To buy hideous shoes that DD loves

?My DD is three and loves purple and sparkles. While looking for new shoes together she spotted these and she really wants them. The last ones she had were pink sparkle converse and I was fine with them but her Dad hates them and complains and makes comments any time she has them on 😡 it really annoys me. I think she should allowed to have an input and wear things she likes but he thinks she's too young and she should wear what she's told. So do you buy your kids clothes that you like or clothes that they like?

They are cute. I’m sure you’ll have trouble getting her to take them off. 😂

PigletJohn · 21/01/2020 19:18

It will be good practice for you both to get used to not liking DDs taste in clothes and shoes. You have another twenty years.

Miljea · 21/01/2020 19:19

They're sweet. I wouldn't always let a 'confident' young person to dictate everything they wanted to wear- school uniform might prove a challenge!

But I can see how such shoes could be used as a bargaining chip, when teaching your child the art of compromise. I'm thinking 'You can wear these shoes this morning, but only if you don't make a fuss about the others later'. She may still, but a think a bit of choice is good.

Letthemysterybe · 21/01/2020 19:19

I love the fact that my 3 year old has an opinion on her outfits, and if she wants to wear her dinosaur onesie and spotty wellies all day I let her! They have a long time ahead of them of feeling the pressure to conform or wear sensible clothes, so it’s good that’s they get the chance to wear whatever crazy stuff they want while they can.

Gogolego · 21/01/2020 19:19

They're adorable . Do they do them in adult sizes?

BreconBeBuggered · 21/01/2020 19:20

I thought they were going to be comically gross. Those are fine and look nice and comfy too. What's your issue with them? Does her father think he should have the last word on this?

Ted27 · 21/01/2020 19:20

I'm 55 and saving up for a pair of purple sparkly Doc Martens.

If I were three I'd want them, she has 12 years of boring black school shoes ahead of her, nothing wrong with having some fun with your shoes

paisley256 · 21/01/2020 19:20

They're gorgeous

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 21/01/2020 19:21

If things are within budget and comfy then I buy things they like. I also let them wear whatever they like provided it's weather and activity appropriate (eg not a long dress for riding a bike). I think it's one of the lovely things about young kids that they don't care about fashion or what other people think of them, they wear colourful outfits that they like. Also I've found that imposing my choice on their trainers results in them wanting to wear wellies all the time in winter or sandals all summer. Not worth the hassle. I think your husband is being a kill joy.
Only thing I wont buy them is expensive items like a winter coat, where they are character branded, incase they go off them

mytypeonpaper · 21/01/2020 19:21

They're sooooo cute!

adviceneededon · 21/01/2020 19:23

If he doesn't like them, get ready when she takes a shine to Sketchers. They're sparkly...and they light up! My 8yo goes through 4 pairs a year Grin

myself2020 · 21/01/2020 19:24

I wouldn’t buy them as they are not fit for purpose for a 3 year old (they’ll be soaked through the moment it rains, and will look horrible if they get muddy)

ToTheRegimentIWishIWasThere · 21/01/2020 19:25

My 3 yo spends most of his time being spiderman/Batman/postman Pat/fireman Sam/a llama.

If you can't be whimsical and have daft shoes when you're three, when can you?!

tjk10 · 21/01/2020 19:25

I would let her wear them children are little for such a short time let her enjoy them. My daughter is a teen now and wouldn't be seen dead in anything cute and sparkly Sad I miss the cute little sparkly shoe days. Enjoy. X

Ladyratterley · 21/01/2020 19:26

Awww, they are cute! Why’s your DP being a nob?!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 21/01/2020 19:27

I think for a child of that age you chose price, practicality and comfort and they choose colour/embellishments. Her dad is being silly.

mamamilkmachine · 21/01/2020 19:27

Thanks everyone 😁 and your all very right about her Dad...I find it controlling and that's what annoys me. He says clothes don't always have to be fun they can just be normal and nice. Sparkling shoes on a 3 year old girl are normal and nice. He bought her black vans which I like but it's a fight to get her to wear them. I think she should be able to wear what style she likes..... as long as its appropriate as other posters have said.

Those are very sensible shoes!! I don’t understand her dad’s problem?! And at 3 you’ll get 6 months wear out of them at best. I hope you’ve ordered them for her!!

BlueMoon1103 · 21/01/2020 19:30

Why wouldn’t you let? Not very good for teaching individuality if you don’t let her choose her own shoes Hmm

I agree with you, they’re sensible, they’re perfectly suitable for a 3 year old, she should be able to have whichever (fit for purpose) shoes she likes!

npowerarebastards · 21/01/2020 19:30

Lovely. Who cares what a three year old wears anyway! Soon enough she'll be refusing to wear anything but pink dresses. Without tights or a cardigan. And with crocs. In January. Take it from me...

DD (now 14) and most of friends went through a sparkly shoes phase. We ended up buying about three pairs as her feet grew - two silver and one red, I recall. They were known as "sparklies" in our house, as in, "DD, we're leaving now, go and put on your sparklies!"

Just let her have them and hope that she doesn't also enter a "princess" phase...DD practically lived in a Disney Princess costume one summer, I had to wash it at night as she'd put it on over her clothes every single day (and I don't like princessy stuff, never encouraged it, but the dress was a gift). Grin

zzzzzzzx · 21/01/2020 19:33

I like them. She's going to look so cute!

Yabadee · 21/01/2020 19:33

I can see them, my dd would love them.

She currently has pink sequin, sparkly, light up sketchers they are gorgeous, I’d love a pair in my size. Think they were only 28 quid in the sale at schuh too, have a look for them and really wind her dad up

JagerPlease · 21/01/2020 19:34

My DS is also 3 and has similar shoes! My rule is provided they're practical, he can have whatever design he wants. He tends to like girls shoes as they're brighter and have glitter. I draw the line at flimsy pumps but trainers and boots are fine. And I'm also totally jealous of most of his shoes and wish they did them in my size!
