...Scene One?

I think we probably do need a third thread.

Meghan has never wanted privacy. When she had her lifestyle blog she posted pictures of herself lying in bed and gushed about every aspect of her life. Everything is for sale in her world. Harry will be a prop for product placement.

Is it reasonable for a couple with a combined wealth of £34m to use their Royal status for personal financial gain, whilst expecting taxpayers to fund their lifestyle aa they feather their nest at the expense of doing the job those public funds were in lieu of?

Of course it is not! I believe that using personal connections for financial gain is called corruption.

In terms of Foundation a la Clinton/Obama/Clooney/Gates - they can try, but it seems awfully arrogant on the surface. The Clintons and Obamas have the background of both having one member be the most powerful person in the world for 8 years, having direct knowledge of world politics and personal relationships across the world at high levels. They actually have opionions and insights which people want to hear. The Gates have the history of building and running a company which was at one point the most valuable in the world and, again, the personal relationships and insights coming from that. The Clooney have one member who is a top international rights lawyer with a stellar academic background and credentials and then George Clooney with had many personal connections built over time. George alone could not have started this foundation without his wife's credentials.

What exactly have the Sussex achieved in life on that par which they think gives them the credentials to build a competing foundation? Harry has the sparkle of royalty and what he has done in the past with it (Invictus, army) - what exactly does Meghan have to offer on the same level as the other foundations starters?

Mominatrix · 13/01/2020 06:07

On a more interesting note, the coverage in the US outlets I follow (New York Times, The Atlantic) are much more supportive of the Sussexs with the Atlantic having an article showing how their decision demonstrates a much more modern, equal marriage than the other marriages in the RF. Harry and Meghan are supposedly modern and egalitarian in having a marriage where the needs of Meghan are taken as seriously and acted on by both partners. The NYT has had several Op/Eds by people saying that the UK is a deeply racist country and that the breakdown of the relationship of the public and the Sussexs is due to this.

OVienna · 13/01/2020 06:22

The coverage in the US is a disgrace. (I am originally from the US.)

Exactly this ^

Harry & Meghan only have their high level access to world leaders / governments / A listers because they are Representatives of the British Royal Family

Would Oprah and The Clooneys have attended the wedding of the actress Meghan Markle if she had been marrying her former boyfriend the Canadian chef; Cory Vitello.

Not one member of her family invited to her wedding.
Utterly wierd. Was there no one from her mother’s side she could have invited?

I definitely think she will aim for politics. Why not. Ronald a Reagan was a former actor
I reckon she will start off trying for gouverner of California.
She needs Harry to add the stardust, and Archie is the bait which keeps him on side.
Sadly Harry will not find happiness following Meghan round the world.
He was happiest with his humanitarian projects in Africa.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she promised to move to Africa with him; to get him on board with the idea of quitting the UK. Once he had agreed to that; she would have flipped it to her ultimate aim; North America.

From the moment of the baby shower in New York; the movie star shades and paparazzi; it was obvious Meghan wanted to go back.

OrangeLindt · 13/01/2020 06:30

@LotteLupin oh I love Orange Lindt more than Chocolate Orange twirls!

OVienna · 13/01/2020 06:37

The threat to give a "no holds barred" interview if they don't get what they want is disgraceful too. Who do these people seriously think they are?

The80sweregreat · 13/01/2020 06:50

Threatening the Queen to get what you want is a bit low really. I know Harry's mum did her interview in 1996 without telling anyone but she was already divorced by then and most people already knew all about the worst things by then.
I did read that Meghan won't be involved in all the meetings today ; she won't like that but bailing out and not facing the music face to face is bound to keep you on the back foot.
They will sort something out. The Royals are a formidable force and shouldn't be underestimated but I wouldn't be shocked if William will be prepared to throw him under a bus .. he looks the ruthless type. Especially as Meghan won't be around to support her husband!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 13/01/2020 07:01

I think they’d all happily throw Meghan under the bus; but they will do their best to make sure that a Harry can come back; should he ever want to.

SympatheticSwan · 13/01/2020 07:04

The Clooney have one member who is a top international rights lawyer with a stellar academic background
I don't think this is true, strictly speaking. She was quite junior. Appearing in prominent cases, yes, but alongside a team and under instruction of more experienced barristers.
And she is a human rights lawyer, not a human rights advocate. Some people she defended you would not shake hands with - but they had money for a top London team. Unless many of their compatriots / subjects, who often were kind of real victims of the plaintiff.

LotteLupin · 13/01/2020 07:07

CurlyWurly yes I thought just the same - she knew Africa was his dream, and she seemingly entertained that idea (maybe even suggested it) to bring the notion of leaving the UK into play.

I was mildly astonished at the time at the thought of her in a safari shirt with her sleeves rolled up feeding lion cubs from a bottle and sweeping old minefields and helping villagers dig a water hole. ... I thought gosh I must have got her wrong! She must really love Harry and really want to change her shallow, sassy self-promoting Hollywood life for being a global ambassador for good! She must have understood deeply the real, serious opportunity of being a British Royal and what that can mean in terms of helping others. ....

But lo and behold ... that got flipped into heading for LA and doing a Disney voiceover ... (with a smug little twist of political 'integrity' that only when the dreadful (racist, sexist) (orange) Trump is gone). ...

Orange Lindt. Curlywurly (another fave!! I can remember the taste now when one I got from Father Christmas when I was about 10!) ... what is this?! I'm going to have to change my name to FrysMintChocolateCream 😛* *

I've been watching Suits as research. Omg. Talk about pleased with herself. And Suits has a belief-base which seems to match hers exactly. I think she's been influenced by it. Not joking.

LotteLupin · 13/01/2020 07:11

Sorry to say she just reminds me of a female sociopath I was unfortunate enough to come across. She also had any man pussy-whipped and did that wide-eyed innocence thing. Typical behaviour. Totally similar pattern.

GlitchStitch · 13/01/2020 07:17

The nerve of US publications calling the UK a deeply racist society. The race issues in the US are appalling. Eye rolling at a pampered and privileged woman having a moan is hardly in the same league.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 13/01/2020 07:21

It’s her behaviour people are questioning not her race. I believe she’s manipulative but I thought that at the time they married. She drew him in & he - who no doubt was desperate to be loved fell for it. I’ve no evidence just my opinion.

MissEliza · 13/01/2020 07:21

I read MM will join the meetings via phone.

MissEliza · 13/01/2020 07:30

ROFL at Americans saying we have a deeply racist society. I've lived in the US. It was a real eye opener.

OVienna · 13/01/2020 07:52

Glitchstich I agree completely.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing from a "reporter" from "Entertainment Tonight" speaking last night about them being "driven out" of the UK - this is seriously fictitious and Unbelievable other real media outlets have fallen for this bumpf. It's like they've passed around the stupid juice. I find the way they've turned this into an opportunity to bash Britain really scary. MM was a virtually unknown US actress living in Canada when she married Prince Harry. It's been three years. She was not some much loved public figure there - it's also bizarre from that standpoint. They are conflating her with Princess Diana, it's as if that situation has risen from the flames.

Latest in the Times this am is it is MM who is determined to go. The thing is, she may feel empowered at the moment and is probably getting egged on but if she ever left him (especially for someone else) it would all come crashing down. It's Harry that people have the sympathy for.

OVienna · 13/01/2020 07:59

I'm getting crosser and crosser. So we have senior government figures tied up in knots apparently because WILLIAM wasn't friendly enough to Meghan. I wonder what would have been "friendly enough"???? In their books. This is a farce.

If I see one more article on how racist Britain is compared to the US I am actually going to use my postal vote to vote for Trump in protest. Give them another four years of him.

(NB: no, I won't do that. But I did enjoy contemplating it.)

anonacfr · 13/01/2020 08:00

For bonkers coverage of the whole mess may I recommend Celebitchy?
An american news/gossip website.

It's rather amusing.

DuchessofWoke · 13/01/2020 08:02

I’ve lived in Washington DC. I was stunned at the racial segregation. White people live in one part of town, black in another and never the twain shall meet.

It’s gobsmacking and lazy journalism if this is really the angle that’s being reported over there.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 13/01/2020 08:02

The nerve of US publications calling the UK a deeply racist society. The race issues in the US are appalling

Indeed. Well they did have a black president I suppose so probably like to point to that as evidence of their good societal race relations. However it kind of falls down given that they voted in Mexico Wall Building Donald Trump the moment Obama's terms were finished and look set to do so again for a second term.

DeeZastris · 13/01/2020 08:05

I loved in America for a year (Maryland) and the level of open racism is shocking.

PaprikaPringle · 13/01/2020 08:05

The NYT has had several Op/Eds by people saying that the UK is a deeply racist country

Oh the irony of the USA accusing any other country of being racist!

jollybird · 13/01/2020 08:08

Great news.
I'm glad they may be moving to North America and may not be coming back.

Good for them. I wish them every happiness.

Now the daily fail and like minded people will have to find something else to froth and foam about. Smile
