About comments regarding my 12 year old son and lego

My 12 year old still loves Lego especially Star Wars and Ninjago etc. He had a large Star Wars ship for Xmas & still plays with it, reads Lego books etc.

My mother things he’s too old for it (although she hasn’t specified what she thinks he should be doing at 12)

I always thought Lego was for any age to be honest and would rather he played with Lego than spend hours on a screen....

Aibu? What should 12 year olds be doing?!

Lego is for any age - there is now an 'adult range' available - get some for your mum. It's about construction and design - skills you just grow better at, not to old for!

mummytraveller · 23/01/2020 17:35

I'm 25.. yes I have a 6yr old DD but I play with it at lego club too! I build my house, she builds hers and then we work out how to combine them, never too old

RachelBlue · 23/01/2020 17:35

I'll be sad when I'm 100 and too old for Lego! I actually just got rebitten by the Lego bug.

My 3 year old has just got some, and I made a large model of a local landmark!

Chottie · 23/01/2020 17:36

OP -A neighbour's DS is studying aerospace engineering at a redbrick UK university and there is a lego room which is part of the course.

impossible · 23/01/2020 17:39

Ignore dm. And be glad he still plays it. What a nice thing to do.

Gwilt160981 · 23/01/2020 17:40

Everyone loves Lego. My hubby got a Ghostbusters Lego set from London and built it up with the ecto1 and the 4 characters and it's awesome. Ignore your mom on this one.

caringcarer · 23/01/2020 17:44

My adult ds bought himself a huge lego set for Xmas. His present to himself. Did Dad will borrow it from to make after him. They take in turns to buy these enourmous sets of Lego. 13 year old foster son loves Ninjargo. Your son does not have a problem, your Mum does.

tierdytierd · 23/01/2020 17:57

I’ve never liked it.... but my son loves it and now I do to😁 he loves nothing more than he and I sat building the sets which he quickly dismantles and creates what he fancies!
I know adults who love it too! Never too old for lego and as you’ve said heaps better than bn day infront of a screen! And tbh if he’s happy then why not!
Get your mum to get involved with Lego with him and if she doesn’t ‘get it’ laugh At the next comment and tell her to focus on something of importance x

M2B19 · 23/01/2020 17:58

Please don’t tell my husband there’s an age limit on Lego Grin he loves it

filka · 23/01/2020 18:07

What should 12 year olds be doing?!.....Lego

Definitely don't let them start too soon on computers, game systems, mobile phones. Stick to Lego as long as possible!

Localocal · 23/01/2020 18:09

Your mother is being absurd. Grown men still love Lego. My sixteen year old played with his Lego every day until about a year ago and still does occasionally. He has a girlfriend and a beard, but just last week he had the Ninjago guys out battling the Star Wars guys. It's brilliant. He is the only one of my kids who has never had to be peeled off a screen, because he had Lego instead. Tell your mum it's better than fighting over whether he can play Overwatch. Lego is good for his soul and nothing else matters.

On a side note, my son found lots of other Lego obsessives at secondary school and they were very happy.

Oscarsdaddy · 23/01/2020 18:09

Absolutely nothing wrong with a 12 year old loving Lego
Long may his love of it continue, far better for him that sitting for hours & hours in front of a gaming console

Carpedimum · 23/01/2020 18:24

I guess we’re a slightly geeky family but we all love Lego! It is truly one of the best toys ever invented. If your mother needs to understand its value more then put it in the context of: fine motor skills; 3d visualisation; problem solving; design interpretation; imagination; determination & tenacity; creativity & enormous pride! Plus if she’s mercenary, some sets & figures are very highly collectible!

Commonwasher · 23/01/2020 18:29

I got the Lego ‘Friends’ coffee house set for Christmas Smile Your mother should wind her neck in.

CountryGirl1234 · 23/01/2020 18:31

My partner was the same loved his Lego still does if he had a room for it, he doesn’t have the space. Fairly outdoors and does his own thing, let him play!

Rockhopper10 · 23/01/2020 18:34

My daughter is 12 and absolutely passionate about Lego. Got a Harry Potter kit for Christmas. She's quite a streetwise girl, and also into the usual 12-13 year-old girl stuff. Couldn't be more delighted that she still loves Lego.

SimonJT · 23/01/2020 18:34

Started my birthday lego at about 8pm last night, finished at 11pmish, best night ever!

JassyRadlett · 23/01/2020 18:36

@SimonJT you aren’t allowed to do that without saying which set!

(I have a Great Wall of China still awaiting me.)

ThisMumisaMan · 23/01/2020 18:56

I'm 42 and haven't grown out of Lego yet!

coffeeandpyjamas · 23/01/2020 18:56

My dad is 72 & loves LEGO! Has far too much of it but never gets tired of playing with it! There is no maximum age so tell your mum to keep her comments to herself!
