My 12 year old still loves Lego especially Star Wars and Ninjago etc. He had a large Star Wars ship for Xmas & still plays with it, reads Lego books etc.

My mother things he’s too old for it (although she hasn’t specified what she thinks he should be doing at 12)

I always thought Lego was for any age to be honest and would rather he played with Lego than spend hours on a screen....

Aibu? What should 12 year olds be doing?!

We went to London Model Engineering exhibition at Alexandra Palace last Friday. It was a case of ‘spot the female’ (irrelevant, I know) but by far the best model was Lego built by ‘brickish’, an adult Lego society. It’s really got my hubby interested again. He is about to retire. My son is an engineer with Avery interesting, responsible (and well paid) job, all sparked off with Lego when he was younger.
Never too old for it. And so much better than the inevitable screens.

Retired65 · 23/01/2020 19:12

My hairdresser loves lego and he is 34.

BeenNeverSeen · 23/01/2020 19:15

My son is 13 & screen obsessed - Xbox, iPad, etc. I would LOVE him to play with Lego! Your mum is BU.

AwkwardAnnie · 23/01/2020 19:17

The boxes say 4-99!
I usually buy myself a cool Lego something for Christmas if I can afford it. A perfect Boxing Day involves building something like Wall-e, or BB-8 while the kids build their own Lego things.
My dad loves Lego too he's 75.

YellowBeryl · 23/01/2020 19:21

My DD - 35- got Lego for Xmas, she loves it. To her it is a 3D jigsaw.

Rose87777 · 23/01/2020 19:24

Yep she is BU.

My high flying city lawyer ex loved Lego. He was in his thirties. Tbh I used to find it a bit bizarre but reading this thread he was clearly not in the minority!

VerbenaGirl · 23/01/2020 19:26

She is bonkers, Lego is great at any age. Long may it continue!

claireyjs · 23/01/2020 19:31

I have plenty of adult friends who collect lego... it's a perfectly acceptable hobby and much better than staying up gaming all night. Good for him!

mrshousty · 23/01/2020 19:32

Hello!!!

It's says on the box - up to 99 years old. Tell her she's too old!!!

My sister is 38 and loves her lego. Google benefits of using Lego

Me, my DH, DS11 and DD7 all have our own Lego. My dad even has Lego. You are never too old for Lego! It is a relaxing and creative thing to do. You can get creative and build whatever you want without instructions which is great for fostering creativity and technical skills at any age or you can build following instructions with is relaxing and good for mental health because you aren't thinking about the stress of X bill or revising for Y test or a fight with a friend, you're just thinking about building Lego. Lego is for everyone. Just like colouring and crafts.

MurphyDog5 · 23/01/2020 19:47

My 65 year old Father obviously didn’t get the memo!

Jack80 · 23/01/2020 19:50

Leave him be, if he likes Lego then fine

Dearover · 23/01/2020 19:52

I'm building up to start my Yoda.

Sj802580 · 23/01/2020 20:00

I think it’s brilliant.. my son is 13 and addicted to his Xbox. I would much rather he loved Lego!

hertoehurts · 23/01/2020 20:20

My son is 18 and that’s all he wanted for his Birthday and Christmas! He loves it, he spends all his wages on it. You’re never too old for Lego!

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 23/01/2020 20:28

I 5% buy Lego for my son, and 95% buy it because I love building it!!

Lego has evolved so much, we are using the AR stuff at the minute and have also built the batmobile RC car 👌

Mummy2one2016 · 23/01/2020 21:00

My son is just at the lego stage. It's great I'm nearly 30 and still lego is the best thing ever. Some of the new sets are amazing. No one is ever to old for lego.

Icepinkeskimo · 23/01/2020 21:35

OP why not buy your mother a box of Lego Architecture and ask her to build the building on the front of the box.

See if she thinks then that Lego is for young children 🤣🤣🤣

We use Lego at least twice a week at work, in a professional capacity. Take not one second of notice to your mothers comments, what an ill informed remark she spouted.

DoAllMeerkatsComeFromRussia · 23/01/2020 21:36

12- perfectly normal. Both my boys were very much into Lego at 12 but to be fair it dropped off fairly quickly after that age as they got more interested in other things. Peer pressure may contribute a little as well. DS2, now 16, still has all his Lego sets displayed in his room though and is thinking of getting again a set that he played with to death when he was about 8 but has lost part of and he feels he has unfinished business with iycwim.

Chocrock · 23/01/2020 22:15

Tell her to mind her own business. As you said Lego is a much better hobby than computer games in every way.
I hope your son hasn’t heard her say this.

masterblaster · 23/01/2020 22:19

If your mother thinks normal lego is too childish, she should get him a mixed bucket of technic lego off ebay.

It's quite astounding someone would think that lego is purely for kids. My son learned how to read engineering diagrams from it.

TriciaH87 · 23/01/2020 22:26

My boys 13 still uses it his uncles 36 still uses it never too old

kayteep · 23/01/2020 22:28
