To buy hideous shoes that DD loves

mamamilkmachine · 21/01/2020 18:40

?My DD is three and loves purple and sparkles. While looking for new shoes together she spotted these and she really wants them. The last ones she had were pink sparkle converse and I was fine with them but her Dad hates them and complains and makes comments any time she has them on 😡 it really annoys me. I think she should allowed to have an input and wear things she likes but he thinks she's too young and she should wear what she's told. So do you buy your kids clothes that you like or clothes that they like?

If he can choose her shoes presumably she can choose his? Why not get her to do a drawing designing the shoes she would choose for daddy. He might see how ridiculous he is being then.

mamamilkmachine · 21/01/2020 19:59

@Yabadee I am now tempted to buy them in the next size up 🤦‍♀️

We bought shoes for my daughter she asked for as a birthday gift. I was against them, she adores them and still does. They have grown on me and everywhere we go people admire them. Best purchase we ever made.

They’re cute and it’s great she’s having an input. Her dad is being mean

AcrobaticCardigan · 21/01/2020 20:00

OMG - they are adorable! Might have to buy them for my DD!

overnightangel · 21/01/2020 20:02

Surely they’re exactly what a 3 yr old should be wearing , they’re lovely Smile

Maxineputyourredshoeson · 21/01/2020 20:03

I’m glad you got them for her OP.

I don’t see anything wrong with them but my youngest DD has worn some weird and wonderful shite over the years. At 7 she is still a huge fan of her sparkly shoes. DD1 has her own taste and has a pair of design your own converse that we got her for Christmas that are not my choice but meh, I don’t have to wear them.

DH was never a fan of lots of sparkles but with youngest DD even he’s learned to go with the flow Grin

JaniceBattersby · 21/01/2020 20:04

I like them but they’re incredibly impractical. What if it rains or she jumps in the mud.
My DS is just turned 3 and would completely wreck these in about 5 minutes.

Generally I’m against buying little girls light coloured and frilly clothing as I think it inhibits them from climbing and scooting and playing football for fear of destroying their clothes from a very young age. Little boys don’t have any of these obstacles put in their way. Their clothing is often hardier and dark coloured. The idea of putting my youngest in patent shoes, for example, is laughable to me and yet all the ‘girls’’ shoes in Clarks are patent. How can they scoot in those?!

mamamilkmachine · 21/01/2020 20:04

I want to change the title 😂 it should say AIBU to buy shoes that my DD loves but her fun sucker Dad hates Grin they aren't hideous but I just know he will hate them. Her first trainers were flashing sparkle ones from Clark's and he would complain about having to come out with us if she had them on!

Those shoes are lovely x

GirlsInGreen · 21/01/2020 20:07

Aww that's great OP! So happy dd got her sparkly shoes! I remember one roasting hot summer trying to prise bright red wellies off dd - to no avail. Gotta pick your battlesGrin

mamamilkmachine · 21/01/2020 20:08

Just for clarity when it rains she wears her lovely unicorn wellington boots, so she can jump in puddles, get muddy etc but she does know (as peppa says) if you jump in muddy puddles you must wear your boots. They will mainly be worn for nursery as she's there 4 days a week.

They're ace!!!! My DD loves sketchers twinkle toes... They're colourful, sparkley and have flashing lights (and memory foam inside so comfortable to wear)
Also had some sketchers sprinkle toes which looked like icing and sprinkles on the toes.

My DD as a toddler fell in love with some white superhero trainers with flashing lights...they were so tacky but he loved them so I had to swallow my pride and buy him them. He still loves them when he outgrew them so got them in the next size (pfft who needs smart boots in winter hey!!)

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/01/2020 20:11

My dd is the same op. I’ve learnt to go with what she wants - as long as the purchase is in budget, fits correctly and is fit for purpose. She is also the same with clothes. The “trick” of giving her 2 choices of clothes for the day never worked and she has very exacting standards for her appearance. She’s 11 now so it’s all about brands....

RAINSh0wers · 21/01/2020 20:12

@JaniceBattersby my DD has patent shoes for school, she scoots there and back just fine. She used her brakes to stop, not her shoes! If we go to the woods she has wellies for running in the mud and climbing trees. If we’re going to a birthday party in a hall, or to the cinema, or bowling she’s just fine in sparkly trainers. It’s really not a big problem!

PattiPrice · 21/01/2020 20:14

I would have picked 2 or 3 pairs I thought suitable and let them choose from the selection to give them the feeling of having a choice

This is what I used do as well.

In hindsight though, I was far too interested in what my children wore when they were very small. I'm sorry now that I didn't let them just wear what they wanted to wear (within reason).

GummyGoddess · 21/01/2020 20:14

I always let my DC choose their shoes as they are more likely to wear them. My 1.5 year old boy is currently sporting some sparkly pink holographic ankle boots, while his 3 year old brother has some extremely sensible looking suede converse. If they're happy then I'm happy.

WombOfOnesOwn · 21/01/2020 20:15

I love these shoes, but then again, my sons both wear sparkly shiny shoes as well.

letmebefrank · 21/01/2020 20:17

Wait, you're not even 'with' your DH and he's still trying to call the shots on footwear you're buying her?

Glad you've ordered them. Perfect shoes for a 3 year old who will love them.

SuperDuperJezebel · 21/01/2020 20:17

@mamamilkmachine my almost 3yo DD has the same next glitter shoes, in a greeny blue colour, she gets loads of compliments and they go through the washing machine!

scarbados · 21/01/2020 20:17

Purple sparkly trainers are the whole point of being 3 years old. Let her have them!

These are very cute too.

One thing I have noticed with Next though is the interior of their own branded shoes are made from little more than cardboard! Not so bad for temporary summer shoes but very cold for Winter and rainy weather. That said my daughter has a pair of Next boots and got quite a lot of wear out of them before the zips got too lose. Her feet often got wet when it rained though as the rain soaked through the top part of them.

AmelieTaylor · 21/01/2020 20:23

Her first trainers were flashing sparkle ones from Clark's and he would complain about having to come out with us if she had them on!

Jesus. - what made you think ‘trying again’ was a good idea?? He’s... well, let’s just say he’s not someone I’d choose to live with

I have some delightful pictures of the dreaded lelli Kelly’s with all kinds of random clothing.

If you can’t be a bit ‘funky’ when you’re 3, when can you?!

Besides, they’re pretty tame. I was expecting them to be WAY brighter.

Squidgoals · 21/01/2020 20:24

If you can't wear purple sparkly shoes when you're three when can you?
Word of warning - I once bought my DDs pink shoes that their dad (my ex) didn't like and they very conveniently 'got lost' in the black hole that was his house

StripyHorse · 21/01/2020 20:26

With hindsight I was a bit gutted about the navy / black clarks shoes I bought DD1 when she was a toddler thinking they were practical at the time... once she got to school age and needed black I realised I should have gone for the pretty styles. DD2 had more variety!!

In other words.... go for it! As long as they are comfy, practical and in budget.
