My 12 year old still loves Lego especially Star Wars and Ninjago etc. He had a large Star Wars ship for Xmas & still plays with it, reads Lego books etc.

My mother things he’s too old for it (although she hasn’t specified what she thinks he should be doing at 12)

I always thought Lego was for any age to be honest and would rather he played with Lego than spend hours on a screen....

Aibu? What should 12 year olds be doing?!

My soon to be 40 year old husband has a long list of Lego sets he wants for his birthday. Lego is for everyone.

Fedupwithex · 23/01/2020 22:46

@Everythingnotsaved honestly your mum should mind her own business, he enjoys it and it makes him happy. Why this need to make kids stop things because someone else doesn’t like it

Tinkerbelle57 · 23/01/2020 22:59

Lego is great at any age. I have a friend who is 42 who builds and collects Lego and has some fantastic limited edition collections.
Rather Lego than him being on a computer game all night.

Strokethefurrywall · 23/01/2020 23:01

I have, in the past 3 days, admitted that I am a hopeless LEGO freak! I fucking love the stuff!

I realised my pure joy when I spent a hungover Boxing Day building Harry Potter quidditch pitch and a hungover New Year's Day building the hogwarts clock tower with 8 year old DS1. I then remembered the numerous other hungover days when I've returned from a work trip with boxes of LEGO for the kids and I've spent the time building them instead of the DSs!

Soooo, I've admitted my joy and currently have in my amazon basket the Stranger Things upside down, the Tree House and the full 16+ Hogwarts castle. I've also realised that I'm a huge jigsaw puzzle nerd and not a single fuck is given! 😁

Never too old for Lego!!

Get her to watch the Australian series of Lego Masters, one of the teams was a teenage lad and his granny Grin

DS10 lives and breathes lego, it’s the only thing he’s asked for for Christmas and birthday since he was 6.

DD13 has just got the last of the Harry Potter kits she needed, has a big display over 3 shelves of it in her room.

Would love to see pics from those with huge collections/lego rooms!

SisyphusHadItEasy · 24/01/2020 00:30

My 14 and 21 year olds love Lego.

expat101 · 24/01/2020 04:09

I love lego, except when bare feet tread on it...

Bowerbird5 · 24/01/2020 04:15

My dad bought me some in the sixties i’m Not sure who enjoyed it more! It was the only time he really played with me. Crikeys some parents have a lot more to worry about 12 year olds. Let him play with it as long as he wants.

msmith501 · 24/01/2020 05:17

I loved playing with Lego and Meccano (now 55) and they are both great ways to learn about construction and to create all manner of fantastic inventive things. I miss those days.

Makinglemonadeoutoflemons · 24/01/2020 05:20

We are a family of Lego builders, DS2 -12yrs old had Star Wars Lego sets for Christmas & has the one he wants for his birthday, DH (45) had Lego for his birthday too!
Never too old for Lego!

Northernsoulgirl45 · 24/01/2020 05:21

Try tekling dh that.

Ishotmrburns · 24/01/2020 05:27

My DH asked for a Lego sailing ship kit for his 40th birthday.

I think it's wonderful that your 12yo is interested in making things instead of just sitting in front of a screen. Good for him.

beckycharlie · 24/01/2020 05:36

My son is 11 and still loves it! Some of the boxes actually have the age rating of upto 99 years old as it's for all ages.

differentnameforthis · 24/01/2020 06:34

I wanted Lego my whole life as a kid. Never got it.

I will admit to buying my girls certain sets so I could play with admire it.

I love it.

ChasingRainbows19 · 24/01/2020 06:36

I bought my partner Lego architecture

chubbylover78 · 24/01/2020 06:39

The80sweregreat · 24/01/2020 06:48

My sons are in their twenties and they still like Lego ! It's for all ages.
Some of those big Star Wars ones are quite complex to build.
Just nod and smile and let him crack on with it!

Pixxie7 · 24/01/2020 07:02

My SIL is 40 and asks for it every year for Xmas never too old.

Nat6999 · 24/01/2020 07:21

My ds is 16 this weekend, my dining table is currently covered in Lego. He has been building intricate models since he was 7 years old including a hospital with revolving doors, working lifts & 10 floors that he built to play out his worries when his dad was in hospital for nearly a year. He has the Lego Boost & builds the most amazing robots.

Misbeehived · 24/01/2020 07:39

@RedskyAtnight genuine question what are 12 year olds more typically doing? I’d have honesty thought this is a pretty typical activity.

Tildycatpuss · 24/01/2020 08:38

My son still does lego and he's 23. He gets the big Star Wars pieces to build. I am being stitched up to buying him the Death Star model for his Birthday.

RedskyAtnight · 24/01/2020 09:06

Misbeehived I have no idea what 12 year old boys are into these days (I have an older DS). My post was me picking up on a comment made by my SIL at Christmas. She has a Lego obsessed 12 year old and, like OP, whilst she's happy he has a hobby that doesn't involve staring at screens all day, she is concerned that his desire to do nothing except build Lego (and he doesn't even like to build Lego with others - it's very much a solo activity) is cutting him off socially (he is struggling with friendships at school because he doesn't have anything in common with his peers and I guess there is only so much talking about Lego you can do!).

I have no idea whether this is the case for OP's son, but the potential similarity in the situations just struck me!

meyouandlulutoo · 24/01/2020 09:11

Quite a few years ago (before we all had home computers) we built a to scale Lego model of the extension we wanted for our house for the architect. He was really impressed when we showed it to him - and we got exactly what we wanted.

Lego is great at any age.
