Do you have any where you live, or any local urban legends?

The closest town to myself there was a man who drove round on a mobility scooter with 4 or 5 real life owls sat with him... He would stop and let people have pics with him and all sorts.

It wasn't done as a one off or charity, he just liked to takes his owls out I guess.

Oh, yes! I have thought of one that definetely WILL out me but who cares... We have a Big Issue seller who loves to sing as you walk past. He was in our local rag because he became engaged to a lady who met him whilst he was selling- quite a moving story as she herself was very poor and it was just before Christmas. He asked her to buy a BI and she burst into tears and explained she was worrying about how to cope with Christmas as she had no electricity and could not top up her meter! Eventually they married and many people came to the wedding service. He always makes me smile when I see him singing a little tune. So much hardship yet he always so cheerful!

apols if anyone has beat me to this but where I live we have 'birdman' local guy who loves a few beers and a song, almost everyone knows who he is and talks to him, my own DS once walked home with him singing along together {sorry any locals on route} he was actually drafted in to switch on the city centre xmas lights a couple of years ago Grin seems a happy chap who causes no issues and it is lovely how everyone in the pubs says hello and just accepts him.

Efrogwraig · 15/01/2020 19:24

In Sheffield we have John, the man with a pram. He is now 80 years old, wears a green curly perm wig & walks around the city pushing a pram raising money for Macmillan Cancer research. He has raised about £750,000 since 1991. Amazing manwww.thestar.co.uk/news/people/city-honours-our-pram-man-41778

Kenny Baker (R2D2) used to live very near me, often used to see him when out and about.

champagneandfromage50 · 15/01/2020 19:25

Jo Brand- her DC went to the local school and she regularly compered at the school quiz- although she did give me the finger once when I beeped her at the traffic lights Grin

Kate Thornton- friend of a friend- love her
Kate Ford- DS goes to my DS school and she is lovely
Micky Flanagan- gets his hair done at my mates salon and is cool
James Nesbitt lives round the corner- rumour has it that he gave some money to the local school for a new kitchen and on opening eve he was found snorting coke off it
Ian Glenn ( games of thrones is nearby)

There is a bohemian private school near me where lots of celebs children go, we're talking A-listers. So Noel Gallagher, Kate Winslet, Mark Owen, Johnny Depp. Also Harry Hill. Have seen Mark Owen in Waitrose with his daughter.

Also Hugh Bonneville, Alan Titchmarsh and John Bishop. Have seen them a couple of times over the years.

PortiaCastis · 15/01/2020 19:31

We have Jim with the Hat's Son who is a bit of a character and takes it upon himself to go around with a bucket of water washing road signs.
Now his Dad Jim with the Hat was a best friend of my Gran they would sit outside the pub putting the world to rights and passing the time of day with the tourists but Jim was never seen without his hat come rain or shine winter or summer he was also an eccentric but great çharacter
Also David Baddiel lives near me.

BBOA · 15/01/2020 19:35

There's a guy in a nearby town.. Mr Christmas.. Who celebrates Christmas every day!! Real celebrity wise there's the odd Rugby Bath or England player and Roger Cooke. (He either nearly runs you off the road or can be seen moaning to poor shop assistants) Showing my age knowing him 😲

Esspee · 15/01/2020 19:36

I worked in Buchanan Street in Glasgow for a few months and used to rush out to take photos of the weird and wonderful people who passed by. The guy with a full sized cross on his back (yes, a heavy wooden cross big enough to be crucified on) stands out in my memories. Apparently he was a well known character.

Inliverpool1 · 15/01/2020 19:37

Tom Baker, Judy Dench, they are 10 a penny by where I used to live.
Nowadays it’s John Barnes, Robbie Fowler on a good day in Costa but that’s it

Animum2 · 15/01/2020 19:40

Dave Courtney self styled gangster lives 3 roads away, that's about it oh and Jim Davidson's 1st wife lives nearby

MotherHeggy · 15/01/2020 19:41

Terry the Union Jack suit man. He's a huge fan of the royal family and is often seen on tv at their events.

notbloodylikely · 15/01/2020 19:42

Amongst our local celebs were/are:
The bearded lady - full beard. Actually might not be a lady now that I come to think of it. Still, an impressive beard/dress combo.

An woman who walked around town with a stuffed parrot attached to a bag.

The bus driver (I think, might be trains) who looks like Paul Weller (proper Mod).

Quite few actual celebrities are local too but that's nothing compared to all these people with animals and Z listers.

maslinpan · 15/01/2020 19:42

We have a micro-celeb in our village, known for his uniform of wool jacket, knickerbockers, crocs and brightly coloured socks, and a different coloured beret every day of the week. His kids are too little to be horrified by this ensemble, but he cheers me up as he slogs past with the Dutch bike.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/01/2020 19:43

Tori Amos and John Nettles.
(Sounds like a bad game of consequences)

Tartyflette · 15/01/2020 19:48

Emma Cambridge is great for eccentrics and good buskers.
I remember a tall, youngish chap with long flowing red locks who wore a kilt and played the bagpipes. Haven't seen him for a while though .
I've also seen Rory McGrath totally pissed and making an arse of himself on Sidney Street.

Purplealienpuke · 15/01/2020 19:50

In one of my first jobs I had to serve Bobby Davro regularly. Hes a prick. Used to see him and his wife swanning around the local shopping centre aswell, her in a full length fur coat in the middle of summer 🙄
This lovely man was a legend in Edinburgh (my hometown now) RIP 💜
