DP going away

My DP (together a year, we don't live together) just called and told me he's being considered to work abroad for 6 weeks over the summer, it would be over my birthday and straight after he finishes his very intense uni course. He told me that he intends to take it if he's offered.

I'm upset because I'm barely going to see him in the weeks leading up to it due to deadlines, and we'd discussed going away for my birthday which now obviously won't happen. I'm also annoyed that he told me he intends to take it, and didn't actually ask how I felt about it.

Am I being completely selfish here?

even if he could do other things, he wants to go.

Crumbs, even in a LTR I'd have a fit if someone wanted to moan about me doing something like this.

To be fair, I wouldn’t consult a boyfriend of a year about going overseas for six weeks. I would tell them of course, but would think about hem having a say.

You don’t have children together, you don’t live together and it’s only six weeks.

actually OP this reminds me of something that happened when I became a godparent the first time

one of the other godparents - I didn't know her till the christening! - was also 25, her husband had a very good job and she spent two years moaning at me about how he was home late every night.

I couldn't believe that she couldn't find anything better to do with her time. Don't be that woman. I don't keep in touch with her any more, she clearly didn't want to do anything except hang about waiting for her hubby.

YABU, I despair of the importance of grown women’s birthdays on MN.

I thought from the OP you were going to be 18

Where is he going, why don’t you join him for your birthday?

AutumnRose1 · 12/01/2020 19:26

As I've said before, I love my birthday and I'm 43 Grin
I don't expect anyone to make special arrangements though!

but to me, that's not the point. It's grumbling about him going full stop.
