Following on from the previous thread, someone asked for another to be created.

Here it is.

Bovaryx I agree with you that using South Africa as a backdrop to declare their suffering was inept.

The point I was making is somewhat different. I am referring to the fact that people seem to think that H and M lecture or preach. I don't think there is evidence of this. I think this idea ties in well with the idea that any mention of feminism or climate change is shrill or preachy. It's exactly what happened with the suffragettes. People talked about them as nutty harridans. Common sense, right?

Could you please define “woke agenda”?

The requirement for people to restrict the way in which people communicate about matters pertaining to race, gender or other “identities”, into a set of tight parameters, castigating anyone who doesn’t adhere strictly to this orthodoxy, and extrapolating what they say in the most extreme way, imputing malign and sinister motives.

GlitchStitch · 11/01/2020 18:07

I think it's preachy to remind others about their carbon footprint just before using 4 private jets in 11 days (shrug). And I've never used the word shrill.

jollybird · 11/01/2020 18:10

There it is again Glitch.

The nitpicking.

The other members of the family have used private planes and talked about climate change, etc.

But of course you are entitled to your opinion.

Oakenbeach · 11/01/2020 18:11

The out of Compton, was lazy journalism for which the Mail is dreadful. I think though they were trying to emphasise/exaggerate the difference is their backgrounds rather than the colour of her skin though.

Exactly. It’s the knee-jerk cries of “racism” that frustrates me.

Andylion · 11/01/2020 18:11

The out of Compton, was lazy journalism for which the Mail is dreadful

Was Meghan actually born in Compton? If not, I think that is racism, not laziness.

jollybird · 11/01/2020 18:12

Knee jerk?
It's become really trendy to deny racism these days.

jollybird · 11/01/2020 18:13

Perhaps it's also a woke phenomenon...

Alsohuman · 11/01/2020 18:13

This isn’t nitpicking. It’s calling out hypocrisy. How much are the Sussexes paying you @jollybird?

BovaryX · 11/01/2020 18:13

hambledon
I think it's more than inept when you are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to use a visit to South African townships to tremulously lament your struggles to 'thrive not survive' It's indicative of astonishing narcissism and a total absence of effective briefing. As for the suffragettes? We live in an era where they would be demonized and hounded for a belief in sex based rights. Another curious example of the illiberal 'liberal' orthodoxy which dominates much public discourse

jollybird · 11/01/2020 18:14

Trillions!!GrinGrin

jollybird · 11/01/2020 18:15

But seriously

It's a debate!!
Is this the standard response when you are losing? Smile

Parker231 · 11/01/2020 18:16

Alot of hate about someone you have never met or spoken to with evidence taken from reading the Daily Mail! How can you dislike someone so much without any reason ?

AutumnRose1 · 11/01/2020 18:19

"They didn't want to announce it but The Sun were about the break the story."

sorry, not keeping up with who said what. But this immediately reminds of the Spice Girls and their pregnancies, one actually said they were still thinking what to do and the paper told them "well you better make up your mind because we are printing it now."

Didn't Gordon Brown have to disclose personal information about his child in a similar way?

it's impossible to know what's true at the moment, but if they want to attack that kind of jounrnalism, all power to them.

but if it's about having branded Sussex Royal plates - no. But I am increasingly baffled as to why that rumour is doing the rounds anyway.

Moknicker · 11/01/2020 18:21

This sums up the racism that MM has faced quite well. The one where Archie was compared to a chimpanzee was sickening. Interesting there was no MN thread on that one.

www.inc.com/minda-zetlin/prince-harry-meghan-markle-leaving-uk-royal-family-racism-tabloids.html

Some edited quotes below:

"Then there was the sense that, no matter what she did, Markle could never do anything right. At least according to some critics in the press, who earnestly insisted that it wasn't her race they objected to, it was some other thing that she'd done wrong. Like when she was roundly criticized for guest-editing an issue of Vogue UK. Dan Wootton, executive editor of The Sun went on TV to say, outrage in his voice, that "Royals don't guest-edit magazines!" Except that they have a long tradition of doing just that. Prince Charles guest-edited Country Life twice. Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, was praised for guest-editing the Huffington Post and she also posed for the cover of the UK Vogue.

Some Britons (and especially the same tabloids that have been attacking Markle all along) have expressed outrage that the couple say they will perform fewer royal duties..But the couple, social influencers with millions of followers, have been revenue generators too. By one estimate, the royal wedding (which the royal family paid for) brought about a billion pounds to the British economy."

GlitchStitch · 11/01/2020 18:21

Even if the Sun were going to break the news, what was to stop them issuing a statement saying they were in discussions about a new direction? Nobody forced them to launch their website telling everyone apparently including the Queen the way things were going to be.

LovePoppy · 11/01/2020 18:22

In America racism is blatant. Here it's more under the cover of civility... but it can't be denied.

Except @jollybird It is. Loudly. While accusing anyone who sees it as “super woke”, as though trying to do better is a bad thing!
“Stick to the status quo” indeed.

Oakenbeach · 11/01/2020 18:23

It's become really trendy to deny racism these days

It’s at least as trendy to cry “racism” when someone levels any criticism of someone of colour, regardless of whether the criticism has anything to do with their colour. P

Rinoachicken · 11/01/2020 18:23

There is a reason that William made Kate wait so long before making it official. There is a reason that Harry’s previous girlfriends have backed away, Chelsey in particular.

IMO they married far far too quickly. IF Meghan TRULY had no idea about the British RF, if she had no idea about what the life is like, then it was Harry’s job to make sure she understood fully, BEFORE popping the question.

It has been widely reported that William had reservations and cautioned his brother not to rush things. With good reason. For most of their relationship they were not in the spotlight, most people didn’t even know they were dating until maybe 6months before they got engaged. That is not anywhere near enough time for her to experience first hand what it would be like to be next to Harry in the spotlight on a long term basis IN BRITAIN.

GlitchStitch · 11/01/2020 18:23

The one where Archie was compared to a chimpanzee was sickening. Interesting there was no MN thread on that one.

There was a 1000 post thread on the Danny Baker racism.

Ilovepinot · 11/01/2020 18:25

My Mum in Australia, said there are rumours in the papers there that they are splitting up.

LovePoppy · 11/01/2020 18:26

@Oakenbeach, your definition of “woke agenda” sounds pretty darn similar to people criticizing Those of us who do see the blatant racism.

I’m not telling you that you can’t ignore it, but you certainly like telling people they are over imagining it.

Rinoachicken · 11/01/2020 18:27

Also, again it’s only my opinion, but after they’d married, I would have thought the more pragmatic and sensible course would have been to keep your head down for the first couple of years, start to build relationships with your new family, new friends in your new country. And then, once you are settled, once the country knows you a little better, you know the country a little better (or at all) then you can start to make some changes if necessary.

PortiaCastis · 11/01/2020 18:28

It's hilarious that all the nasty kerb licking stuff I've read has no substance except my old friend "a source" and his bestie "it is thought" Statement from the Queen ...nope but everyone knows what she said, words from William ...nope but everyone knows how he feels, media frenzy....yep let's put words out there from "a source" yep!
Truth....nope never
