Do you have any where you live, or any local urban legends?

The closest town to myself there was a man who drove round on a mobility scooter with 4 or 5 real life owls sat with him... He would stop and let people have pics with him and all sorts.

It wasn't done as a one off or charity, he just liked to takes his owls out I guess.

I lived in same street as Michael Cashman from Eastenders and Danny Boyle. Peaches Geldof was not far away and used to frequent the local Starbucks with her kids. Also Sean Lock and Tommy Walsh were within spitting distance and in the other direction Graham Norton and Sir Ian McKellan

halfbakedkate · 16/01/2020 18:28

@MrsToothyBitch you are definitely from where I grew up and still live fairly near to! I had forgotten about the lady who wore the little girl clothes.
She was amazing.
Sadly, I googled 'Jesus' last night and he passed away a while ago. The article I read acknowledged what a local legend he was.

cheesenpickles · 16/01/2020 18:30

@Itsonlymeeee you must live near me as Val is often on the roster of local food festivals etc but Nicolas Cage I didn't not know about!

Doubletrouble99 · 16/01/2020 19:12

Ronnie Corbett had a holiday home in the village I lived in and I served him most days in my shop when he was their. Garry Lineker walked past once but didn't come in but Lenny Henry and Dawn French did.

GrannyRoberts · 16/01/2020 19:23

I don't live there anymore but I used to live in a town in E.Sussex where there were a few local characters. Most notably "sorry to bother you" aka "naughty boy" a smartly dressed guy who used to dance round the town singing about how naughty he was then approach people to apologise for bothering them. Very sad really, I think about him quite often and wonder what his story was. Also the beatbox guy who used to burst into the local wetherspoons, perfirm a beatbox routine, then leave. I wonder if they are still around.

GrannyRoberts · 16/01/2020 19:30

Actually it was Kent!

Twuntsrule · 16/01/2020 19:33

I may have the saddest story to relate...though he's 15 years older than me, the evil orange thing in the Oval Office grew up just down the road. His mother lived there until she passed, and my mother and I went to the same hairstylist that she patronized. He said she was lovely, and the only person he would ever make house calls for. Evil orange, naturally, was the worst behaved of his siblings, and would tear ass around the neighborhood in his expensive cars when he was a teen and not faking it at military school. Fortunately, he never lived in the 'hood after university, and we were happy to be rid of him. We in NYC have known what a loathsome creature he is for at least 40 years!

BiBiBirdie · 16/01/2020 20:58

Susanne from Pop Idol's son was in DDs class at primary school. She was lovely, you know when you meet someone and know their face and can't place them? When us mum's went out for an end of term piss up meal, one of the others brought up her pop idol past. She's on the BBC now.

FreezerBird · 16/01/2020 23:27

I'm surprised this thread got to 18 pages before Toy Mic Trev came up - there was stuff in the papers about him when he disappeared; they tracked him down and he did a repeat performance in Queen Street (Cardiff) for his 80th birthday. People loved it apparently. He died a few months later.

Where i used to live there was a woman known locally as Mad Evans who was imprisoned at the age of 81 and some.time later given as ASBO which banned her from her own home and the surrounding streets because of her terrible behaviour to her neighbours. She's since died. Her daughter worked in a shop in town and I always felt very sorry for her. I believe she could be as bad as her mother but having lived with her for so long can't have been easy.

Itsonlymeeee · 17/01/2020 14:33

@cheesenpickles Val lives in my town (often see her in the shopping precinct) Nicolas Cage bought a house near by in a small village near Glastonbury called Baltonsborough (where dd2 & fil both live) He is often seen in Glastonbury High Street & was pictured in a Wells pub on nye 😊

chockaholic72 · 17/01/2020 15:03

@EdersonsSmileyTattoo - I do know those. Pie and Chips was an urban legend even when I started secondary school. Frank the Tramp once shouted that I had legs like a Queen Anne table at me outside Tommy's. Is he still around? I've moved up the road so don't go in the town centre.

Bruce Springsteen outside the cinema in the next town along - wearing a Walkman and screeching along to Born in the USA while we all queued up outside.

My favourite these days is a rasta who cycles up and down Oxford Road with a huge boom box on his bike. You can hear him for a good two minutes before he actually passes you.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 17/01/2020 15:38

@chockaholic72 I just KNEW there would be someone on here who’d get it! Grin

I think Frank died a few years back now, rumour had it that his Mum left him ££££’s when she passed away and he was loaded, how true that is I don’t know.

I’ve seen the Rasta too he’s ace!

There is of course the Market Street Mincer too, bright orange foundation and ridiculously tight trousers, just used to mince up and down all day!!

Adoptthisdogornot · 17/01/2020 16:15

There's a very old man who rides his enormous shire horse into our local market town every Saturday morning and just sits there all morning in the pedestrianised bit while children come up and say hello. Its bizarre but quite lovely in a way. Reminds me of Joe Grundy, may he rest in peace.

weaselwords · 17/01/2020 22:15

Now that is cool 😎

MrsToothyBitch · 18/01/2020 08:17

@halfbakedkate yes, Jesus was lovely! Everyone was incredibly sad when he died. We used to call the older lady "The Bridesmaid", never knew anything about her but I think the outfits were home made?

angelfacecuti75 · 19/01/2020 00:32

I know Jo Pascale lived in Kent (comedian with the squeaky voice) as his son went to my school.

theluckiest · 19/01/2020 01:09

We used to have the Monkey Man.

Lovely feller who dressed up in a Sargeant Pepper-style uniform and pushed a toy monkey around in a pushchair while jaunty music played from a hi-fi balanced on top.

Sadly, he then moved to Llandudno with his equally eccentric girlfriend.

Still, we also have Joe Lycett who lives nearby. Smile

DoraleeRhodes · 19/01/2020 03:23

There’s Marigold and The Puppet Man both mentioned already.

Also Flowerpot Man who goes for a jog early every morning in just trainers, short shorts, oversized sunglasses and with a flowerpot on his head. Was even out in the snow during The Beast From The East a few years back.

MisfitNinja · 11/02/2020 09:29

We have a couple of members of 911. Bumped into them in Costa a couple of years back.

A few ex-Eastenders actors live fairly local. I met Sid Owen in the Pet Shop when I was about 12.

Met Ashley Young (Footballer) at our local festival two years back.

There’s also a few local characters. Including ‘Raving Richard’ who is an elderly man, mainly seen wearing woman’s clothes and dancing the night away in the local “night club” during the day he’s often seen pulling a massive trolly full of fishing gear.

Twinklebinkletoes · 11/02/2020 09:39

F1 driver Derrick Warwick lives where my dad does. He’s even built his own F1 museum celebrating his F1 career (despite never actually ever winning a race!) for the locals to come and ogle at.

In terms of local celebs, there is a man on a mobility scooter who had a little dog which rides on the scooter, and a parrot! He takes the parrot out on a lead (basically it’s a dog lead and he clips the clippy bit around the parrots leg so it can’t fly off). He takes it outside nightclubs and obviously all the drunk people want a picture with the parrot but it kept biting people so the Police had to intervene and tell the man to go home! I feel sorry for the poor parrot.

Trooperslaneagain · 11/02/2020 09:40

See this guy in town all the time

www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/glasgow-news/silent-raver-never-stop-dancing-11925659

Carol Smillie (sp?) walks her dogs in the park next to me.

Saw Michelle Mc Manus come out of the gym once which I was walking past, not going into

One of my friends is a journalist on the telly.

There's a wee man who walks a three legged sheepdog too.

I know someone who had nocturnal relations with an NI striker. And someone who did the same with a 'national treasure' football pundit. Boke.

Oh and I've met Razor Ruddock. He was a hoot!

MisfitNinja · 11/02/2020 09:41

Oh... and the dude who played Gary in Eastenders loves fairly local.

Seen him on more than one occasion during a night out. Once the bouncers wouldn’t let him back into the bar as he was clearly staggering and wearing sun glasses. He removed the sunglasses and actually went “but I’m Gary from Eastenders!” 🙄

Kirstymonkey3 · 11/02/2020 09:43

We have the puppet man - an elderly man who plays music from a stereo and makes hand puppets dance!

mrsBtheparker · 11/02/2020 13:03

This thread reminds me of a very old song 'I danced with a man, who danced with a girl, who danced with the Prince of Wales'.

notanotherjigsawpiece · 11/02/2020 13:07

There is a busker in my city who stands outside a shopping centre every day playing a “violumpet” - he has literally been on sting the same tune for about 30 years.

There used to be a small shop in the city centre selling hippy/witch/crystal type stuff but also bottles of poppers. The owner was notorious for chasing customers out of his shop, I still see FB memes about him to this day!
