To think not many people will turn up for the Brexshit 'celebration' in London

I see they've put flags down the mall but I feel like not many people will turn up for this. I know there's the big draw of farage, Widdecombe, and possibly the racist Jim Davidson. AIBU to think there's not likely to be a big turnout?

Leaver business owner on bbc1 just now, whose business was supported by EU funding but voted leave cos he thinks UK will be better alone. If the economy troughs he’ll be ok cos his food product
Is cheap. Maybe that’s what tim Wetherspoon is thinking too. I’m so fed up of the lot of them.

Lordfrontpaw · 01/02/2020 09:38

Wetherspoon - wasn’t he winging about staff leaving because of the racist sentiments?

PhilSwagielka · 01/02/2020 10:15

I know it's a minority, but Christ people like this scare me. And Patel and Javid are ON THEIR SIDE.

What's going to happen when these people realise that Brexit isn't going to get rid of all the foreigners/non-whites?

It's so vile philswagielka

I think those racists have always existed, just that now they feel they have some power/a voice. Maybe by 'unleashing potential' BJ meant unleashing potential for racism to flow freely Sad

And if we say anything we'll just get accused of being woke or whatever. I'm expected to sit back and take anti-Semitism and BME people are expected to sit back and take racism and just laugh it off.

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 11:00

“ BME people are expected to sit back and take racism and just laugh it off.”

No one expects that of me. I think we need to take a more balanced approach. Being a member of the EU didn’t stop racism against me, did it? If it did, I certainly didn’t notice.

We can start to remember that being British isn't about colour. I’m 44, well in the next week I am! I remember the time when I was simply accepted as British. Then the Nish Kumars of the world came along to fuck it up. To tell me I’m not British, to tell me the same things the BNP tried to tell my parents.

PhilSwagielka · 01/02/2020 11:07

@Autumnrose1 I actually agree with you, you're just as British as the rest of us. So are all the people in that tweet. I mean, I don't like Patel or Javid but I'm going to attack them for their politics and not the colour of their skin. What I meant was that I feel minorities have to put up with a lot of shit and if we argue about it we just get told to shut up. I had plenty of it during the elections, to the point where I just got burned out trying to explain to people on the left that anti-Semitism is a problem on BOTH SIDES and that it wasn't just criticism of Israel.

Being a member of the EU didn't stop racism or anti-Semitism, true - it's always been there - but I feel like it's been legitimised now. Even more so. People being told to fuck off home and such, swastikas being graffitied on Caribbean takeaways and synagogues, Windrush, and so on.

And no, I don't think you're a coconut or whatever, that's just stupid. Everyone has different reasons for voting Brexit.

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 11:13

And Phil, that’s a pants explanation for your post which said “these people of BME origin scare me because they don’t think the way I do.”

Minorities putting up with a lot of shit - well, the people stirring up shit aren’t all white by any stretch. Racism was well on the way out until some groups, including many BME people, decided to make it an issue again.

I know the likes of Nish Kumar have got bills to pay like anyone, but really, they couldn’t find another way other than chucking out racism?

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 11:14

I mean chucking out racism as a commodity to sell.

Sorry, I’m getting ragey, I’ll go away now.

PhilSwagielka · 01/02/2020 11:50

No, that isn't what I meant. I should have been clearer. I'm not scared of Khan or Patel. I'm scared of the Nazi dickheads who want them gone because they're not white. Even though they're on the right themselves. No matter how conservative they are, to people like that poster, they'll always be scum.

Resisting Hate posted these screenshots from Telegram. It makes for grim reading. 'Romans' is the Nazi salute.

In case they don't work:

'Papers signed. Happy Brexit Day. If I wake up tomorrow and see a single paki I'll be fuming. Whole thing a wste of time otherwise. Papers signed. No more excuses. Expect em all gone. Cheers.'

'Britain is privately racist and there is nothing wrong with that. LONG LIVE RACIST BRITAIN.'

'Ah, fuck. Just counting the days until I can shout the n word in public and throw Romans. (...) Boris is gonna kick em all out, right? Been keepin my lips sealed about this in case any remoaners got wind but think we can afford to talk about it in the open now.'

And no, I didn't fake it, I don't have access to Telegram. Too dangerous for me to go on there.

Cinammoncake · 01/02/2020 12:06

I hope those have been reported to the Police philswagielka

Regarding the turn-out, there was a competing event at the Royal Mint in Wales, where people got a chance to strike and keep their own Brexit 50p. I don't think it would have been realistically possible for people to manage to go to London on the same day!

BurneyFanny · 01/02/2020 12:37

Sure, that accounts for the turnout in London being crap Hmm

Clavinova · 01/02/2020 12:43

I'm obviously looking at a different report on the BBC website:

"Brexit parties were held in pubs and social clubs across the UK as the country counted down to its official departure."

"Thousands gathered in Parliament Square to celebrate Brexit"

otterturk · 01/02/2020 12:44

It was pretty busy last night. Really lovely atmosphere.

BurneyFanny · 01/02/2020 12:50

Hundreds, according to the BBC. Either way, still a bit shit compared to the People's March turnout. Thousands out of 17.4 million compared to hundreds of thousands out of 16 million.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 01/02/2020 12:50

What does it matter how many or how few turned up

It was the same as Trump’s inauguration many almost gloating at the lower turn out

Trump is still the president

And Brexit still happened

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 01/02/2020 12:52

Well Burney I think most people are now coming to the conclusion that regardless of the huge matches/campaigns a second referendum was never ever going to happen people were fooled into believing there was a chance

Clavinova · 01/02/2020 13:22

Hundreds, according to the BBC.

I am quoting the BBC - definitely says "thousands";
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-51333314

Either way, still a bit shit compared to the People's March turnout.

Why would people want to pay Friday night hotel bills in London when they can attend local parties organised in pubs and clubs? The People's Vote marches took place during the day - on a Saturday. Not to mention that People's Vote MPs lost their seats in the general election.

ManonBlackbeak · 01/02/2020 14:27

If you look at the photos there was hardly anyone under the age of 50 there. Very older skewed and mostly white.

No doubt I'll be attacked for saying that but it is what it is.

PhilSwagielka · 01/02/2020 15:05

There were local celebrations outside London, like in Warrington, it's much easier to go to those if you live in the north.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/02/2020 15:12

It's hardly problematic to say it was white, older people who attended

ExEUCitizen · 01/02/2020 17:03

It seems problematic to point out that it was white older people who caused Brexit. It seems problematic to point out many truths in Britain. People prefer their nice social fantasies.
