be one of those "vulnerable"!

OP posts:
Manchmallehrerin · 01/02/2020 08:50

The leavers who celebrated last night in parliament square by doing nazi salutes to the national anthem are more than embarrassing. It is an outrage and an offence.

I for one will not roll over and be represented by these people.

SirChing · 01/02/2020 08:52

@AllergicToAMop but you are exactly right though, it is shafting those of us who are "vulnerable" the most.

And no, I can't move abroad now but did actually have plans to in the future. They are now toast. So please don't tell me that I am overreacting.

OP posts:
catx1606 · 01/02/2020 08:52

So there are posters on here who say that they haven't seen anything extreme or nasty being said here? How about the names "thick, racist, stupid, uneducated, bigots, trolls etc" that's name calling and uncalled for. You don't think that's nasty? I I you'd let your children call another child that in school so why is it ok for you to call another adult that? The fact that you don't see anything wrong with that is shocking.

I see vile hostility towards leavers on most brexit threads. Mn is predominantly a remain site, that's obvious but everyone should be able to express an opinion without being called a name or sworn at which I've seen. There probably are genuine leave voters on here but they won't say much because they know the crap that's going to get flung back at them.

Theduchessstill · 01/02/2020 08:54

Every word of what LolaSmiles said.

The very last thing we should be doing is shutting up now.

SirChing · 01/02/2020 08:54

@Manchmallehrerin Good God, did they? That would be hilarious that they celebrated using a gesture associated with Nazi Germany (Europe) if it wasn't so fucking offensive.

Today 08:02 SirChing

What makes you think you have more information and are better informed than those you don't agree with?

Because you only have to listen to most Brexiteers to realise they are usually woefully uninformed. They’ve fell for the sound bites, think Brexit is now “done” and use phrases such as “make Britain great again”, “control our own laws”, “won’t be ruled by Germany”
All Bollox!!
