To buy hideous shoes that DD loves

?My DD is three and loves purple and sparkles. While looking for new shoes together she spotted these and she really wants them. The last ones she had were pink sparkle converse and I was fine with them but her Dad hates them and complains and makes comments any time she has them on 😡 it really annoys me. I think she should allowed to have an input and wear things she likes but he thinks she's too young and she should wear what she's told. So do you buy your kids clothes that you like or clothes that they like?

Buy them she will have years wearing polyester that feels like cardboard which masquerades as a school uniform but is in reality some terribly cruel punishment inflicted on girls to require them to wear the lowest common denominator in clothing (ie a group of cruel teachers sit around cackling as they select the school uniform that is guaranteed to look good on absolutely nobody)....

Ruralretreating · 21/01/2020 22:38

Buy them! Would much rather see a three year old in those which look sensibly supportive around the ankle than some strappy shoes inappropriate for running, jumping and climbing!

BanSprouts · 21/01/2020 22:40

They are so adorable! If she likes them and they are going to be comfortable for her then I'd definitely buy them.

ReginaGeorgeous · 21/01/2020 22:44

They are adorable! My four year old would love them (she's currently got a pair of pink unicorn converse).

Goldenbear · 21/01/2020 22:49

My DD is 8 but has always been very opinionated on what she should be wearing from about 15 months (no joke). Around 4, 5 and 6 she would wear striking combinations of clothes. She's always been interested in the design of things, she draws fashion designs and went with her Dad recently to the haberdashers to buy material to make clothes for her Sylvanian families. She is definitely very active and capable regardless of whether her shoes have sparkle on them. She doesn't want to climb trees and would not choose a pair of 'boys' shoes for practical reasons but has certainly looked at some for aesthetic reasons. I think there is a value in asserting your preferences that are demonstrative of a strong character that knows their own mind. How is a such boldness holding a child back?

hellcarryingahandbag · 21/01/2020 22:51

They are fabulous! Does he want her to wear tan orthopaedic brogues? Tell him to FOTTFSOFTFOSM!

Shimy · 21/01/2020 22:56

How could anyone not buy those for a 3yr old 😍who is dying to have them? Pls pls buy them for her. That kids got style!

Mischance · 21/01/2020 22:56

Many years ago my DD wanted to write to Jim'll Fix It - this was Jimmy Saville before we know what we all know now - gulp. She said she wanted to be a bridesmaid for a day so that she could wear some shiny shoes. I took her out to get what she wanted!..........plum patent with ankle strap - she LOVED them!!!

Shimy · 21/01/2020 22:57

tan orthopaedic brogues GrinGrin

JaniceBattersby, my DD does not want to play football, has been offered the chance to do so, has been around her older brother wanting her to join in, has been asked to join a club by a friend but she simply will not, she is certainly not inhibited, she just isn't interested! At 8 she detests all Princess stuff and is very clear about that as well!

Eveting2019 · 21/01/2020 23:00

they are fun, and joyful.
I wouldn’t take what your ex says seriously.
Black vans for a young girl? I really don’t think toddlers need ‘cool’ shoes. They don’t need brands. Nor dark, sleek colours. Vans are not even supportive shoes.

RhodaCamel · 22/01/2020 08:16

They are gorgeous and just the sort of thing I would have put my dd in at that age. She is now almost 12 and has her own ideas these days.
Count yourself lucky as these are the shoes dd is currently badgering me for (they are beyond hideous and with that price tag, it is never going to happen!!)

My dd wanted these and got these Grin
Maybe you should buy a pair to go with the sparkly trainers when he takes her out...

They are lovely shoes. I'm 53 and have a pair of glittery DM's. They cheer me up whenever I wear them 🙂

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 22/01/2020 08:49

They’re just fine! Sensible enough for her to run around in, and if she loves the colour, then all is well.

avocadotofu · 22/01/2020 08:50

She's three and I agree with you she should definitely have a say in what she wears.

DrivingMsCrazy · 22/01/2020 08:52

I'm in my 50s and I like them! So glad you got them for her.

On a slightly more serious note, OP, you may want to google narcissism. I know it's bandied around on here an awful lot but your sentence about your OH "not knowing why everyone doesn't like what he likes" or words to that effect really rang alarm bells for me. If he genuinely can't see that other people have opinions likes and dislikes seperate from his, that's a huge issue! Or that your DD is a seperate person with her own tastes and not merely a reflection of his.

Or he's just the next Victor Meldrew.
Either way, not attractive in a partner!!

BlackBlueBell · 22/01/2020 08:55

They’re adorable! And as long as they are suitable for purpose you should definitely let dd have a say, she’s the one wearing them after all. My mum bought me a pair of yellow sandals when I was young, I must have been around 5, she thought they were lovely but I absolutely hated them and avoided wearing them at all costs.

DeadButDelicious · 22/01/2020 08:56

They are super cute!

If I can get shoes on my 3 year old right now I take it as a massive win Grin she has some very definite opinions about what she will and will not put on her feet at the moment.

CaptainButtock · 22/01/2020 09:06

They’re cute and look practical to me. (I was expecting a proper monstrosity in the style of the Gucci sandals thread the other day...)

Damntheman · 22/01/2020 09:19

Glad you got them for her OP, they're gorgeous! I now have to go buy some for my 3 year old who will be PSYCHED.

pumpandthump · 22/01/2020 09:42

I buy what DS likes (he's 4). Firstly I think he should have choice over what he wears. Admittedly this means some seriously questionable fashion choices but as long as it's weather appropriate I don't care, and secondly it saves battles. There are obvious exceptions (school uniform etc) but on the whole I believe in allowing them to choose. I sometimes limit what those choices are (e.g. price).

Urkiddingright · 22/01/2020 09:55

I think they’re cute and I usually hate glitter.

Rubyupbeat · 22/01/2020 09:55

3 is not too young to choose. Obviously if it were something totally unsuitable, too old etc..... then yes, but they love a bit of sparkle.
I remember my niece was so happy in dungarees and trainers and my sister was so relieved as she hated all that pink girly stuff, but when my niece started nursery she saw the other little ones in pink's and fluffys, and that was it. She particularly loved lelli Kelli trainers and boots, they are probably the most hideous footwear next to crocs and uggs, but they made her so happy.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 22/01/2020 10:02

Love those shoes! Looks more sensible than a lot of children’s shoes. Let your dd wear them and enjoy them.

Yesterday I saw an old lady who could barely walk with a frame but she was wearing rainbow sequined trainers. Respect! Grin
