To think not many people will turn up for the Brexshit 'celebration' in London

I see they've put flags down the mall but I feel like not many people will turn up for this. I know there's the big draw of farage, Widdecombe, and possibly the racist Jim Davidson. AIBU to think there's not likely to be a big turnout?

I disagree. There are a lot of wankers around unfortunately.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 31/01/2020 10:19

London probably not the best place to hold the celebration...wont be a huge turnout

Cornettoninja · 31/01/2020 10:23

They’ll blame the weather I’m sure.

No one I know, remainer or leaver, gives a shit really. It’s over saturation isn’t it? Maybe if this had all happened within a year of the referendum there would have been more of an appetite from the leaver camp but I don’t think there’s a mood (at least where I am) for celebrating something people believe should have happened years ago.

Brits are a tough crowd at the best of times, I don’t think getting them waving flags to celebrate mediocrity is a realistic goal.

Everanewbie · 31/01/2020 10:27

Its strange to me how people can be so passionate on the EU whether Brexiteer of remainer (or rejoiner?).

It was a trading bloc. We've decided we want to negotiate our own trade and repatreate some powers.

Not cause for protest or celebration.

Areyoufree · 31/01/2020 10:27

I think lots of people will go. Rightly or wrongly, there was clearly a lot of support for Brexit. People have invested a lot of time and energy in this not being a huge mistake. As much as those who voted remain (and yes, I was one of them) are sure that this will be a bad thing, I am hoping that we were wrong, and that the gamble will pay off.

At the end of the day, they are as sure that they were right as we are that they were wrong. Who's to say how this will turn out?

slipperywhensparticus · 31/01/2020 10:28

They probably will and it will be filmed and broadcast live and the other countrys will watch in shock and awe of it all

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 31/01/2020 10:31

This is not a time for gloating and celebration and it is up to the politicians to lead the way. Whichever side you are on there is a lot of work to do, and we must pull together. This is only the beginning of a difficult period of negotiations to get the best deals. It would be a wonderful example if this was reflected on MN. I have seen far more unpleasantness here that in the real communities where the levels of tolerance of others views are higher. Please can we just start. No amout od nastiness will make things better.

a classic example of how not to heal

eurochick · 31/01/2020 10:33

I predict there will be a few dozen Britain First wankers. The Leavers in the Shires are not going to get the train into London on a Friday night for this. My parents voted leave. They will be sitting at home with a cup of tea watching Corrie.

Cinammoncake · 31/01/2020 10:35

we must pull together.

What compromises or concessions have been made to at least 48 percent of voters who wanted to remain?
Pull together seems to mean stfu
Not going to happen.

The Britain First/EDL/Tommy Robinson lot will be there. Expect fights.

Jammydodger1981 · 31/01/2020 10:54

@Cinammoncake

Posts like this make me wish we had a like button. Brexit will be absolutely shit and it will be all the remainer’s fault as we didn’t ‘pull together’. Fuck Off.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 31/01/2020 10:56

Healing is impossible. The day after the vote I woke up, and thought, "well, maybe it'll work out".

People who had voted to Remain gathered on social media to commiserate and share worries, and I saw people, whom I'd thought were decent, making fun of them for being scared. Since 2017, I have seen people laugh-reacting and posting 'project fear' to people expressing concern about cancer treatment, the survival of their small businesses and so much more. And people liked the mockery.

I'd thought British values included graceful winning. Turns out I was wrong.

If the Brexit crowd had, as a group, generally said, "I understand you're scared but I think that it's for the best, but I'll lobby my MP to ask that this concern is addressed in the negotiations", pulling together might be possible.

I'm not going to forget the vile hostility from the winners of this, and I don't expect the victims of it will either.

KaptenKrusty · 31/01/2020 10:57

the type of people who would attend something like this wouldn't travel to London for it i'd say!

Monkeybunkey · 31/01/2020 10:58

My parents voted leave. They will be sitting at home with a cup of tea watching Corrie.

Yep, I voted Leave and intend to be doing the same as them tonight!

PhilSwagielka · 31/01/2020 10:58

It's the laughing about disabled/chronically ill people that gets me. Yeah, being in constant pain is hilarious. Ha fucking ha.

NailsNeedDoing · 31/01/2020 10:59

a classic example of how not to heal

Not really, it’s just a meaningless opinion.

I’ll start to heal when when we have discovered the extent of what brexit actually means. Until we know what we’re dealing with, whether we’ve lost as much as some of us fear, or if it’s not as bad as we’d thought, it is impossible to make peace with.

penberrh · 31/01/2020 11:04

’pull together’ seems to mean stfu

Couldn’t agree more.

Given that most polls show that less than half the population now wants Brexit and that it is distressing to many that don’t, I think that overt celebration is deeply crass.

I don’t think there will be a big turnout. It will only be EDL/Britain first types, of which there are thankfully few.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 31/01/2020 11:06

JamieVardysHavingAParty sorry to hear your experiences, they are valid of course, I would say though that there has been vileness from every corner of this referendum- for that reason alone I see no reason to celebrate

penberrh · 31/01/2020 11:07

Having a cup of tea and watching Corrie seems the perfect way to celebrate if Leave is your thing. Very British in content and understatement without being in anyone’s face :)

Pumpkinpie1 · 31/01/2020 11:11

Nothing to celebrate as far as I’m concerned. A loss of rights for workers & the disabled, less on the shelves for more & more expensive holidays

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 31/01/2020 11:15

The Britain First/EDL/Tommy Robinson lot will be there. Expect fights.

There will only be fights with the Tommy Robinson lot if people turn up to demonstrate against them and give them someone to fight with.

If you don’t want to risk violence then it’s best not to go where you might incite some, I’d have thought. If you choose to then it becomes as much your fault as theirs. Fronting up to thuggish people and screaming in their faces rarely achieves a peaceful outcome.

In the absence of any left wing or Remain demonstrators who’ve only gone along to make things as unpleasant for the winning side as possible, the Tommy Robinson lot are hardly going to start a ruck with Anne Widdicombe, are they?

Best way to deal with things like the EDL is, as ever, is to ignore them.

Ijustwanttoretire · 31/01/2020 11:24

I'm not going to forget the vile hostility from the winners of this, and I don't expect the victims of it will either.

No, like those who voted Leave won't forget being called racist ALL THE TIME. Or the Leave vote being blamed on 'the old people who will be dead so won't care'.

The vitriol from both sides has been appalling - but at the end of the day a democratic vote chose leave. End of.

Cheeryandmerry · 31/01/2020 11:27

I’m laughing at the idea of the Brexiters blaming the weather for a poor turnout. How very “snowflakey”!

littlepaddypaws · 31/01/2020 11:31

all the time people are throwing shit at each other it's so childish and pathetic. don't engage with anything you don't want to and stop listening to the shit being put over by BOTH sides, there are plenty of twats in leave and remain.
calling anyone a twat on here isn't going to change ANYTHING, it just stirs up more hatred.
had remain won they might have celebrated and that equally could have caused trouble, just as leave might experience tonight, but hope.fully not
