It’s rude to take one look at the dinner I have cooked then get lots of condiments for it.

I spend time preparing a meal that is tasty and balanced, H takes one look at it, doesn’t taste it or anything, just gets his collection of condiments from the fridge and smothers his dinner.
We are talking things like truffle mayo ( he is a bit wanky with his condiment collection) so things that will fundamentally change the flavour of the meal. And no, I didn’t make fish and chips. ketchup or mayo, not both, would be acceptable in that case.
I think it’s unbelievably rude of him, he thinks it’s perfectly fine.

Depends on what it was.

CheshireChat · 29/01/2020 22:35

Bit rude, but ultimately he's eating it so it's his problem really.

I'd season it to cater exactly to my tastes though.

BellatrixLestat · 29/01/2020 22:35

YABU.

Some people like condiments. Myself included.

MsVestibule · 29/01/2020 22:36

And no, I didn’t make fish and chips. ketchup or mayo, not both, would be acceptable in that case.. This sentence alone makes me think that you are exceptionally controlling about condiments! You would honestly (try to) force somebody to choose between ketchup and mayo???

NothingIsWrong · 29/01/2020 22:37

My husband covers everything I make in chilli sauce. I find it exceptionally rude, but generally just bite my tongue

GrolliffetheDragon · 29/01/2020 22:38

Ketchup, mayo and tartar sauce with fish and chips surely?

MarinaMarinara · 29/01/2020 22:38

I may be missing the point but what is wrong with mayo AND ketchup with fish and chips. In the rare occasions I have fish and chips I like to have both and sometimes tartar sauce as well and if it’s on my plate I can’t see why that is an issue for anyone else...?

Wasail · 29/01/2020 22:38

The meal didn’t require condiments, it had a sauce.

OP posts:
pooboobsleeprepeat · 29/01/2020 22:39

If he seasons it too does your head explode?

june2007 · 29/01/2020 22:40

Depends. Roast beef you mayw want hoarse radish, Turkey cranberry sauce. But I get where your coming from.

Wasail · 29/01/2020 22:40

The ketchup and mayo comment was just light hearted, I don’t really mind what goes on fish and chips, tarter sauce in my case.

Oh god. I actually can't believe there are people who find it rude when others use condiments for their dinner!
Ever been to a restaurant op? When they serve your meal they say 'would you like any sauces?'
This is actually ridiculous!

ImTakingTheEssence · 29/01/2020 22:41

Yeah I would say if you've spend a long time cooking it then yes taste it first at least.
I have to say I am guilty of this. I can't have food plain, it has to have something on it. Normally hot sauce and it doesn't matter who's cooked it even if I eat out.

Wasail · 29/01/2020 22:42

Okay, appropriate condiments I can see your point.
He mashes horseraddish onto fish Hmm

Solina · 29/01/2020 22:42

I personally do not care if people add condiments/salt/pepper/chili on food I make for them. Don't have the energy to get offended for stuff like that.

I make a delicious lasagne and then smother it in ketchup. Same with bolognese. And I use hot sauce mixed in mayo on quite a few things too. I like it and it is on my plate so not forcing it on anyone else.

AhoyMrBeaver · 29/01/2020 22:42

What did you cook and what were the lots of condiments he added? I'm all for condiments, but have never wanted to put lots on one plate.

Mama1219 · 29/01/2020 22:42

Everyone enjoys food differently. You've cooked the meal to your liking, it won't be everyone's preference. Don't feel insulted, everyone's taste buds are different

goldenorbspider · 29/01/2020 22:43

Guilty I have hot sauce and mayo with everything. Curry an exception. What did you make op?

AppropriateAdult · 29/01/2020 22:43

Meh. DH is a really good cook and does most of the cooking in our house, but he still tends to use loads of condiments on his own dinners. I wouldn’t take it as a criticism of the food.

bumblingbovine49 · 29/01/2020 22:44

Goodness.thr things peoepl.get upset about. DH smothers everything ( and I menan everything) in chilli sauces of varying types and sometimes mayonnaise.

I genuinely don't care. It is his taste buds and I want him to enjoy his meal . If the food was just.for him,. he'd prefer a lot.more spice and chilli.than ds likes so the chilli sauces used on plainer food.is a compromise that works.for.us as a family

chardonm · 29/01/2020 22:44

What was the dinner? How can anyone possibly opine without that info?

Yes if you made an ottolenghi recipe that requires preserved lemon and whatnot ....

AhoyMrBeaver · 29/01/2020 22:45

The meal didn’t require condiments, it had a sauce.

That's just according to your taste. I often add something to saucy meals, usually hot sauce or Henderson's relish.

BlackBlueBell · 29/01/2020 22:46

YABU. He’s just eating his food how he likes it, you may not like condiments with your meal but he clearly does. Leave him be. Some people just really love sauce.

20wedding19 · 29/01/2020 22:47

Hahaha - my husband does this, he covers 95% of what I cook for him in very hot chilli sauce but then he was born and brought up in a part of the world where red hot food is the norm - I have never thought of it as rude, just the way he is, we are different people with different tastes no?

user1473878824 · 29/01/2020 22:47

I’m with you OP. It is rude. I at least liberally taste things before asking for salt or pepper. DP smothers everything in ketchup regardless. You taste something, oh it’s fine or oh I would like truffle mayo. Not just this needs x y z.
