About comments regarding my 12 year old son and lego

My 12 year old still loves Lego especially Star Wars and Ninjago etc. He had a large Star Wars ship for Xmas & still plays with it, reads Lego books etc.

My mother things he’s too old for it (although she hasn’t specified what she thinks he should be doing at 12)

I always thought Lego was for any age to be honest and would rather he played with Lego than spend hours on a screen....

Aibu? What should 12 year olds be doing?!

I love Lego...although not when I step on it!

Casscass1986 · 22/01/2020 21:47

My son was desperate for the collectors edition of the Millennium Falcon for Christmas. We caved and bought it for him. He is a 21 years old, at university and still loves Lego!

LondonJax · 22/01/2020 21:59

Tell her to go to BrickLive. It's a huge event for Lego enthusiasts of all ages.

We took DS a few years ago and you'd be surprised at the number of very grown men debating whether a particular brick was better as the base for a certain structure than another.

My cousin was in raptures a couple of Christmases ago when she got an R2D2 lego set from her fiance - £300 plus (I can think of better things to buy with the money but she was happy and that's the point).

AwesomeMixTapeVol1 · 22/01/2020 22:17

Definitely Lego for all ages. Family of 4, 2 adults & 2 children. All four of us got something Lego for Christmas (I got Slave 1 Grin)

Noodledoodledoo · 22/01/2020 22:28

The adults in my house have more lego than the kids! My nephew is 12 and most of his presents were lego.

Loads of lego is for 12 + or 16 +

Sunnyskies111 · 22/01/2020 22:30

I know adults who collect lego and do the building packs, I think they then glue the bits together (may be wrong) and display them, or store them. Much like one would do with an airfix. Perfectly normal adults with normal lives, we all have hobbies. 12 is fine, I still played with toys especially dolls house/ sylvanian families type things well into my teenage years

chocolateteapot20 · 22/01/2020 22:51

I had some fabulous work coaching sessions several years ago from a super-clever engineer who was well into their 40s which used Lego. It was brilliant for working out where the blocks were in a particular situation.

And lots of my former colleagues, many of whom are frighteningly clever sciencey types, got Lego for Christmas. One of them got Yoda for Christmas. I'm in my early 50s and I was very jealous. Wink No one is EVER too old for Lego.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 22/01/2020 22:59

Me and DH regularly buy each other Lego for birthday/Xmas. Love my Campavan!

CherryPavlova · 22/01/2020 23:02

My son always gets a Lego item in his stocking. He’s in his twenties.

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/01/2020 23:05

Your Mum is being ridiculous. Many Lego sets are produced for adults and indeed the age range on the Classic boxes goes up to 99! I know many adults that love it and when I took my son to a Brick Live show, there were way more adults than kids! What a weird thing to say. Take no notice!

AgentCooper · 22/01/2020 23:08

She’s talking out her bum. I love Lego and I’m 34! I built Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater out of Lego and it remains one of my proudest achievements Wink

Serin · 22/01/2020 23:12

WTH? Was your mum like this with you when you were growing up? Who is she to specify what interests your child has.
I'm completely befuddled by her remarks and can only imagine that she is confusing Lego with duplo??

discusstin · 22/01/2020 23:12

My 13 year old DS loves it!

Sistersofpercy · 22/01/2020 23:14

I'd love the death star but I'm pretty good at knocking Bits off when I dust.
DH bought me the steam boat willie set last year which is adorable and we are picking up the architecture sets of the places that mean things to us.

Not sure @DillBaby would like our home either 😂

FreshStart01 · 22/01/2020 23:14

Quite right too, by 12 he should be sat semi-comatosed in front of a screen instead. Not stimulating his brain by building stuff.

SoMuchToBits · 22/01/2020 23:26

There is no age limit on Lego! Nor on Playmobil for that matter. My ds played with Playmobil until he was 15, and now I seem to have taken over his collection and play with it myself (and add to it). He also had Lego until he was about 12, and loved it.

He's now 19 but I expect if he had a Lego set in front of him now he would enjoy using it.

JassyRadlett · 23/01/2020 08:30

@Sistersofpercy the Death Star is surprisingly resilient. DS1 saved up for a year for it and his 4 year old brother plays with it regularly and it’s survived pretty unscathed.

I don’t even like Star Wars and I think it’s brilliant. So much tiny detail and so playable.

Onescaredmuma · 23/01/2020 08:33

Definitely not too old at 12. I want the hogwarts castle one I'm 34 unfortunately there is no was I can afford it!

ChocChipWookie · 23/01/2020 11:14

the Death Star is surprisingly resilient

@JassyRadlett It's also quite expensive, DH wants the big Falcon as well but tbh unless they come at bargain prices I tend to put my money into life-size toys. I bought an R2D2 last week Blush

SistersOfPercy · 23/01/2020 11:14

Whoops, I name changed again after I posted that!!

JassyRadlett · 23/01/2020 14:41

It is INSANELY expensive. DS1 saved like mad - spends from the school fair, Christmas and birthday money, pocket money, doing extra jobs - for ages. When he got to £300 I took pity on him.

It’s survived a year so far and is still intact!

beethebee · 23/01/2020 17:27

My DS 12 doesn't really play with other toys anymore but loves lego. He and I build it together sometimes and have 'battles'. It's great fun.

I think the box used to say age 3-103 or something. Get some for your DM Grin

BlueJava · 23/01/2020 17:29

She's completely unreasonable - there is no upper age limit to Lego! My Dad loves it, he's 89! I have a friend who's in his 40's he spends tons of money on it too. At 12 he should be encouraged not put off doing something constructive!

clarehhh · 23/01/2020 17:30

Ignore her , if he stopped and did something else she would probably moan about that too!

Pop2017 · 23/01/2020 17:31

Most definitely not too old! Even adults love Lego!
