To ask those in favour of Scottish Independence to join together to renew our hopes for the future

hadenough · 30/01/2020 23:40

At 23:00 on the 31st January, Scotland will be dragged out of the EU against our will.

Scotland did not vote for this. Scotland does not want this.

Now we're told by Boris Johnson that our voices will be silenced. Apparently, Scotland must remain in the UK, and the right to express our will to be independent will not be 'allowed'.

On Wednesday we saw the Brexit Party wave union flags, and embarrass the whole of these islands. I don't want to be a part of it.

So now, we will no longer be a part of the EU, and we're told we should shut up and get on with it. I won't.

It will be a truly depressing moment for me to see Scotland dragged out of the EU.

But I hope with this, we can all come together in Scotland and have a renewed focus on campaigning for independence, and ultimately righting a wrong.

You had your vote. The majority wanted to be in the UK. End off.

ThanksMateThanksMate · 31/01/2020 02:20

That's what Teresa May said. (But "of")

RichPetunia · 31/01/2020 02:54

No. I'm in Scotland. Please be quiet and accept not everyone believes in the SNP.

Newmetoday · 31/01/2020 05:55

Do you honesty think that if Scotland get independence, they’ll get back in the EU? Really? SNP have really done a number on you if you think that. The country will sink. Sturgeon will be long gone so someone else can take the fall for the shitshow that would happen. All they care about is independence, not the people. It’s time people woke up to it.

NellNorth · 31/01/2020 06:17

I want prosperity- we have staggered from the 2008 crash, to Indyref, to Brexit. I’m tired. I want to raise my Scottish children in Scotland, in peace and PROSPERITY. This constant chant for independence ruins our stability, it frightens off investment, and it is bad for us, our economy and our future. Leave us be.

VideographybyLouBloom · 31/01/2020 06:19

I’m genuinely interested in what your definition of independence is if you are so desperate to still be part of the EU but at the same time so desperate for independence from Britain. So really it’s just hatred of England and the English? I’d love to see how Scotland get on as an independent nation. Who is going to pay for your university fees? The benefits for your millions of unemployed? Your prescriptions? The EU won’t be begging you for membership as you actually have to have something worth offering to them, not just to take take take.

Twooter · 31/01/2020 06:34

ThanksMate -you are so naive if you think things can’t get worse with Independence.

I believe theSNPs should concentrate on schools, police, nhs etc. See how things pan out with Brexit. If it’s an unmitigated disaster in 20 years time they can go for independence then, and most of the country may be with them.

ethelfleda · 31/01/2020 06:44

YANBU OP
I’m depressed as anything about the current state of this country. I’ve taken to burying my head in the sand. I’m English, by the way. If Scotland were to vote for independence and retain EU membership, would I be allowed to live there please? Smile

titsbumfannythelot · 31/01/2020 06:59

Agree with @NellNorth there will be even more years of uncertainty if the SNP continue on this vain. The Brexit dust should be allowed to settle before any further destabilising referendum.

Tories wanted Brexit and couldn't negotiate it, imagine the length and acrimony surrounding negotiations for independence

AlmostAlwyn · 31/01/2020 07:10

I’m genuinely interested in what your definition of independence is if you are so desperate to still be part of the EU but at the same time so desperate for independence from Britain

Scotland wants control of its own finances. The UK does not send all its taxes to the EU for a part of it to be returned and the rest allocated to EU projects that will not benefit UK citizens.

Scotland would pay for health services, university fees, benefits, etc in exactly the same way as other countries. With taxation and allocation of resources. It's not rocket science. And Scotland does not have "millions of unemployed" (110,000 as of September last year). Which of the many countries that have left the UK has failed and begged to rejoin the UK? The EU hasn't "begged" anyone to join, but I see no reason why they would refuse. We already meet the criteria.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 31/01/2020 07:12

If Scotland has another referendum, and again it's a No to independence vote... Will you want another in 5 years?

I hate the fact we leave the EU today and my children's world has just got a lot smaller... But what's the point of elections etc if we discard the result as we don't like it?

TitianaTitsling · 31/01/2020 07:15

we saw the Brexit Party wave union flags, and embarrass the whole of these islands. I don't want to be a part of it.. But when the SNP are having a parade and waving the Saltire then that's wonderful?.... I also wish the SNP would focus schools, police, nhs etc.

VideographybyLouBloom · 31/01/2020 07:25

@AlmostAlwyn please explain how Scotland as an independent nation would meet the criteria to join the EU? Especially at a time when the EU is about to lose its third largest contributor.

PineappleDanish · 31/01/2020 07:28

Agree with "bore off".

I am Scottish, I voted to remain in the EU. I'd rather we were staying, but we're not. So is life.

All the "join together" shite - you've done that already with your SNP voting and your All Under One Banner marches. The very last thing we need now is more division and another fucking referendum.

Clangus00 · 31/01/2020 07:29

I can’t wait to throw off the shackles and wake to an independent Scotland!
Alba gu bràth.

MorrisZapp · 31/01/2020 07:37

The nats were on it big time last night. Crying over being pulled from their favourite institution, Brussels. Could they name their MEP I wonder? Getting emotional about saying goodbye to those wonderful countries full of our friends.

And they'd like to illustrate their sadness at this loss by building a wall just below Berwick.

It doesn't make the slightest bit of sense.

stouffer · 31/01/2020 07:43

As an English nationalist in the Billy Bragg mold (ie proud but inclusive) I wholeheartedly support Scotland’s right to determine its own future. One caveat must be that it should be entire independence without being financially underwritten by the English taxpayer as happens now. Devo Max is not independence, it’s having your cake and eating it.

Mamimawr · 31/01/2020 07:46

I'm wishing you all the best Scotland. We'll be watching in Wales!!

MorrisZapp · 31/01/2020 07:48

It's all talk though. The reality is that the quiet/silent majority are never going to vote for a hard border with England and a new, unknown currency. Have the vote I reckon, see exactly how big the appetite is for wrenching countries apart.

MaxNormal · 31/01/2020 07:49

OP did ask for those in favour of independence to join together. No need to therefore open the thread just to type "bore off".

MinkowskisButterfly · 31/01/2020 07:50

As I've said on other threads, I'm English but hope whole heartedly Scotland can gain independence. I will be claiming Scottish citizenship if you do manage it (dad was scottish and according to the previous white paper my children and me would be able to claim citizenship and we would).

Cacaca · 31/01/2020 07:51

Seriously just do one. Scotland voted to remain part of the UK. If Brexit hadn’t happened that awful SNP lot would still be looking for an excuse to hold another referendum. How about respecting the decision of the first vote.

Tombakersscarf · 31/01/2020 07:54

OP probably should not post in AIBU - but was quite clear she wanted a thread for supporters of independence. If I saw a thread for supporters of dogs, cyclists or even Boris Johnson, I would not open it to have an argument. What is the bloody point?

MorrisZapp · 31/01/2020 07:54

You can never have enough democracy! Until 51% vote yes, at which point irreversible changes will be made and we won't be able to vote on it again.

SusanneLinder · 31/01/2020 07:57

Independence is not just about the SNP. Many people that want Independence are not SNP supporters. And the part about " they had their vote", well we have had 3 general elections since 2014.
