Do you have any where you live, or any local urban legends?

The closest town to myself there was a man who drove round on a mobility scooter with 4 or 5 real life owls sat with him... He would stop and let people have pics with him and all sorts.

It wasn't done as a one off or charity, he just liked to takes his owls out I guess.

@stepitupjuan we're VERY local to each other - Omar! Also I have met Purple Aki personally!

backinthebox · 14/01/2020 00:35

I was also in the pub when Oprah called to speak to the landlord (who is not a famous man but Oprah had a need to chat to him on air about something 😉.

stepitupjuan · 14/01/2020 00:38

@Bamalaz, I've never seen Purple Aki in person but know many who have! Do you also know of John Conteh's brother (presuming that story is true). I saw Omar not long ago in pink pants and a white shirt Smile

augustusglupe · 14/01/2020 00:48

Wayne & Coleen and Jim McDonald...so he does..

Bamalaz · 14/01/2020 00:52

@stepitupjuan I don't know the story of John Conteh's brother? Enlighten me, please! It's been a while since I've seen Omar, I remember he used to frequent Esperanto's a lot 😁

managedmis · 14/01/2020 00:54

Stan the man

Not sure how he looks in winter

HeddaGarbled · 14/01/2020 00:59

Man who waits outside all royal events in a Union Jack suit and is often interviewed by reporters because they’ve got to do something while they’re waiting for the wedding/birth/whatever. Once had his Union Jack sleeping bag stolen which made the nationals. Multiple campaigns in local town including one about the closure of public toilets which necessitated him frequenting town centre on Saturdays with a toilet seat.

stepitupjuan · 14/01/2020 01:08

@Bamalaz, there was a chap until maybe a year ago used to beg on South Road. He visited the known drug house on Mount Pleasant. Rumour has it he was John's brother, used to drive him around. Not seen him in at least a year.

Ah bring back Esperantos! Omar was coming out of 'Spoons when I last saw him Smile

Indella · 14/01/2020 01:08

I live in the same town as a premier league footballer. See him driving around every now and again but have never met him. Those who have say he’s obnoxious so probably best.

stepitupjuan · 14/01/2020 01:13

My son was sat opposite the ethereal being that is Jürgen Klopp on the local line train out of Liverpool. Not wanting to disturb Herr Klopp's downtime and blow his baseball capped vague disguise, my lad smiled knowingly and got a lovely wink back 🏆

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/01/2020 01:38

Have a proper full on celeb/actor/luvvie round here. I was at school with them. Cant name them as it would totally give away where I live (sadly!)

There is also someone who was on BGT and did (I am told) well-ish. I wouldnt know them if they bit me on the arse so cant name them, but I do know that they go to the local shop and spends hundreds at a time clearing them out of scratch cards and takes at least one trip a year to Vegas, and not to perform. My friend works there which is how I know :o

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/01/2020 01:39

Friend works at the shop, not Vegas!

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/01/2020 01:43

Local celebs however....

One guy who you would think is Tom Jones according to the local paper. Not a bad singer and does a lot of charidee, but honestly I expect to see him in the honours list the way they go on about him! He does have a tendency to walk into places with that "Is anyone looking at me? Do they recognise me" strut.

PentreBachCymraeg · 14/01/2020 01:53

@chocolateneededrn

I definitely know where that is 😁

Sparkle2020 · 14/01/2020 02:25

Does beatboxing Spider-Man count?

We used to have a man of no fixed abode who cross dressed - thing was, he must have been in his 50s at least and he didn't dress as a woman of the same age, but more like a teenage girl. His hot pants really were a sight to behold. He had a bike that he wheeled everywhere (never ever saw him riding it), reportedly flashed girls in the park from time to time and sometimes slept overnight in clothes recycling banks. He moved on a few years ago, though.

We also have a very glamorous older lady who dresses every single day in a huge black heavy crinoline skirt (with bustle), black ornate bodice-top and a black feathery hat/fascinator. She looks just like one of the people on the old traditional Quality Street tins, like she should be grinding a barrel organ with a dancing monkey on her shoulder Grin

We also have a senior member of the Cabinet who has his constituency here. I saw him half-heartedly (very safe seat) lurking outside Asda just before the election doing an open surgery/meet-and-greet and surrounded by a throng of, ooh, maybe four people (I think a couple of them were his lackeys). I didn't go over to him, but there was an A-board saying that he was very happy to answer questions, so I was very tempted to go and ask him if he knew whether sprouts were still on BOGOF!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/01/2020 03:05

I used to live near Nottingham a long time ago and it was home to one of my favourite local celebrities of all - he died 15 years ago, but he has his own Wikipedia page!

His name was Frank Robinson, but everybody just knew him as Xylophone Man. This old bloke who 'busked' with a toddler's toy instrument and tunelessly bashed a few notes now and again. He was much loved - mainly for his charm and his cheeky smile rather than his musical prowess.

LawnsLT · 14/01/2020 03:26

We have tattoo John round here, a homeless guy (I believe by his own accord) who always had one on the lip and a can of cider - I think recently passed away. Tattoo John always gets mentioned in conversation though for no other reason then always being in town

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/01/2020 03:45

We used to have a man called Snowy who stood in the town centre collectng money for Guide Dogs. He wore an outfit a bit like a Beefeater and had a top hat. He had whit mice that ran around the rim.of the hat and a cat which sat on the top. He played instruments as a "one man band" and everyone local knew him.

When he died a statue of him was erected in th market square. It was very controversial because lots of people thought the money spent on the statue should go to charity. Plus statue is an "interpretation" of him rather than a realistic representation.

stripesand · 14/01/2020 07:17

@EmmaGrundyForPM I remember Snowy and the statue is certainly interesting - but lovely that it is there.

We have a guy who 'dances' puppets and sings badly to a tape recorder.

QueenOfCatan · 14/01/2020 07:21

There is a guy who drives his scooter around with a trailer attached that has a coffin and skeleton, the skeleton is dressed up too. Its fantastic, always puts a smile on my face to see him!

SimonJT · 14/01/2020 07:27

Lots around here.

My neighbour is a fairly well known actor who has very sticky out ears, I used to play rugby with his boyfriend.

I used to live with a ‘celeb’.

We have a few interesting local people as well. The canal screamer is well known and very very annoying at times.
