It’s rude to take one look at the dinner I have cooked then get lots of condiments for it.

I spend time preparing a meal that is tasty and balanced, H takes one look at it, doesn’t taste it or anything, just gets his collection of condiments from the fridge and smothers his dinner.
We are talking things like truffle mayo ( he is a bit wanky with his condiment collection) so things that will fundamentally change the flavour of the meal. And no, I didn’t make fish and chips. ketchup or mayo, not both, would be acceptable in that case.
I think it’s unbelievably rude of him, he thinks it’s perfectly fine.

I'm with you op, I think its very rude. I'd just stop cooking him meals with sauces on, just give him totally plain food. Don't even bother trying to make food palatable to him. Just make your own food and give him a plate of chips or a bowl of plain pasta or plain rice. He can fill his boots with processed crappy condiments then.
He tells you that salt isn't good? He's got a cheek.

Purpleartichoke · 29/01/2020 23:09

I have certain meals that DH cooks that I know I will want to add certain condiments. Was this a repeat dish?

CooCooCoo · 29/01/2020 23:09

I think you should let people enjoy their food.
Bottom line really

HeronLanyon · 29/01/2020 23:11

‘His condiments’ this made me laugh. The disdain! Grin

KurriKurri · 29/01/2020 23:11

The raised salt eyebrow is a bit much - ketchup has salt in it, maybe he should give that up.

dellacucina · 29/01/2020 23:11

I see why you're annoyed, but I have opted for YABU because it appears he has form for this. Sounds like he just doesn't have a gourmet's sensibilities.

lastqueenofscotland · 29/01/2020 23:11

My DP covers EVERYTHING in hot sauce and salt without tasting it. I really like spicy food and the amount of times I’ll tell him to taste it first and he’s rendered it inedible Angry

cushioncovers · 29/01/2020 23:12

Goes off to google fish roulade

PickAChew · 29/01/2020 23:14

He likes what he likes. And he did eat it.

TeeniefaeTroon · 29/01/2020 23:17

Every year my granda adds salt to his soup on Christmas day without tasting it. That does annoy me. One year I’m going to make really salty broth and see what happens.

TeddyIsaHe · 29/01/2020 23:22

To be fair to him, truffle mayo goes with everything.

Horseradish and fish? Not so much.

Usingmyindoorvoice · 29/01/2020 23:22

I think his additions sound very tasty. Horseradish is great with fish, and chilli and cheese work well together.
Maybe your meal was actually a bit flavourless?
Anyhow, YABU he didn’t make you eat them too.

TheStuffedPenguin · 29/01/2020 23:22

The ketchup and mayo comment was just light hearted, I don’t really mind what goes on fish and chips, tarter sauce in my case

Well there's a surprise - tarter Grin

MistyCloud · 29/01/2020 23:22

@Wasail You sound HUGELY controlling and fussy. Wouldn't want to come for a meal at YOUR house, and be glared at and judged for DARING to put a bit of salt or ketchup on something.

If you had a go at me, I would say 'seriously, don't ask me for a meal again, you fruitloop!'

4amWitchingHour · 29/01/2020 23:22

I'm with you OP. Just cook what you want for yourself and let him smother whatever weird combination of sauces over it that he fancies. As long as you enjoy yours that's what matters :)

WellHolyGodMiley · 29/01/2020 23:23

yeh that's rude

MistyCloud · 29/01/2020 23:24

@BigChocFrenzy

He obviously finds your food too bland.

LOL! Grin

Justaboy · 29/01/2020 23:29

Well there is a very good cook here bless her, but i have my fish and chips at the weekend that a treat! A complete bottle of Colmans Tartare sauce go's on the fish and a bottle of tomato ketchup is dumped on the chips not much salt is needed, and its a feast of delights:)

Ameliablue · 29/01/2020 23:29

I wouldn't do it as a guest in someone else's home but when I'm in my own home I'm fussier about what I eat so if I think oh has tried to make something I like, I'd at least try it but he does sometimes make things that he knows I don't like, so in that situation I would add sauce if it would improve it. So in answer to your question, it depends on the circumstances.

DeRigueurMortis · 29/01/2020 23:29

Condiments are a very good thing.

What's not to love about horseradish/mustard with roast beef. Mint sauce/red-current jelly with lamb. Hot pepper sauce to liven up a chilli/curry made mild enough for children. Dipping a chip into ketchup/mayo. Worcestershire sauce drizzled over cheese on toast etc etc

They work because they as flavour pairings enhance the taste of the "main event".

I don't need to taste my food to know that some condiments will make it better.

That said I can't imagine ANY meal being enhanced by a combination of truffle mayo, chilli and horseradish sauce.

The combination of that with fish/cheese makes me want to heave - in fact any one of them feels like a crime to dish being served.

So yes, if I'd put effort (and the expense of nice ingredients) into a meal and DH did this without even tasting it I'd be pissed off.

Frankly you'd be as well giving him a plain jacket potato or a plate of chips and his condiments. It's obvious that whatever you serve him is secondary to the stuff he'll slather over it (especially as he doesn't even taste it).

It's true that it's absolutely up to him what he eats and how he flavours his food.

It's equally true that you don't have to cook for someone who doesn't appreciate it.

Personally I'd let him cook for himself and leave him to it.

TatianaLarina · 29/01/2020 23:31

Horseradish and fish? Not so much.

On the contrary it’s a fairly well known combination - it’s v good.

TatianaLarina · 29/01/2020 23:33

I can see how OP would find it rude and take it as a criticism of her cooking; on the other fish and cheese sauce does sound bland.

TatianaLarina · 29/01/2020 23:33

hand^

cushioncovers · 29/01/2020 23:34

Well there's a surprise - tarter Grin

😂

BillHadersNewWife · 29/01/2020 23:37

I know what you mean OP but different people have different tastes. My husband also loves condiments and I personally think he misses out on some lovely flavours....how can he enjoy a meal when it's covered in chilli sauce? But that's how he likes it....everything!
